This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

Now in red warning here, am trying to convince my sister to stay put train companies already saying would honour ticiets to travel on Saturday as she is ment to travel from Oxford back to NE Essex today via train

She seems to think it be fine by 5 when leaves Oxford but I suspect still be trees down on the line etc

RenegadeMasterx · 18/02/2022 05:05

Utterly terrified. Woke up at 3:30 and had a panic attack. I have GAD and weather has always frightened me, I'm really worried 😟

SonicBroom · 18/02/2022 05:06

I’ve been looking at the wind radar here www.radar-live.com/p/wind-speed-map.html?m=1 and it looks like SE will take the brunt of it doesn’t it, around 10-3 just as the warning says. Stay safe everyone

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 05:07

I don't know if the red warning is in case there is a sting jet, though one is possible. I purposefully haven't been talking the possibility because although there have been hints of one in the modelling and certainly this type of system, a shapiro-keyser low, I couldn't quantify the probability and didn't want to frighten people unnecessarily..

The met office explain it very well. www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/learn-about/weather/types-of-weather/wind/sting-jet

RenegadeMasterx, I am so laid back I'm horizontal but windy weather is my nemesis. Dh thinks I'm deranged because I've taken important things out of the loft. He knew when we met 17 yrs ago I had a " roof blowing off in the wind" fund.
I've got about 10 weather apps open. I feel much calmer when I can see what's happening. Even the wind speed dropping by one makes me feel a lot better. Not sure if that would work for you?

Wagsandclaws · 18/02/2022 05:12

Yes and the trouble is They can't say for sure just yet from what and where I've been reading.

It is showing up on a couple of models though, the met office have access to far more detailed info so I think they've called it right with such a large red area.

It's not a given but I do think it's something to be aware of in a 'just incase' sense of this storm.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 05:12

Renegade the thing to hold on to, even in severe weather, is that the vast majority of people are fine. There has been a lot of publicity and so hopefully most people will look after themselves and stay safe. Can you make yourself a little den for today with some music or films and what ever makes you feel safest? Do you have some techniques you've been taught to help with panic? In about 15 hours or so, this will all be over and you'll be through it.

I'm exactly the same as you, been horrifically anxious, I'm in a red zone for both wind and flooding as near lots of rivers. All we can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I've found this thread really useful. Stay safe, as the op said previously 'what will be will be' Flowers
Motorina · 18/02/2022 05:17

Suffolk. Woke ten minutes ago (damn menopausal bladder) and it was still eerily still. Now getting the odd intermittent gust. Have the pressure headache that many were describing earlier.

Now in the red zone.

I've spent a lot of time and money making my house power-cut resilient, and I think it's about to havea live test. Eeeek.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 05:21

@Aquarius1234

How windy does it need to be, for lots of tiles to come off roofs?
It entirely depends on the house, it's age, construction, type of tile and exposure.

One thing I must stress is that once the rain is through, it is not a signal that it is over. A feature of today will be the possibility of severe gusts while it is dry, even if the skies clear.

Just about to leave for work. Wish me luck, in the red zone now.

❤️ I'm trying to think that it'll be over by tonight (hopefully) I'm just dreading today, I feel really nauseous and my I can hear my heartbeat. I love my music and sometimes just use my AirPods to zone out but my stomach is doing somersaults, I will stay on this thread for updates rather than watch the news as that makes me more worried. Thank you for your comment xx
RenegadeMasterx · 18/02/2022 05:30

Francescaisstressed - oh gosh I hope everything will be ok. Sad it's really worrying isn't it? Natural disasters and the weather is utterly terrifying. I'm going to keep checking this thread today, can't face the news it frightens me. Stay safe ❤️

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 05:31

No problem :) Can you eat a little to try and settle your tum?

I think it's the fear that it's entirely out of our control. The weather is terrifying, when people talk of fears and say spiders, clowns etc for me it's always the weather Sad stay safe today, I think that could help me can you recommend a fairly accurate one atall? X
cabrillolighthouse · 18/02/2022 05:35

Got ahead of myself and posted on the other thread Blush. Set an alarm to go and do horses at 4.30am! Glad I did though as have a 2 mile drive down very narrow lane banked on either side by tall, ancient and increasingly frail trees. Still quiet in the valley and a bizarrely warm 11 degrees!!! Ponies, cows and birds all calm and quiet. Just the cock making his voice heard but that's to be expected on a farm just before dawn Grin. Can hear the wind in the trees up on the hilltop now and it's raining steadily but I'm now home with a Brew debating whether to go back to bed for a bit. Wilts - between Bristol/Swindon/Bath

WreckTangled · 18/02/2022 05:36

I've just woken to the warning too. Was going to go to the gym but dh didn't want me to and having seen the new warning I'm guessing that was sensible.

Just waiting for the teachers to wake up and see as I'm guessing primary schools in red should be closed.

battendown · 18/02/2022 05:40

Awake in Cornwall now - getting very windy out there.

Francescaisstressed · 18/02/2022 05:41

The wind is really picking up now hear in Cardiff, animals are spooked and very weird noises. Will let you know how we get on as I know we are due to get the first lot of it.
I hope everyone can keep themselves safe. I just looked out my window and saw a neighbour who works in the hospital starting to walk to work. Thanks to all those who are going to have to go to work today to help keep everyone else safe xx

scandikate · 18/02/2022 05:47

A lot of the primary schools in the new red area are on half term anyway. I'm in Essex and can hear the wind a little now after a very calm night.

WreckTangled · 18/02/2022 05:50

Oh yes I keep forgetting. West Sussex and Hampshire are on half term next week but London, Surrey, Kent and East Sussex are this week. Has caused a lot of bother for people living on the borders.
GloriaSmud · 18/02/2022 05:53

Leicester - wind getting up with the odd gust.
Looking at the GFS wind chart, I'm not surprised the SE is now under a red warning.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 18/02/2022 05:56

Peeing down in Cheshire.

Nice that the BBC is still showing out of date forecasts with only the original Red warning...

🙄

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/02/2022 05:57

Also posted on the part 2 thread which is starting to get busy.
Arpege 00Z - which is a high resolution French model shows a swathe of 70-80mph winds right across the south, including areas that are not in the red warning. I think that part of the reason for the red warning in the SE is the high population density - which makes it much more dangerous. On top of these winds there will be localised funneling effects, pushing wind speeds higher.

ICON - the German model brings wind speeds up a notch from arpege with the potential of gusts to 90 mph.

UK Met shows gusts a little over 80mph in central southern England, rising to almost 90 mph along the SE coast. London looks to see gusts 70-80mph.
