Thought I’d start an early thread on this. Friday looks very blowy here in Wales. We currently have a yellow warning, waiting to see if it’s upgraded.

@Norniron24advice
Half of social media needs to be more like your mum, the amount of tiktok's of screaming lunatics making videos of a wheely bin flying by and screaming like the world has ended.

SnoopysHoose · 24/01/2025 19:39

I'm East coast Scotland, trees down everywhere, roofs off houses and garages.
Google Denny co-op, virtually demolished.

IAmADescendantOfSweepTheSqueakyLegend · 24/01/2025 19:41

So what's your damage, then? Our lovely fence is totally fucked - down in the majority of places. The house at the end of our road has lost a nice tree and has cones all over the place fencing off the debris.

No power for eight hours.

How to boil water with tealights. At least we could drink tea and boil taties. 🤣

Sending much love to you. You've had a right old time of it in the past couple of years with weather related issues.

peachgreen · 24/01/2025 19:44

We survived! (NI coastal red zone.) DP’s parents lost power, friends lost the roof of their shed, and a tree came down in our road (but mercifully missed the houses and cars!). It was pretty bonkers but not as bad (for us) as Darragh. Hope everyone is okay.

peachgreen · 24/01/2025 19:45

Oh and the roof blew off our local sports centre! DD distraught that gymnastics is cancelled tomorrow. Thankfully everyone okay!

Have you seen that they’ve said they’re hoping to reopen gym and swim on Monday? We’ll see.

From what I have seen online, and from friends, it seems like Holywood got it worse than Bangor, although as with Darragh - our friends in Bangor who are further inland seem to have been worse affected than those of us right by the sea.

Feck off. Surely they won't be open on Monday?! DD will be devastated, she thinks she's getting months off swimming lessons 🤣

Seem to be over the worst of it in Glasgow. I've never heard wind like it and for such a prolonged time, constant from 5am-6pm. Trees down, buildings damaged, flying roof tiles. Looking forward to hopefully sleeping early tonight. Ventured out just now and felt very strangely like lockdown, very bizarre feeling indeed

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/01/2025 20:29

Final total here seems to be 1 slightly wobbly fence panel (post still sound so an easy fix), pane blow out of the greenhouse, and virtually all the felt stripped from the shed roof.

Shed and greenhouse were planned for replacement this year anyway, so we.got off lightly. Better than the neighbours- 1 side's lost a drainpipe, and the other several fence panels and chunk of roof tiles.

Norniron24advice · 24/01/2025 20:33

Our local bathroom shop uses a massive stuffed duck for promo. its about 12 foot high. our community has a love hate relationship with it. poor bugger fell victim to the storm and burst last night. the inner filling of small white polystyrene balls is all across the area. We found them in our building - we are streets away!

These storms always convince me that hedges are better than fences (and panel fences are utterly rubbish at resisting wind). Better for birds and wildlife too. My parents caved in to a neighbour who wanted to replace the nice privet hedge with a fence (I think he was just a lazy bastard who couldn't be bothered trimming it) and always regretted it; the damn thing blew down every winter.

Cece92 · 24/01/2025 20:37

I gained half of someone's shed and my Whirly gig is done in. Usually debris from bins. Neighbour has gained a trampoline I out bricks on mine. Power is restored and heating on thank god as it was getting cold. X

I agree. We have hedges both sides at the front, and one side and thr endnof thr back - they threashed about a bit and lost a few leaves, but are otherwise fine.

I'm near the coast and my car and conservatory are absolutely covered in salt. I took my car for a main service last week so assumed the screenwash had been topped up. Nope. Had to pull over and pour a bottle of water over the windscreen. I'm hoping the jets aren't blocked again as I only had them replaced last year. Wasn't going to fanny about opening the bonnet today to check today, but will do tomorrow.

I’d give it a wash tomorrow too as salt is corrosive

Justmuddlingalong · 24/01/2025 20:52

I've ordered straps which "allegedly" will keep the lids of my wheelie bins closed in future windy weather.
I'm not convinced they will be as effective as I'm hoping, but after chasing the recycling round the garden today, I'll try anything.

millfree · 24/01/2025 20:52

One the west coast of Scotland in the red zone, very windy indeed today. A few trees down, loads of fences and sheds down or partially down, a neighbours care has a tree on top of it, a few houses that were broadside against the wind have significant roof damage, one house lost its fascia and it was flying about the street and would have been quite dangerous if it had hit anyone. Quite a few bins over and rubbish everywhere. Not ventured any further afield, I think some parts locally had it much worse though.

Cece92 · 24/01/2025 21:05

Daughters horse riding is apparently back in tomorrow xx

BadTitan · 24/01/2025 21:25

A huge tree fell on our roof about 5am. More bits coming down over the next few hours. Then another one mid morning which just missed the kitchen window. And two uprooted at the back.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/01/2025 21:33

Eek! Nobody hurt, I hope.

I think a man died in Irvine in Scotland sadly.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 24/01/2025 21:37

I meant in BadTitan's tree incident. I'm aware of at least a couple of deaths nationally.

BadTitan · 24/01/2025 21:46

No, we've been very lucky. No injuries, and not actually much damage, once the tree surgeon removed the one on the roof. It just smashed up the corner of the roof and some tiles.

Sunnyside4 · 24/01/2025 21:56

BadTitan you must have felt awful earlier on. Have your insurance been much help? Any idea when roof can be repaired?

I saw your photo on the other thread - glad you're all ok.
