I'm sorry for starting this when we still have 200 posts to go, but I really should sleep and I'm worried that the previous thread will fill up. Here it is --> www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weather/4481220-Storm-Eunice please fill it, before using this one.

If you are so amazing and hard, why can’t you cope with one day of homeschooling?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 12:17

A gust has been provisionally measured at 122mph at the Needles. While this is a very exposed site, well placed for funneling, if it verifies it will be England's highest ever recorded gust.

@EngAng

Yeah, can't imagine what our Head was thinking about, moving to online learning for a day. Oh, hang on, maybe it was the 2500 students, 300 staff and the chance of trees landing on them on the way in, or the tiles flying past them when on site.
The thought process ey? What a precious headteacher they are for wanting to ensure safety for his staff and students.
misspercy · 18/02/2022 12:18

Anyone know when this storm is due to pass?

I'm in London and have a grocery shop scheduled for Sunday, but if it's still supposed to be awful then, I'll rearrange as the outside today does not sound like weather I want anyone to be driving in!

Lockheart · 18/02/2022 12:18

@Underparmummy

Ridiculous that we have all become so fucking precious nowadays.
Yet here you are whining about having to homeschool.
caranations · 18/02/2022 12:18

Oh bugger. We're in a terrace. House on the far end is starting to lose bits of their roof.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 12:18

Met office are saying it is starting to ease off in the far SW. That will be a relief to many.

Are you serious? There are loads of trees down round here and unpassable roads. Police and fire brigade sirens.

I think you may need to sign off. Agree with you saying that.

I've no idea where you are but here we are a red area and have had whole roofs ripped off blocks of flats.

This isn't preciousness but safety.

I'm sorry you're struggling with the effects of homeschooling and wfh and I know covid has made that very difficult for people.

But this weather is what it is and we need to do what we need to do

Expected to start easing off this evening into tomorrow morning.
daisypond · 18/02/2022 12:19

I’m heading into central London now.

PeeAche · 18/02/2022 12:19

Our 22 year old walnut tree has just come up at the roots and smashed our shed to bits. Feeling both sad and a bit afraid. Kids are crying. Can hear a neighbour outside furiously hammering something. 🤯

So from South Cornwall, North Coast (Portreath is about 2 miles if anyone saw that on the telly), I think we're past the worst of it now.

It's still very windy but the really bad gusts have subsided and we haven't had any for about 20-30 minutes now.

Highlights from this morning include

a neighbour's tree having the top ripped off and blown away.

a garden shed being blown across the farmers fields and then blown to pieces as it went

a very elderly neighbour being blown over (and rescued by me) - she thankfully only had bruises and was shaken up.

Loads of random debris blowing about.

So I would say the 'worst' of it lasted around 2h30 if that helps people still to get the worst of Eunice to plan things out.

I don't think it's as bad as the storm of '87 (I remember that well) but it's not far off.

I hope everyone is safe and warm and not being blown asunder

Yes it's feeling a little less noisy. Still a severe gale.

Maybe they can mend my electricity now 😂

This evening. There will be another, lesser storm tomorrow affecting southern coastal areas.

Mama1980 · 18/02/2022 12:22

I'm in Essex anyone know when it's expected to ease - is our red warning still due to lift at 3?

Someone’s canoe has just blown past my window, but power is now back on

Should be working now the power is back but we’re all addicted to BigJet TV

Why did this make me laugh?! I hope there was no one in the canoe!

baroqueandblue · 18/02/2022 12:23

Mind it doesn't blow shut behind you

Seems like it's stayed a bit further south than predicted.

122mph is quite something.

It might be salvageable. At Kew they lost a lot of trees in the 80’s storm. The storm lifted some trees, as they slowly worked their way through the carnage they found that some of the last ones had started to flourish and regrow. What happened was the lifting had actually helped the trees. Theyve replanted them and they are doing brilliantly. So well they now use it as a way to encourage the tree growth and do it to the trees on purpose.

They think it sort of shakes the impacted soil about a bit and gives the roots a better.
