Thunderstorm warning Saturday 10th June.

Some areas could see the late spring drought break dramatically on Saturday. Thunderstorms could bring torrential rain, with associated surface flash flooding. Other hazards include hail, lightning and high winds.

A big caveat for those in the warning area though. Many areas may well stay dry. We cannot forecast the exact location of thunderstorms and heavy rain. The risk that they will occur in a region can be flagged, but not exactly where they will crop up.

So, if you are planning an event, stay weather aware and be prepared to change plans as needed.

On Sunday, the risk of storms continues, but perhaps not quite as high as Sunday and I think the risk area will shift more eastwards and perhaps northwards.

I'm going to Bromley 12-1600 should I wear sandals or ankle boots?I looked at the weather map on met office but I'm still not sure

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/06/2023 10:08

While anywhere in the warning area may see storms (and actually outside the area too) The highest risk for severe storms does seem to be in the west Midlands, north west and northern parts of Wales.

Remember, risk does not equal certainty and even in areas where storms develop, not all will see storms.

Thanks OYBBK :)

Can I add in an extra warning? Since thunderstorms often have associated hail, if you have any young plants and/or soft fruit bushes, please make plans to protect them. I use a variety of things, from cloches to netting, fleece or even tea towels thrown over small plants! Or if they're in pots you could move them to a protected place. I'm speaking from the perspective of losing an entire redcurrant crop one year thanks to hail stripping the ripe fruit clean.

Also, if you are interested in watching storm chasing then YouTube has a number of chaser channels (USA storm-based). Please DM me if you would like to know more, don't want to spam/advertise here!

No problem!

Met Office have updated warnings. They havent removed the eastern areas out of it. Interesting! They have though put more of the NW into it, which reflects latest observations.

The main risk is for torrential rain, with associated flooding. Hail to rather a lesser extent, but as crunchy says, it can be pretty destructive.

The metoffice warning area sort of matches what netweather think in their Storm Watch forecast.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/06/2023 11:34

Sundays warnings have been updated too. So if you dont see storms today, you have a second chance tomorrow.

My weather widget showing storms on Monday (SW)

Praying for rain.

justasking111 · 10/06/2023 12:53

Cloud cover here now in N Wales, light and wispy. Every door propped open to cool down. If the wind gets up then we will get a weather change

Makinglists · 10/06/2023 14:42

We had rain overnight - proper rain! I'm in sw Devon. Its now very humid and getting hotter with some cloud. Good to have rain its been weeks now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/06/2023 14:57

Proper rain would be lovely!

No storms yet, but showers are starting to develop. These will head NW.

Makinglists · 10/06/2023 15:40

Just looked at netweather radar and it looks like storms kicking off round Oxford.

Irridescantshimmmer · 10/06/2023 15:43

Thanks for posting this excellent advice.

I have 2 window mounted solar systems which I grounded yesterday.

Do you use https://www.lightningmaps.org/ ?
It shows live lightning around the world. I use it for my dog as it also shows the radius of where the thunder will be heard.

In north east wales here and it is sunny and still. Had a look at the forecast and no storms until Monday afternoon here! My garden desperately needs some water.

PriamFarrl · 10/06/2023 15:59

We have a warning here in Suffolk but it’s still clear skies here. It’s a shame as we need the rain, but it never rains here.

Actually, @OhYouBadBadKitten is bound to know, is there anywhere I can see data like rainfall last week etc?

Theimpossiblegirl · 10/06/2023 16:08

It's a bit muggy in North Somerset but nothing exciting here yet. I really want a storm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/06/2023 16:14

Priam will have to come back to you on that after the storms.

Building up nicely now.
