Although cold, snowy weather is still possible, we are a few weeks away from the start of meteorological spring (1st March)
So here are some thoughts from The Weather Outlook on what we might expect.

OMFG

Mum is 85 and can't remember an April like this. And no sign of genuine change.

anythinginapinch · 23/04/2024 22:08

I blame the government. Any government. For this utter shitshow

midgetastic · 24/04/2024 09:21

Well climate change may well have something to do with this - warmer planet -> wetter uk and short term possible colder uk

So blame government is probably correct

Wool that today

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/04/2024 11:03

Could do with sorting my hanging baskets and replanting them but not sure if it’s warm enough.

At least watering shouldn’t be an issue. Drowning possibly…

justasking111 · 24/04/2024 12:25

Tomato and geraniums in the conservatory, some others in the greenhouse. We have very deep eaves on our bungalow so plants in pots and troughs sheltered underneath those all winter to avoid flooding.

Despite the awful weather we've had to treat greenfly on the roses, dash out to weed and feed a lawn no-one is using yet 🙈

GloriaSmud · 24/04/2024 15:56

So we've got rid of the storms but still got showers (or heavy rain occasionally) and temperatures that are all over the place. Temperature's might improve a degree or two next week but nights are still looking a bit on the chilly side, with a chance of frost in some places.

<sigh> It makes things hard trying to start things off for the allotment but at least the ground there has dried out a bit.

I don't mean to add to the sense of gloom and moaning but I am bloody freezing! I've had to start wearing double socks again just to keep my feet warm at my desk and my winter jumpers and The Big Coat have been brought back out the wardrobes.

I was mostly living with the cold with just a few grumbles but I've just checked the BBC monthly outlook which runs until mid May and finishes with this line "Recently, the likelihood of cooler and wetter conditions returning later in the forecast has increased."

And that has pushed me over the edge! Is it ever going to be sodding warm again???!

RafaistheKingofClay · 24/04/2024 17:25

I was hoping for some time recuperating sitting outside in the sun. It’s not looking promising so far.

EmmaEmerald · 24/04/2024 19:12

Is anyone finding any forecasts that are reasonably accurate on the day? Any recs? I used to work with a chap who relied on an hourly forecast to decide his time of leaving the office by bike (I'm not in touch with him sadly).

I find it infuriating when I take a lunch break and it starts raining more as soon as I head out for a walk.

I run my whole life by weather as I'm usually travelling on foot.

I do hate snow and I distinctly remember the horrible snow dumps a few years back - the accuracy, by the hour, on sites like Accuweather and XCweather was very impressive, especially if you had to get home before it started to avoid being stuck on the Tube.

Now it seems they don't even get a day forecast correct.

Mum was asking me if they still use satellites - I don't know what they use, maybe satellites are outdated now and all the wrong predictions are coming from a bonkers algorithm?!

Pixiedust1234 · 25/04/2024 09:09

We've always had colder nights in April as we've never put bedding plants out until May and all pots come in overnight, so seeing frost forecast is not surprising.

But the coldness during the day... going to assume that's due to lack of sun warming up the house, coupled with damp from the constant rain. Someone needs to go "upstairs " and turn the tap off. Looking forward to this mini heatwave that keeps being mentioned although I fully expect i will moan about it being too hot. Sorry about that 😄

EmmaEmerald · 25/04/2024 17:25

@Pixiedust1234 I haven't heard anything like that for Essex...where is this magic place?!

Forecast looks like the only day of no rain is Monday for about 10 days. What's the betting that will end up raining too!

Pixiedust1234 · 25/04/2024 21:22

@EmmaEmerald just google "mini heatwave uk" and lots of hits come up from the last 24hrs.

Brits in northern England and Scotland are set for the first of the summer weather as sunshine and warmer temperatures are expected to hit next week.
In other parts of the UK, the mercury is set to hover around 18-22C between May 3 and 6.

IT'S COMING!!!! dances in excitement

nannynick · 26/04/2024 07:52

Chilly this morning, 6 degrees in Surrey.
Not that unusual though for April.
2021 was colder. www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/news-and-media/media-centre/weather-and-climate-news/2021/lowest-average-minimum-temperatures-since-1922-as-part-of-dry-april

RainbowZebraWarrior · 26/04/2024 07:57

0 degrees here on the NE coast of England this morning.

At least its bright, sunny and dry (so far) I'm about to go outside and see if there is actual frost. Fingers crossed there isn't, as the apple blossom on my trees was the best I've seen in years.

Out forecast for the next 7 days seems slightly warmer, but nowt to shout about.

GloriaSmud · 26/04/2024 08:26

According to my weather station, it was 0 here as well (Leicester) when I got up this morning (and my apple trees at the allotment are giving a good show blossom-wise as well this year!)

Once we get Sunday out of the way (wet for some), next week does look warmer but still could be the chance of showers.

Metoffice long-range forecast is looking better for the next few weeks.....

Tuesday, 30th April-Thursday,9th May
The period is likely to start with areas of organised rain and/or showers in the west, and largely dry conditions in the east although a scattering of showers developing by day. As the week progresses thes more organised areas of rain and showers are likely to slide southeast to affect southern parts of the UK, with drier weather in northern, especially northwestern UK Winds will gradually turn from southerly to easterly, with a chance of rain or even thundery showers for a time in the east and southeast. Temperatures likely to trend upwards, with the chance of a warm to very warm spell in some southern and eastern parts, before conditions probably turn gradually drier, cooler and more settled from the west towards the end of the period.

Friday, 10th-Friday, 24th May
In this period, the chances of unsettled weather are slightly less than usual in the north and about the same as usual further south. Therefore, some spells of wetter weather are likely for all, but perhaps especially southern areas with the driest conditions probably further north. Temperatures probably near average though with some cooler interludes possible. Also worth noting that average temperatures themselves rise by around 1C per week at this time of year.

EmmaEmerald · 26/04/2024 10:03

@Pixiedust1234 that's for the north.

I only look at my area but while temps are allegedly rising, deep gloom and rain remains the forecast really.

it is sunny now though, which is a shocker. Hope it's still there at lunchtime.

Taylormiffed · 26/04/2024 10:36

emma I use the met office website to time my lunchbreak. Although we also have the benefit of huge windows and a horizon view when I'm in the office so I can literally see the weather moving in.

midgetastic · 26/04/2024 12:24

@GloriaSmud

That's made my day- I can dream !

GloriaSmud · 26/04/2024 15:49

@midgetastic ~ it isn't perfect but it'll do! After the winter we've had, it's a case of taking it one week at a time....

OP posts:
GloriaSmud · 27/04/2024 11:24

Definitely looking better for next week, especially towards Friday/next weekend. <whispers> we might even hit 20 or 21C in some places (but there's a chance that this might set off some thunderstorms.)

TheWeatherOutlook's thoughts on weather for this weekend/next week.

Wet weather in places this weekend

The weather this weekend will be a very mixed bag

Beautiful sunny day, white wash flapping on the line.
Still chilly but it is the North Sea coast after all. ☀️🌬🌊

RainbowZebraWarrior · 27/04/2024 11:57

I've dithered with my washing this morning. Ive just put the washer on and It's now looking like grey clouds coming this way. I should really have done it at 8am when I first got up.

Hibernation day tomorrow by the looks of things.

MotherOfCatBoy · 27/04/2024 11:58

Raining again here (S Wales). So, so sick of it.
