While for many it is milder today, it will become colder again tomorrow. The main snow risk starts on Thursday where both GFS and ECM show a risk of snow in the south into the midlands and Wales, away from south eastern coastal counties. They both model a low moving in from the Azores, bumping into cold air.

GFS takes this right into northern England and parts of Scotland.

As always, early days and so there is lots of uncertainty. We await the next model run

We get streamers here if the weather conditions are right. Coming in from the North Sea, and being funnelled in by the Tyne and the Wear, I think. One year I watched them on a weather radar site.

Whereabouts on the Thames might this streamer happen?

The Met Office forecasts covering the tidal Thames area (Teddington lock down to the coast) are all fairly benign at the moment (Mon overnight cloudy 2C, feels like -2C, 10% chance precipitation; Tues even some sun, 4C but feeling like -1C, <5% chance precipitation). Snow in London would be fun though!

Pembrokeshire Dangler sounds like a real ale served in a fisherman's pub, or perhaps a naice artisan cheese!

Unknowable at this point, but they extend from the estuary inland.

Monday afternoon/evening looks to be a key time to look out for anything that develops, if it does.

Id entirely ignore app forecasts at this point. But that 10% chance is giving a hint.

With all this water about mini rivulets are crossing roads. Impossible to see in the dark. I ain't looking forward to that turning to ice. 🙈

We get a similar streamer effect in Dublin from the Isle of Mann if the wind is coming from NNE-ENE kind of direction. During the Beast from the East around Christmas 2009, Cork airport was open and fully operational, and Shannon airport as well with no snow and sunshine, but Dublin airport was getting continuous dumps of heavy snow and couldn't get cleared before the next lot landed...so lots of people changed flights to Ireland to regional airports or to ferry tickets from Wales.

I'm watching Dublin (cold and to get colder), Copenhagen (snowy today) and Brussels (goes below zero for nearly all the next 10 days!). Just hoping dd gets home ok on Monday and I get out again on Wednesday...

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 06/01/2024 21:57

"Thames streamer".. Yes a fab new term!!.. Tuesday /snow, wow! Do we know how much?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/01/2024 23:25

Monday into Tuesday Will and it's a chance, rather than a definite, so no possibility of putting snow depths onto it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2024 08:38

I think there may be some sleet and perhaps a little snow mixed in in the precipitation eastern side of Kent.

I've been reading up on Thames Streamers, and the one in 2009 covered London in snow - right as far as Croydon

I'm trying to work out the geography - would one typically around Canvey Island (where the Thames narrows from wide mouth to more river/estuary? And I suppose how far it reaches depends on the strength?

Does the state of the river make any difference? There's been so much rain draining in to the Thames that the flow is extremely strong and there's a red warning advising no boats to navigate

River Thames: current river conditions - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Edited to add: Tidal Thames has similar warning against all non-powered boats

SquirmOfEels · 07/01/2024 12:10

PS: Met Office has just updated and there's now 60% chance of snow on Monday at Canvey Island (but not for Greater London)

dingit · 07/01/2024 12:23

Wow. I will be 56 on Tuesday and can't remember a snowy birthday. I know there was deep snow the day I was born, it was dad's favourite story that he walked to hospital to see me. Smile

My Facebook memories 13 years ago.

It's snowing again, enough already.

DH works at Gatwick and they've just had a company-wide alert for snow tomorrow. Not sure if I trust them more than @OhYouBadBadKitten !

justasking111 · 07/01/2024 21:46

I've just peeked at the weather down south east Sheesh it's much colder down there than where we are.

It’s absolutely Baltic where i am, London/Surrey border. It smells like snow….

BatshitCrazyWoman · 08/01/2024 06:11

Just looked at the Met Office app for my area - heavy snow forecast ❄️!!

I'm going into the office today, I'm going to have to keep a (literal) weather eye on the trains as a couple of flakes and there are none. No snow forecast for my central London office...

Snow watch.
Just12345 · 08/01/2024 07:10

Looks like we have snow forecast from 9am here in Kent. It is so cold

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/01/2024 07:16

Morning all. Snow and sleet showers have started pushing in from the east today. Currently primarily affecting the NE and Kent. I'd expect to see these push in further across the SE to affect parts of Sussex, Surrey and possibly Hampshire. However, snow showers could pop up elsewhere too.

Think it's a favoured area for today.

Morning all.

North East Coast (England) here and 2 degrees. Precipitation currently falling as rain, though I'm guessing it's a little sleety. Its still rather too dark outside to tell.

Klingfilm · 08/01/2024 10:07

So chilly today, haven't had the heating on this much for ages. I live in a north Hampshire town with a bit of a reputation for snow when nowhere else has any. Possibly the highest point in the area? Fingers crossed we get a dusting.

wrigleys123 · 08/01/2024 10:09

In Essex here, had a dusting and nothing more! Was hoping for heavy snow to take the kids sledding!

Just12345 · 08/01/2024 10:19

It's finally started here in Kent. Fairly heavy at the moment but not settling and the wind is blowing it everywhere
