Snow watch

Grin

Might as well get going on this thread, though it is rather a tease at the moment.

The ECMWF model is hinting at the possibility of some much colder weather next week, perhaps bringing some snow to Scottish hills. BUT the met office are still going for quite a wild and wet affair instead.
The ECMWF shows quite an interesting scenario really.

Yay, the start of snow watch for another winter!

BobBobBobbing · 15/10/2020 19:48

I got all excited then!

I do love snow watch. Grin

meditrina · 15/10/2020 20:01

I rather like the sound of a wild and wet affair!!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/10/2020 20:01

It does look more promising than last year. Wink

OYBBK and Gloria have you heard anything about a 'front loaded winter' coming this year? Northants weather tweeted about it earlier this month.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/10/2020 22:48

I think some meteorologists were a bit concerned at how strong La Niña was looking and the implications that although we might get a cold start, that it would then turn zonal.

At the moment, things seem to have flipped back to potentially a very wild and wet start to winter, so who knows!!

Love a bit of snow watching. Never too soon in my book.

Sallycinnamum · 18/10/2020 09:52

Thank god! A bit of normality on here at last.

Love these threads and following in anticipation of a cold winter!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/10/2020 10:07

We should try and keep this going. It does feel a bit of a relief to think about something other than other stuff that shan't be mentioned because this is a place of weather related sanctuary..

Interesting to look at the met office contingency planning pages. They suggest that through to December it is more likely to be warmer than average, rather than colder than average, but rainfall is mostly likely to be average. But it does say that thanks to El Nina there is a higher probability of it being colder than average than would be usual for this set up.

I give you this for some soothing, in case of emergency.

Hi again OYBBK! Love these threads, am glued to them once winter hits.

I seem to remember a link last year to a man who predicted the weather (with varying degrees of accuracy...) using trees/plants/nature. Was always a good read, but just can't remember the website; does it ring a bell?

GloriaSmud · 27/10/2020 09:21

STST - this chap?

Christmas trees have gone up in Rovaniemi (the official home of Santa)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/10/2020 09:34

Something to factor in is the record low regrowth in arctic sea ice this autumn. Some parts of the arctic simply aren't icing over yet. Who knows what this will do to our weather patterns.

Interesting article

Thought a little 'bump' was in order as Netweather's Christmas forecast and Santa Shaker is back for another year!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2020 09:14

hooray! Yes and some models have been teasing a little for later this month too.

We're forecast snow by the end of next week here in south west Scotland!

Pinkywoo · 14/11/2020 09:22

Yay snow watch, my new winter coat arrived yesterday so I'm ready for it! I confessed to DH the other day that every day when I open the curtains a little part of me is disappointed with the lack of white stuff, he thinks I'm mental Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/11/2020 09:31

Madam, yes that certainly looks possible with the risk starting Wednesday, but increasing Thursday and into Friday especially. Mostly the risk is over Scottish hills, but by Friday the risk extends into some parts of northern England and possibly Wales too.

As ever, it's still a long way off yet.

Hello Grin no snow forecast yet for Edinburgh, but the temperature plummets on Thursday evening to 0C, so I can safely wear my monster winter coat without sweating Grin.

CarpeVitam · 19/11/2020 17:38

Another one hoping for some of the 'white stuff' this winter! ❄️ ⛄️❄️⛄️❄️
