Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

Well navigated back Furries.

After the cold spell next week things hang in the balance. Warm air appears to approach tantalizingly close and we may switch from feeling like winter to feeling like Summer in the space of less than a week.

When longing for summer I always think about 1 May 1997 (election day) when it was suddenly really warm (I was working for the Labour Party so this is a super strong memory) let’s hope this happens this year , everyone is so desperate for warmth!

cormorant5 · 21/04/2023 07:31

Forecast for next week not much to look forward to in Midlands (North of Oxford)
Wind will keep temp in single figures. and Gloomy

PoseyFlump · 21/04/2023 08:03

Very true @stillherenow especially for the elderly and those desperate to switch their heating off.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 21/04/2023 09:56

Oh god! This weather is so frustrating and depressing.

Like others, I have so many seedlings now that really need to be moved outside under some cover. But with frosts on their way again and some very high winds (that almost ruined them yesterday when they were outside and I wasn't paying attention) I daren't do any more than pop them out during good days.

Plus, I'm desperate to be sat outside for morning coffee etc. No such luck at the moment.

Same here! Gardening is my job and I've got summer parties to prepare for. I've got hundreds of seedlings and young plants coming on and they're running out of space. I work on clay and spend half my time scraping mud off my tools and myself. It's so frustrating.

That sounds really, really frustrating.

I'm staring out of the window at the rain and just wishing that it would piss off.

@OhYouBadBadKitten, it is! I do at least have decent waterproofs, but they usually look like I've slept in a ditch. I washed them last week and when I went to check if they'd dried yet, there was a long streak of bird poo on the jacket 😂

justasking111 · 21/04/2023 12:11

I'm cold. Would light the fire but I've done my back in so can't kneel down. I'm really fed up too

KeziaOAP · 21/04/2023 12:36

Glad I cut the grass yesterday, raining here Gloucestershire feels cold at 6.5 degrees after yesterday's 16.

MotherOfCatBoy · 21/04/2023 15:23

S Wales here. Just really fed up with the lack of light. No sooner do we see the sun then the overcast cloud is back and it’s grey and meh again. Feeling like it’s been a long winter.

megletthesecond · 21/04/2023 16:10

I'm in and out with my sunflower seedlings every day. My neighbours must think I'm a woman obsessed.

stillherenow · 21/04/2023 21:48

I’ve got yet another cold brewing, I put my heating back on today, it’s been off but even in my oodie I was uncomfortable so I changed my thermostat from 16 to a heady 17 degrees today !

thaodien · 25/04/2023 12:05

Why is it still so bloody cold???
It's end of April ffs!!!

NewBootsAndRanty · 25/04/2023 12:32

I got caught on a hailstorm yesterday! Sitting outside in summer clothes again today Grin

justasking111 · 25/04/2023 12:53

Well I was tempted to moan until I saw the poor farmers in Spain it's 31c their crops will fry

Trees around my place are completely confused. Some in full leaf, some only just starting to be brave enough to put some leaves out. Normally I can bank on seeing the first green in mid March but it just hasn't been warm and sunny enough.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/04/2023 13:05

I think that's a very valid concern justasking. Parts of Spain are suffering from long term drought and temperatures are set to climb higher this week, with temperatures expected to peak in the high 30s. It's crazy.

It’s lovely here today. I don’t think the heating came on this morning.

Sadly my garden is growing like you wouldn’t believe it. Mostly weeds.

EmmaEmerald · 25/04/2023 16:42

I heard the Met Office complained about media weather reports

meanwhile, no sign of any improvement really except maybe Sunday. I don't know the stats but I really don't recall April being this cold and grey.

LittleFreakJezebel · 25/04/2023 16:49

The weather has been much nicer than forecasted the last few days for us so I'm hoping it stays that way...chilly but plenty of sun.

Tricyrtis2022 · 25/04/2023 17:20

@EmmaEmerald, I think the spring of 2013 was similar to this one, cold and grey but once the weather warmed, everything caught up very quickly.

For me it's quite good as, although the weather has been chilly and grey, it's held back plants and there will be an impressive show once temperatures rise and the gardens I work in will look fabulous.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/04/2023 11:25

It came up on my FB memories that 7 years ago we had snow fall on this day. I think it is the chilly greyness that is the really notable thing. The average temperature doesn't look remarkably cold, but that's because we aren't getting large diurnal swings which are often common at this time of year.

It does look as though things will be warmer this weekend, with the chance of thunderstorms on Sunday. Temperatures look probably to dip some next week, but then for the Coronation weekend... perhaps pretty warm and pleasant, though there's also a rain risk too. I'll look at more detail for that weekend as we get a little closer.

My FB I got soaked doing a dog show for charity 😁

35c in Seville today sheesh 🥵

lovescats3 · 26/04/2023 18:44

That heat in Spain is worrying

EmmaEmerald · 26/04/2023 18:50

Is it rare for Spain to be boiling and us to be unseasonally cold? I would never normally have my big winter coat on in April.
