Something to really watch. GFS model is really looking a bit crackers next week with high temps of perhaps 35c mid week and night minima in the mid 20s. I'll post more tomorrow, but it doesn't look like the traditional school holiday cool down

So jealous if that wind

crisscrosscranky · 25/07/2019 19:24

Nothing in South East Essex yet but sky looking a bit black 🙏🏻

BestIsWest · 25/07/2019 19:39

Had a few spots of rain in Westminster and city

RosaWaiting · 25/07/2019 19:57

Sunny here in north London and xcweather has adjusted us to having no storm at all Sad

magimedi · 25/07/2019 19:58

Storm in Eastbourne came to very little - 10 mins of hard rain, a few thunderclaps & some gusty wind. But the temp has dropped to an arctic 26 (!) but the humidity has gone up to 68%.

nannynick · 25/07/2019 20:11

Humidity - that is the water content of the air isn't it?

Current humidity in my flat is 57% with temp of 28.2. My thermometer thing is not saying if this is Dry, Wet or Comfortable.

Is there some ratio between the temp and humidity which makes the environment more comfortable for us to be in? On a hot day like this do we want more humidity or less?

RosaWaiting · 25/07/2019 20:13

I always want less humidity
Dry heat is more comfortable for me.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 20:41

nannynick we need less humidity. Relative Humidity is the amount of water that can be held in the air. The warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold and so the actual amount of water in the air for any given reading of humidity is higher when it is warmer iyswim.

At cold temperatures the air can hold relatively little, so we get fog when the air gets saturated. We would need huge amounts of moisture for it to be foggy when it is warm.

From the storm thread "It looks like a real belter in the East but sadly (for me) it's too far east. I'm hoping more will develop to the west of them, but there's no guarantee It always seems to be the way. In the North it appears to be petering out now. "

Today's Storm forecast from Netweather.

Iambuffy · 25/07/2019 20:55

I've just had a cold bath.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 21:08

Tomorrow could still be pretty hot for a time in the far eastern side of England.

If you are in London, look up at the clouds right now. If they look like dangling boobs hanging downwards from the cloud base then it is mammatus clouds. Quite unusual over here.

I think they need to update their forecast Gloria to emphasize the developments in the east.

Was going to say we are in between the two big areas of storms/ ex storms showing on the ,24hour map. But then two flashes have appeared to the south of us. I hope I do not have to do the unplug everything lark again.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 21:17

lol!

Thanks Kitten, that’s not a cloud formation I’ve heard of before Grin

nannynick · 25/07/2019 21:20

54% humidity now... so it's dropping but slowly. Temp still the same. I need a breeze... any chance of some wind on Surrey/Berks border?

RainbowPanda · 25/07/2019 21:26

Just googled mammatus clouds.. amazing!
If anyone in London sees these, please post a picture!

RunningNinja79 · 25/07/2019 21:29

I just hope any thunder comes earlier than the other night. It woke me up at half 3 and looked spectacular, but I wanted to sleep. I enjoy watching a good storm.

Talking about offering posties etc water. I saw a post on FB asking people to offer water and toilet facilities (drinking more water has to come out) to them. Ive been at work all day so unable to help myself. Its not something that I would have thought about if Im honest, but in future I certainly will.

GloriaSmud · 25/07/2019 21:29

I think they need to do an update too, OYBBK.

Mistigri · 25/07/2019 22:11

My daughter was in Dunkirk today escaping the heat in Paris - it reached 41C. That's utter madness. The city exceeded its previous record maximum temperature by a full three degrees.

The Météo-France twitter feed has a long thread with all the new records set today. Many places in Northern France with reliable >40C readings and often huge margins over the previous records.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 22:20

It's an astonishing period as you say Misti, records totally smashed and it's only July.

Thunderstorms have disappeared from my weather app. I’m disappointed.

SkelterHelter · 25/07/2019 22:40

I can vouch for it being unbearable in France! Have barely moved for days. This is the second heatwave of the summer here, and the first was bad enough. We had a couple of storms last week, but just thunder and lightning, no rain. It's going to be 8° hotter at midnight tonight than it will be at 8 O'Clock tomorrow morning. How strange is that?

Skyejuly · 25/07/2019 22:52

Mega storm in suffolk been going on 2 hours. Still sweltering...I just want to sleep. Looks 29 in suffolk again tomorrow.
