Something to really watch. GFS model is really looking a bit crackers next week with high temps of perhaps 35c mid week and night minima in the mid 20s. I'll post more tomorrow, but it doesn't look like the traditional school holiday cool down

That sounds like a splendid plan :) anything nice you can watch on TV to collapse in front of? You are doing all the right keeping cool stuff. Do you have a freezer that you can cook your pillow off in? and a hot water bottle with cold water in it for your feet. When you get through this week you'll be able to give yourself a massive pat on the back.

Oh no, just seen the update! Shows around 35-36 here in Thursday. Have made FIL aware and instructed him to look after himself his DDog (he has a tendency to forget about the importance hydration).

Luckily DD is now off for the summer so can keep her cool in paddling pool under the marquee.

The heat looks like it's reaching Sweden too and am worrying about DM and DF who are not great in heat. DB had to take DF to hospital a couple of summers ago where he was diagnosed with dehydration following dizzy spells, was kept in on drop overnight. Absolutely terrible at keeping hydrated (but like FIL really).

Hope everyone is looking after themselves and thank you kitten for keeping us updated.

Kitten what's ECM please?

Cereal I have anxiety and my GP never said that, though they were more concerned about the asthma and pollution combo.

MollyButton · 21/07/2019 21:06

Whew - at least my DD seems to be moving out of the heat for her NCS trip.
Looks hot here - so I will be swooning around in Maxi dresses as I work later in the week. And can make use of the aircon at HQ on Tuesday.

I’m grateful you make these threads OYBBK. I’ve made sure my Gran has fans & food & squash etc in. She doesn’t cope well with the heat we have here & it’s worrying me a little I’ll be a good days worth of travelling away (inc getting to/from airports etc) should anything happen as she’s been unwell this year anyway. Her niece (my 2nd cousin) is going to check in on her for me while I’m gone too.

Rosa there are lots of different weather models and they can give wildly different forecasts. The met office talk extensively about their models www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/modelling-systems
but much of their data isn't available to the public.

If you look here www.theweatheroutlook.com/twodata/datmdlout.aspx you can see a list of some of the weather models.

ECM model (or ECMWF) www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts is the European model, it's based in Reading and supported by many european countries as a collaborative effort.

GFS is an american based model. I tend to use that most, simply because it has the most data available for free access.

Each model has different strengths and weaknesses. There are added complications, for example models are run multiple times in parallel with slightly different starting points which gives a measure of how stable any one particular forecast is. These are called ensembles. Sometimes I'll refer to GFS ensembles, especially for longer term forecasts and the christmas weather guessing threads.

[Rosa] it’s partly because the heat/feeling too hot mirrors anxiety symptoms, raised heart rate, sweating, shortness of breath. Now for me it’s psychological too as when these things happen any other time of year I can quickly cool down and go about my day without giving it too much thought. When it’s hot all the time I feel as though I’m constantly battling to try and calm down and fear not being able to get to a comfortable temperature. The things that can trigger an attack for example driving, having meetings, crowded places are near on impossible when I’m in such a heightened state of panic already. I always save holiday for heatwaves as it’s either that or go off sick.

[kitten] sadly my freezer is full but will definitely try the cold water in the hot water bottle. Netflix will distract me and I’ve bought salad for dinner so no oven required.

Bold fail Blush

Kitten and Cereal thank you.

I have been told that hot weather can make blood pressure drop as well - a problem for me and mum. Maybe we are just super weird. But the description of overheating and anxiety also makes sense.

last summer I just flopped about. I'm lucky that boss copes even less well with heat - no air con - so is very flexible at this kind of time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/07/2019 21:36

I reckon you can do this :)

What's the advice for old people then?
I was in a hot country last summer and the old ladies were on the 6am ferry to the mainland each day to do their shopping, presumably so they could be back (non a/c) before the heat..is it really any more complicated than that??

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/07/2019 21:40

That was to Cereal
Because I have PoTS (well controlled now) I make sure I have plenty of extra salt as well as water in this weather. I'll add a tiny pinch to a mix of diluted orange juice as I find that easier to drink.

I think elderly people find it harder to regulate their temps and find it harder to know that they are too hot. But like everyone else it's a matter of doing things early in the day as you say, plenty of fluid, a fan. But importantly having people check on them to make sure they aren't getting dehydrated and confused or unwell.

Kummerspeck · 21/07/2019 21:48

Bloody typical! I swopped some work days with a colleague so I'm working extra this week and he is off - happens every time! Wish I had his luck with the weather

dementedma · 21/07/2019 21:53

Hate to go against the grain but does this mean we might have some nice warm weather in Scotland for a change?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/07/2019 21:57

Thanks for these threads OYBBK

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/07/2019 08:49

I think that Thursday may be the hottest day, but we are looking at 3 days of really hot weather, especially in the south, eastern and central midlands, eastern England and south east. I think the hardest thing will be the Tuesday night and Wednesday night when night minima may not go below 24c. Some parts may reach 36c, possibly a little higher.

One big caveat is that if storms develop this could cap temperatures.

Thank you for your weather updates/warnings Kitten , I find them useful eg I had time to rope in help today to put our sail up which shades the south facing kitchen diner. Tomorrow I would not have access to the help.

WatcherOfTheNight · 22/07/2019 11:44

Thank you as always for your hard work & information @OhYouBadBadKitten ,I came looking for this thread (I knew there would be one Grin)
My body is broken can't regulate temperature amongst other issues,so it's good to know which days are expected to be worst & I will now plan accordingly.
