While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

Temperature went down to -3.4C overnight here (Leicester) and it's just about crawled above freezing, to a balmy 1C

RainbowZebraWarrior · 01/12/2023 12:44

@Meceme that looks so pretty!

My garden just looks slightly less messy!

Snow watch.

It’s supposed to be -5 tonight. FIL just finished putting our new bathroom radiator in. So happy as ours broke nearly 2 years ago and the room is like a fridge. No snow on forecast for me in West Yorkshire. It’s turned to ice now outside.

@RainbowZebraWarrior can only see stupid thumbnails on the app but you must be near us. Epic snow here and still falling

Wow. We're in West Northumberland, not far from Bellingham, and haven't really got much. Normally we're pretty badly hit so it makes a change.

Does anyone know what the roads in the Scottish borders are like? We're supposed to be going to Scotland tomorrow but I don't know whether to go up the A68 or stick to the M74.

DS is being driven FROM Leeds to Edinburgh this weekend. He's reached Gateshead. He's thoughtful enough to put up his live feed as to his route. The hire car isn't a 4x4 which concerns me. I'm just praying they've gritted. We haven't seen any gritters in Wales yet, so I'm being Uber protective mama. They've planned this weekend for four of them for months.

Not sure what the Scottish Borders are like, hopefully someone will be along soon with an answer. The snow does seem to have been hugging the East Coast this past couple of days though. Safe journey.

Monday morning is starting to look quite interesting now too, low pressure modelled perhaps to graze the south, potentially bringing some snow into the south.

Snow is some of the hardest weather to forecast in this country. the difference between rain and snow can be just 1-2c in temperature, or a slight change in humidity, or the exact positioning of a low pressure. It's often very marginal. Often small scale features can pop unexpectedly on the day, bringing surprise snowfall.

If it drizzles with rain a bit, unexpectedly, people just have a bit of a moan. But even light snow can cause issues. People really do notice whether or not a forecast appears accurate or not when it comes to snow. I'd advise for people to not rely on forecasts too much, but rather look at the probabilities of precipitation and how close the temperature is to 0c.

Leeds to Edinburgh is just straight up the A1(M) which is a motorway/major A road. Even if they come off and go up the A68 it will still be gritted as it's a busy A road. That's shocking if major routes in Wales haven't been gritted yet.

RigorMortisRadio · 01/12/2023 14:08

@Beckafett thanks! I'm only 45 minutes away but its not snowed t all here

I spoke to someone in Wooler this morning, and she said it was pretty bad. She wasn't planning on going out.

justasking111 · 01/12/2023 15:01

He's reached Berwick on Tweed so am guessing that the A1 is okay

Freezingtoes · 01/12/2023 15:44

@feellikeanalien I live in the Scottish Borders. It’s absolutely freezing here, the main roads are fine and have all been treated. Some of the side roads are a bit snowy in places but you will be okay. Wrap up warmly!!

Desecratedcoconut · 01/12/2023 15:53

We have some increasingly thick fog here and it's -1c. Not looking forward to driving this evening.

justasking111 · 01/12/2023 16:11

Fog forecast for DS, I loathe fog

I'm going to the football tonight and trying to figure out just how many layers I can pile on.

It's about 8 before you start to not be able to bend your arms. Outer layers do have to be a larger size though inner layers need to be thermal base layers and not too thick!

Thanks for that. Sounds like your weather is the same as ours. I'll only be on the A68 and then the Edinburgh bypass. Sounds like it will be ok.

We like to go that way so we can stop at the coffee shop in Soutra!!

Freezing cold in Tameside - no snow but a thick frost - the recycling bins are all frozen shut!

I can see snow on the hills looking over to the Peaks.

Off to Lancaster and the Lakes tomorrow for my DD's birthday - was planning on taking a packed lunch but it looks too cold so we will be finding a nice pub or cafe for lunch!

My next door neighbour taught me how to open frozen wheelie bins. Just give the lid a thump.
I’ve spent years wrestling them or pouring warm water on them, even sometimes propping them slightly ajar with pebbles the night before 🤦‍♀️

Hope your DD has a great birthday!

ItsTapasTime · 01/12/2023 18:48

This just popped up on my Facebook memories. Are we on course for a winter like 2010? This was on the South Coast.

Snow watch.
beenrumbled · 01/12/2023 18:56

@LooksABitElvish ooh why have I never been told this? Thank you!

Looking at the forecast there might be snow in the lakes tomorrow afternoon.

LooksABitElvish · 01/12/2023 19:44

Ah be careful out there everyone!

Guess what I'm going to be trying tomorrow 😂 Do I need to do it in the centre or ?

LooksABitElvish · 01/12/2023 20:19

😂😂 I’m not sure it matters, I usually just hit the centre front. I think it breaks the ice seal. I wish you could’ve seen my face when I tried it after he told me 🤣

hoochycrone · 01/12/2023 20:56

Wise words @OhYouBadBadKitten 🥰

santaexpress23 · 02/12/2023 00:08

We’ve had snow for around the last two hours here in Ayrshire. It’s been so so cold today I didn’t see it happening.

Desecratedcoconut · 02/12/2023 06:14

We have -5c, feels like -7c. Which is too cold. Hive has been kicking the heating on all night which hardly ever happens. We didn't get any snow overnight but might get more this afternoon. That'd do nicely, it would make a festive backdrop to putting up the tree.
