I'm going to sign off from 'official' weather duty for the evening, though I'll probably revisit the thread later. I'm going to settle down in front of the fire with a glass of wine and watch a film.

@OhYouBadBadKitten Enjoy your evening Wine and thanks for helping to keep us all sane safe.

Windstartingup · 18/02/2022 20:02

Thank you so very much Kitten!

Notonthestairs · 18/02/2022 20:12

Thank you for all the information and wise words kitten. I was certainly better prepared as a result. But I hope I won't feel the need to lurk on a weather thread again for a while. Grin

nannynick · 18/02/2022 20:27

No power, temperature 3 degrees outside, 17.7 indoors. Watching Netflix (pre-downloaded, I was prepared).
Village in Surrey, near M3j3. So in quite a built up area but clearly our power must be coming to the village by overhead lines.

Furries · 18/02/2022 20:32

North East Essex here. I am in no rush to experience today again in my lifetime! Am absolutely amazed that no one in my immediate vicinity has lost power. I was watching the cables flapping around like giant skipping ropes.

Three fence panels gone so far, but am expecting more to join them - the forecast for here still looks like periods of strong gusts until Tuesday. I forgot to buy wine, so can’t even curl up with a glass this evening - and I’m certainly not going out to buy any.

Hope everyone who has been travelling gets home ok. Fencing firms and tree surgeons are going to be very busy in the coming days.

Can’t believe some of the snarky comments in AIBU 😲

Fingers crossed to all for a good nights sleep tonight. And for those with horses/livestock, hope they are all doing ok.

All quiet here now. I'm switching my many weather apps off now and going to bed in relative quiet.
Thanks to you all for keeping me saneSmile

fruitpastille · 18/02/2022 20:35

@52andblue how was/is your journey? We are supposed to be getting the train to edinburgh tomorrow with the kids and I'm wondering whether to postpone 24 hours.

FuzzyPuffling · 18/02/2022 20:36

Thank you so much for all your weather wisdom kitten. Enjoy a restful evening.

crackofdoom · 18/02/2022 20:37

OhYouBadBadKitten is he the DCat who inspired your user name in his youth?!
Wind's steadily dropped in Cornwall throughout the afternoon, to the point where it's now only a standard Cornish gale Grin. At about 4.00 the bickering and whingeing rose to such a pitch that the risk of maternal explosion outweighed the weather risk , and I hustled the DSes into the van and we went to watch some waves (from a distance!) and kick around in the sea foam.

It's very sobering to read of the deaths today.

It's so quiet here now 😯

Poldhu?
HesterShaw1 · 18/02/2022 22:56

Honestly didn't realise there were so many of us Corns!

cheninblanc · 18/02/2022 22:59

Power is back on here and I'd like to say thanks to ohyoubadkitten. I manage nhs sites as an estates lead, two teens and an anxious husband. I was well prepared in all 3 for today, and even finished with an evening in the local pub. Thank you so much. You are so appreciated 💛

crackofdoom · 18/02/2022 23:07

HesterShaw
Is the right answer! 😆
I was highly impressed to see the beach cafe was closed. It's open 364 days a year! They were the very first ones to find a (safe) way to open up during lockdown, but Eunice defeated them!

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 18/02/2022 23:22

@FuzzyPuffling

Just "blowing in" from north Cornwall. Can't see out of my windows for the salt spray that has landed on them. From 5 miles away.
Gosh! Have you had salt on your windows before?
HesterShaw1 · 18/02/2022 23:24

I had my windows cleaned yesterday. What a waste of time and money - they're now opaque! About a mile from the sea.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 23:24

You are more than welcome :) You probably saved my dh from being sent blow by blow details, so I expect he's rather grateful I have an outlet.

My current BadKitten isn't the original Bad Kitten, but he lives up to the tradition totally.

I've noticed the wind up merchants. But it is precisely because the Met Office, local authorities and other organisations took such drastic action that the awful tragedies have been limited in number. My heart goes out to their family and friends. If people had gone out in their usual patterns it would have been much, much worse. Thousands of trees came down across the south today, blocking roads. As it is, local authorities are working through the night to make travel safe again. Roofs came off, walls collapsed. Storms like this that cause such a prolonged length of time of severe inland gusts are rare in England. Only 18 red warnings have ever been issued in total and they are reserved for only the most severe of impacts.

For those without power tonight - I hope you get it back soon and that it isn't too cold.

I'm back on www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weather/4353891-The-mumsnet-annual-winter-weather-watch-thread with the latest warnings, which are thankfully rather less than today.

In the mean time you can see where pesky eunice has got to on earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/surface/level/orthographic=-9.89,53.87,1680/loc=30.032,60.677

HesterShaw1 · 18/02/2022 23:28

We were talking about this this evening. Even last night a bunch of mates were saying, oh the hype is ridiculous etc. But the warnings undoubtedly saved lives. Storm and hurricane force winds are dangerous.

crackofdoom · 18/02/2022 23:29

Exactly! I kept catching myself thinking "Well, this is a bit of a non event, isn't it?", but that's BECAUSE we and everyone in the area were tucked up at home! If we'd all been out and about, I'm sure there would have been a lot more "interesting" anecdotes flying around on Facebook....😬

Totally agree, I've just managed to get the last word in on one of the other Eunice threads which is now full, I was so cross at this poster trying to belittle it all, just unbelievable.
