I'm in the midlands with an amber warning ⚠️. Is anything going to happen?

Like pp it is miserable here. (NE Scotland) The pavements are inches thick with ice, black ice on the roads, and feels like -8 right now. I slipped and skated into work, and our manager told us to wfh in the afternoon. I dug out some ancient Ugg boots to wear as slippers tonight because it’s so cold. Community FB page says all the grit bins are empty.

Our poor cat is so fed up because he really really really wants to go out on important cat business, but also really really really hates being cold and wet.

I haven't moved cars since Saturday either. The last time it snowed heavily I moved my car to a main road about 400 yards away which gets gritted. I didn't do that on Friday so am marooned due to the compacted ice and snow as well.

I tiptoed like a ballerina to work yesterday, three miles of tiptoeing ... gave me backache.

It is -7 here this morning, feels like -10, tedious.

Obviously the side roads don't get gritted, but the main roads are being gritted more than once a day here.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses - we have a phrase here 'NCW' - not cat weather. Any moaning at the back door is met with 'NCW Kitty, NCW'.

1 degree here in Warrington, apparently! Freezing cold, thick ice everywhere, roads treacherous, schools closed!

socks1107 · 08/01/2025 13:08

We are due snow later today in Kent. Not sure they've decided on details yet so watching the window. I sort of want it and sort of don't!

troppibambini6 · 08/01/2025 13:38

I just want it to all bugger off now. I love powdery white snow for about an hour.

South Manchester and it's its frozen solid, ice everywhere roads and pavements are treacherous.
No more forecast just need to warm up a bit and thaw.

Plump82 · 08/01/2025 13:43

We went for a walk last night and the roads and pavements are treacherous. The ice just seems to be getting thicker and thicker and more patches of black ice. And not one gritter to be seen and all bins empty. I don't even think they were full to start with as there's no grit on the ground at all.

APurpleSquirrel · 08/01/2025 14:16

Finally snowing here on the Somerset/Devon border. Not sure if it'll settle but very cold.

bestcatlife · 08/01/2025 15:56

Got major cabin fever so just tried to go out for a walk.. made it about 10 steps before sliding while crossing the road, took one look at the pavement up ahead and turned back. Where are the gritters?? Hope I get out at the weekend.

Same!

Just1234 · 08/01/2025 16:21

Sorry that sent long before I was ready!

Same here in Kent but now it looks like they think it won't snow!

I have a little one who is desperate to build a snowman so I would love some for him

We've got loads so I could probably box some up for you and post it, it's that cold that I guarantee it won't melt 🤣

I'm in Bradford. We had snow (16cm recorded here) on Sunday, which then subsequently froze. Then more snow yesterday afternoon which has frozen again. It's thick ice everywhere and the roads/pavements are so dangerous. My DD's school is closed and they said it's likely to be closed all week!

snoopysnoooper · 08/01/2025 16:44

According to the Met office it will feel like -9 tonight and -10 tomorrow night 😖

Ticketytutu · 08/01/2025 16:51

Snowing heavily in Kent now.

RubyTrees · 08/01/2025 17:26

It’s a winter wonderland in the Sussex High Weald.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/01/2025 17:41

We have freezing fog and lethal pavements (loads of black ice everywhere and the path in the woods was just sheet ice; thank god for grass / plants to walk on along the side, as I would never have got along the full length without coming a cropper with the dog at 7 this morning!).

We don't have snow forecast again.

We're 'only' -3° / FL -5° overnight tonight. The pavements are no doubt going to be bloody fun again for the dog walk. 😩

CharlotteCChapel · 08/01/2025 17:59

I'm in the southwest and we have heavy rain. I say heavy because it makes a weird noise when it hits the ground, like a cross between Gail and rain

VegTrug · 08/01/2025 18:01

STILL snowed in, in North Yorkshire! School's been closed all week so far

Same in Harrogate except we got about 18-24cm. Do you have school's closed too?

I tried to get my car out yesterday but neighbours had to dig it out when I got stuck in the middle of the road! 🤦🏼‍♀️😆

VegTrug · 08/01/2025 18:05

@HereForTheAnimalsVery close to that pub. It’s the highest pub in the country and gets snowed in every time it snows as they’re so high up. People flock to book a stay there when there’s snow forecasted!

snoopysnoooper · 08/01/2025 18:06

@VegTrug Yes dd school been closed all week apart from a few hours yesterday. She is ecstatic 😂

I've not attempted to drive anywhere because we have an automatic and I don't know how well it would do in the ice and snow. Going to have to brave it for a food shop soon though...

Lonelycrab · 08/01/2025 18:16

North Hampshire and it’s trying to snow but more like sleet at the moment, nothing settling. About 1 degrees above freezing currently.

Yeah mine is automatic too.
Have ordered a food shop for tomorrow so will see if it arrives……❄️ Good luck if you do venture out. If your car has the option to slip in the odd gear change manually (paddles on the gear stick or a manual mode?) then keep it in low gears if you can. Don’t over correct if you do spin at all.

Just sat here wondering about online deliveries getting through UK wide. We're right on the N Wales coast so okay, but Inland it's somewhat different, little villages and hamlets, country lanes. One car abandoned causes a massive blockage. Luckily the farmers are very helpful towing wise.

snoopysnoooper · 08/01/2025 18:43

@VegTrug thank you for the advice! We have paddles on the steering wheel for gear changes but I've never touched them. Will give it a go tomorrow Smile
