As we’re a few weeks away from the start of meteorological Winter (1st December), some weather websites have some thoughts on what the weather might have in store for us over the next few months.

The Weather Outlook started very early, in September Xmas Shock but October's thoughts are here ~ The Weather Outlook.
And Netweather’s thoughts are here.

Yes, there was definitely a cold stint last year complete with wave of busted water pipes.

Oh I just remembered, yes

when I finally got away from mum's for a few days, I went back, it had snowed and the cab from the station couldn't get up mum's road.

good reminder - at least I'm not doing freezing journeys anywhere. Can't believe I was dumb enough to go for a walk today, it's made me ragey.

Remember when there was a heavy curtain over the front door in the winter, winter curtains anyone?

Partnersuntheuk · 05/12/2023 20:03

Yes I think it was below zero for 10 days or something like that at the beginning of Dec last year

Desecratedcoconut · 05/12/2023 20:04

We had summer curtains and robust winter curtains over the windows growing up but not over the door because my Dad was obsessed with fire hazards.

InMySpareTime · 05/12/2023 20:13

We have a door curtain, it makes a noticeable difference to the hallway in winter.

grass67 · 05/12/2023 20:15

I have curtains on doors, plus interlined curtains on all windows, and draught excluders it just makes sense, especially with gas prices.

justasking111 · 05/12/2023 21:59

My DIL has curtains in the hall because of large glass panels either side of the front door. They make a difference she says.

My grandmother had curtain over the front door and inside the sitting room door. Also snake like draught excluders.

There's a reason we had small windows in houses and open fires upstairs and down once upon a time

Pixiedust1234 · 05/12/2023 22:18

I have a thermal door curtain over my front door. And another over the pantry door which still has the original cold marble shelf making it even more chilly. Used to have a third over the back door but when we got a cat flap the cat complained about the curtain 😬. They really do make a huge difference.

Monthly forecast from Netweather ~ they think it's going to be an unsettled end to the year but hopefully some sunshine in there as well.

What weather forecasts are people using?

They were definitely better a few years back, really accurate, you could time leaving the office by them.

Today was meant to be possible light showers and it fucking poured down! I pretty much walk everywhere now but it's time to just factor in a lot more cabs I think. Or any day that's not 100% clear, don't leave the flat.

justasking111 · 12/12/2023 15:52

We've got some flooding this today, torrential rain I hit some humongous puddles and at one stage a torrent of water pouring down someone's garden down the steps into the road. Then broken traffic lights on the roundabout, which meant it was fun to negotiate.

Pixiedust1234 · 12/12/2023 20:42

Well...I've lost my muddy garden today and I'm just waiting for a wild duck or two to fly past and think "that's a lovely looking pond, I should drop down for a swim"

The dogs have just come in muddy footprints galore. It's a swamp. Yesterday squelched across the lawn to pick some herbs
Today I haven't been out but after so much rain a herd of elephants would be in ecstasy rolling in it

LooksABitElvish · 13/12/2023 00:24

Our outside space looks less like a garden and more like a moat as time goes on. I might try growing rice ☹️

Desecratedcoconut · 13/12/2023 23:06

I know I'm not really coming to the party with a scientific contribution here but I thought I'd point out that the snow globe shaker thing has gone from 33% to 40% chance of snow for my region at Christmas!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2023 11:04

I'm mostly posting on the Christmas weather thread due to shortage of time, but I'll pop this here too as it is very pertinent.

Any settled spell this weekend looks very short indeed, with some very unsettled weather quite possibly moving in around the Christmas period. Timings and any details are impossible at present, hence no blow by blow detailing of possibilities over Christmas. There is the risk of gales and snow, especially in the north, but perhaps a wider risk elsewhere.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2023 11:05

The flooding situation is grim. Water tables are so high now that it really doesn't take much before places reflood after clearing. Miserable winter this one!

countrygirl99 · 14/12/2023 11:18

2 lots of friends were flooded out over Christmas 2020. 1 Christmas Eve and 1 Boxing Day. It's bad enough being flooded but they had to cope with covid restrictions as well.
Fingers crossed for anyone at risk this winter.

Pixiedust1234 · 14/12/2023 22:56

I'm mostly posting on the Christmas weather thread

*sighs didn't know there was one 😳 but i'll find ya , ma pretties!

MotherOfCatBoy · 24/12/2023 09:22

So, is this horrible wind still Storm Pia, or a different one, or just generally shit British Christmas weather?
South Wales - strong winds, drizzle. Forecast to be slightly less windy tomorrow but still breezy and pouring down. Lovely.

Desecratedcoconut · 24/12/2023 09:24

It's whipping around our house. But it's dry and warm for winter, 14c, can't leave the overflow beer outside the back door to stay cold this year.

I suppose it's too late to hold out any hope for an Artic Blast?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 24/12/2023 11:25

The wind here on the NE coast of England is something else today, and we are used to windy! I've just checked the forecast and it's still a westerly, but it feels very squally.

What's the best site for wind gust info?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 24/12/2023 11:28

Ah. I've just been on Netweather and see we (Newcastle) are in the top 4 for todays 'top 20 gusts' at 63mph.

MotherOfCatBoy · 24/12/2023 11:39

Oof. Gusting to 46 mph here so not as bad!

nannynick · 24/12/2023 12:38

Went for a walk along the top of the cliffs and the wind is picking up. NE Scotland coast near Peterhead.
