Spring Weather watch

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

Unpredictability is the hallmark of our weather! What is the latest date in the year it has ever snowed? In my head I am always thinking that it could snow right up until the end of May, but that might just be my brain toying with me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/04/2023 07:25

The risk for snow is even higher for the NE according to TWOs algorithm.

I'll try and do a bit of an analysis later on today.

I don't know about the latest date for UK snowfall, but in 1975 it snowed in early June.

Just as long as it doesn't turn into an April like 1981 Grin

I've seen snow (in Yorkshire) in every month except July.

Although August was a fudge as it was actually a very heavy hailstorm that left the ground white over, but it makes a better story!

countrygirl99 · 18/04/2023 11:23

Ice out of one of my O Level exams to that snow (giving away my age there)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/04/2023 09:53

For those in the south, thankfully it looks like the cold might not really penetrate into the south too much.

Tricyrtis2022 · 19/04/2023 10:01

Does 'south' include Oxfordshire? I'm never sure.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/04/2023 10:19

I don't think I can be a precise as that. I generally think as Oxfordshire as roughly in the middle of England. Though that's not really true, it's somewhere in Leicestershire/Lancashire/Warwickshire.

Tricyrtis2022 · 19/04/2023 10:28

No one knows, do they 😅

LittleFreakJezebel · 19/04/2023 10:43

We had snow in Leeds on the 11th April in 2021 (just checked my camera roll for exact date, my memory isn't that good Grin) but that's the latest I can ever remember it being, and it was only a 30 minute flurry!

cormorant5 · 19/04/2023 10:55

@Tricyrtis2022 As you say, nobody knows, I live on border with Northamptonshire.
Breeze today has keen edge.
Getting fed up with this overcast.

Pixiedust1234 · 19/04/2023 13:30

Okay, so which one of you have sent these nasty gusts of wind my way (East Midlands) for the past couple of days? The sort of gusts that made my wheeliebin have a little sidestep or two 👀

EmmaEmerald · 19/04/2023 14:10

Another phase where media headlines are making me wonder what country they are discussing in weather termsI don't see a lot but from papers on the Tube on Monday, 20c was imminent this week
I was puzzled because I could see from the forecast, no way was that happening

I'm still wearing my big winter coat in the morning, there's maybe a brief period at lunchtime that it's not needed.

mum's heavy plants fell over in the wind and I'm convinced the wind knocked out a mobile mast or something as there's issues with that.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 19/04/2023 15:41

I've given up and put the heating back on. Some of my plants have blown over. April is a capricious month.

I'm about to light the fire. Forecast for the rest of the month is somewhat cool 😭

beenrumbled · 19/04/2023 20:29

Chilly on the way to and from work today but at least the sun was shining this afternoon

Furries · 20/04/2023 02:11

I lost track of the weather threads, but have found my way back!

Over the last month, lots of rain and quite a lot of strong winds. Also a number of days that look gorgeous, bright blue skies, but the temperatures just don’t seem to be rising. I e still been using my heated throw.

Easter weekend, left my house to drive to my mum’s. It was a beautiful day so wound the windows down to blow away the cobwebs. It’s about a 15 minute drive and part of it is more rural, so was enjoying the expanses of green fields and blue sky. A couple of minutes from mum’s I could see a “wall” ahead of me across the road. A sea fret had rolled in. Driving into it was like a switch had been flipped, the drop in temperature was immediate. Mum couldn’t believe that I’d driven most of the way there in glorious sunshine.

I would just like a few days where it starts to feel a bit warmer. Plus my tulips are not taking too kindly to the strong winds the last couple of days.

difficultlemons · 20/04/2023 13:54

Glorious down south today 😎

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/04/2023 14:16

And up north! Sat outside in summer clothes today.

PoseyFlump · 20/04/2023 18:09

Awful weather forecast for us vegetable gardeners. The plants are desperate to go out into greenhouses but it's still too cold at night. Fingers crossed May brings the sunshine ☀️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/04/2023 22:05

Well navigated back Furries.

After the cold spell next week things hang in the balance. Warm air appears to approach tantalizingly close and we may switch from feeling like winter to feeling like Summer in the space of less than a week.

My conservatory is full of plantlings ditto various windowsills. Darent put them in the greenhouse yet.

You're playing with my dreams! 😂

PoseyFlump · 21/04/2023 05:50

@justasking111 I'm currently taking them in and out every day. I've never bothered before but they're all so desperate! My aubergines are sulking.
