Old thread:https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/weather/4767111-spring-weather-watch?page=6&reply=126854914

After the dramatic weather for some over the last few days, mostly covered in the Thunderstorm warning threads, I think it's time to switch to a new thread. After all, we are two weeks into meteorological summer.

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ... It...

Oh no Tokyo That's disappointing.

@GloriaSmud it was definitely very loud and so clear I'm not surprised the sound carried!

UnDruidlyWords · 13/06/2023 15:35

It's too hot.

That's all I have to say about that.

gingercat02 · 13/06/2023 15:44

@OhYouBadBadKitten love your weather threads but usually just lurk.
Much as though my garden would like rain, we in the NE have only just got the weather everywhere else has had for ages. So I would like to keep the sun for s while 🙏

Pixiedust1234 · 14/06/2023 01:02

At least two schools were forced to close yesterday due to having no water.

Sheesh, that's not good Shock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/06/2023 16:31

It looks like we might be in for another chance of rain as we go through this weekend and into the next week. Perhaps in the form of thunderstorms, which aren't really the best way of getting rain, but also a general chance of some heavy showers. Remaining warm/hot.

Is this officially a heatwave? If so, is it a national heatwave or just in a few places?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/06/2023 16:54

Certainly many places have reached their official criteria of a heatwave. You might already know that different areas need to reach different temperatures for at least 3 days to meet the threshold. This is because some areas are more heat adapted than others. I'm not sure whether everywhere has reached their threshold.

Essex is hotter than they are saying, I think.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/06/2023 18:00

Is that from the map Emma? It's a map of the heatwave threshold criteria, not current temperatures being reached.

Oh it's not from the map but from the temps I see listed online. It's probably that "weather stations are in the shade" thing.

Happy summer weather watchers!

In Dublin, we had a couple of quite loud individual bangs of thunder on Monday night, about 20 minutes apart after midnight. And the rain it went from 10" left at the bottom to full overnight.

Hot, muggy and calm since. Sailing racing cancelled last night for all, even dinghies (which only need a puff to go). Sea warmed up to 17 degrees locally (per Dublin Bay Buouy). Barely a breath again today, I'm expecting to see no racing (different dinghy class) tonight.

In fact, it was so still, and also cloudy (and a few generation stations offline) on Monday, that while we had avoided a "system alert" all winter, we had one on Monday (where gap between electricity generated and electricity demanded by everyone is closer than is comfortable and where power cuts could happen).

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 14/06/2023 19:36

How far ahead do people know what will happen with the weather? I'm autistic and sensory overloading with the heat and brightness. I'm struggling to cope already, so I'm wondering is this likely to continue for the next few months or is there a chance it will be cooler and more bearable? I have seriously already had enough summer for the year.

EmmaEmerald · 14/06/2023 20:12

the flat has reached 26 (I'm in a new place, not the boiling place I lived before).
yesterday it reached 24 so I reckon today was hotter.

probably little microclimates everywhere.

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/06/2023 21:38

SW must have reached or be near to reaching official heatwave. Can’t remember what max temp was on Friday but yesterday and today definitely over 25vand tomorrow forecast to be too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/06/2023 21:38

Flopsies It depends on the weather set up. A really good place to get a general feel for which way things are going is to scroll down to the bottom of this link.
https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/

You'll see that by two weeks out and four weeks out, the met office talk about the overall picture and the way they generally think it will trend.

I'm afraid for you that it does look pretty likely that it will stay warm/hot for a while to come.

There is strong model disagreement for Sunday. It could either be wet, or patchy thunderstorms and dry in many places. Flexibility will be needed for any Father's day plans.

OP posts:
EmmaEmerald · 15/06/2023 11:31

Today is hotter than yesterday

that wasn't forecast.

justasking111 · 15/06/2023 13:53

30.6 here. I have a touch of Heatstroke here after yesterday's heat. So staying indoors quaffing water

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/06/2023 15:30

Take care Justasking.
It does look like we are transitioning, at least for a time from hot and dry, to very warm and wet. Though the nature of the transition is yet to be determined. However, be prepared for some lively thunderstorms in places again.

Thank you very much, Kitten. That does look like bad news for me.

UnDruidlyWords · 15/06/2023 16:17

I cooked my head yesterday, even though I was wearing a hat most of the day.

Warm and wet is fine by me, we need the rain.

justasking111 · 15/06/2023 17:02

Looking at the weekend Ireland is getting a drenching we will benefit from in Wales.
