Can't promise that I'll be able to add as much as I usually do (not very well atm) so its quite likely I might miss stuff but I've added a few thoughts to that thread re the current set up and tis easier if I just keep it in one place.

Ooooh, an amber warning! :o

DialsMavis · 03/02/2012 13:46

Noooo I want to stay in London now, and wait for the snow. We only moved here in the summer and for the past 2 or 3 years DP has been stuck here due to the snow, will be most displeased if I get stuck in the New Forest this year and miss out on the fun

Saltire · 03/02/2012 13:50

OOh we've gone up to an Amber alert too!

Pascha · 03/02/2012 13:54

Hmm. Amber warning but sounds like sleet this far south, yuk. I'd rather it was like now, crisp and sunny and about 0 degrees.

travellingwilbury · 03/02/2012 13:59

We have got stupid light snow for a stupid hour in the middle of the night on saturday now Sad

Rubbish !

Won't bother oiling the runners on the sledge now .

tak1ngchances · 03/02/2012 14:06

Was v confused about conflicting reports so I tweeted @metoffice saying "how come there's an amber snow warning over London for Saturday but the forecast shows no snow". They've just written back saying "Weather warnings take priority over forecasts. If you are looking at a symbol this only represents the dominant situation".
So I THINK that means I should get my wellies ready for snowman-building.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/02/2012 14:09

Thank you backinthebox, I've not looked at metars for a while and forgot that they can be quite a handy little assessment tool. I'm unsure why they have PROB30 - that doesnt sound quite right!

ok, going to have a look at the models and see what they say :)

Wheeee!! Go kitten GO!

TobyLeWolef · 03/02/2012 14:17

OYBBK, you are like a crystal ball reader. Only with facts. And science. And less jangly woo bells and floaty scarves.

Portofino · 03/02/2012 14:18

Ooh - it has just started snowing in Brussels. It looks weird though - I am on the 12th floor and the snow is going up rather than down.....

ChasTittyBeltUp · 03/02/2012 14:24

I have heavy snow in Cheshire tomorrow afternoon!

headfairy · 03/02/2012 14:26

Porto - groovy, gravity defying Belgian snow :o

I have heard that at the top of the Empire State building the rain can go up instead of down. Something to do with the wind blowing up the building, but I thought that was because Manhatten is just so windy with all those narrow streets and high rises.

daenerysstormborn · 03/02/2012 14:30

in rutland and we now have heavy snow forecast for saturday night

Portofino · 03/02/2012 14:31

That would probably make sense as I work in the financial district in Brussels and all the buildings near me are very tall! Unfortunately I have a meeting so can't try to sneak off home early.

fatsatsuma · 03/02/2012 14:31

OYBBK, while you're there, could you possibly say what you think will happen on Monday/Tuesday, in areas where the snow has fallen ie. is it going to melt quickly, hang around, keep re-freezing or what?

headfairy · 03/02/2012 14:36

It's the same phenomenon that makes skirts blow up and flash your knickers to all and sundry, unless of course you have lead weights in the hem like the Queen :o

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/02/2012 14:42

That took some time - it is really complicated!

ok, firstly, some of you coastal hampshire people may be rather Sad
Looking at the fax charts it looks like you will be in the warm sector so may not see much snow, it looks like a real icky mix sorry :( Perhaps that will change - it is borderline

Rebecca - It does look like you will be in the precipitation band mid afternoon with it getting heavy by early evening. I'm struggling to work out whether you'll get a decent amount of snow before it turns to rain. I think if I were you I would assume that it will be snow for a while at least (but may not be )

Tis going to be ridiculously tricky to say for sure who will get lots of snow and who will have a yuky rain/sleet/snow situation but I would prepare for snow if you are in the warning areas. In the amber areas people could see some very significant snowfall.

Something to note for anyone going clubbing tomorrow night - Temps of -2C are expected quite widely tomorrow night, with gusts of 30mph. This gives a wind chill of between -11C and -20C (depending on which calc you use). Serious risk of hypothermia!

mankyscotslass · 03/02/2012 14:46

Am under the amber warning, but seriously doubtful.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/02/2012 14:51

my tea went cold doing that - anyone fancy making me a fresh brew?)

Monday/Tuesday. I'm not so great on snow melt rates!!!! I think in the south east there could be some thawing during the day and refreezing by night. A real ice issue! Further north into the central eastern areas (like bedfordshire, hertfordshire etc) /EA (away from the coast)/Lincolnshire (away from the coast), thawing will be a slower affair.

Please dont quote me on this though, we need to get this troublesome low out of the way first!!! Lets see how much we get before we guess how quickly it will vanish.

OYBBK. I have a question from my husband which is "Can you ask that Mumsnet lady if it will snow for my rugby game tomorrow in Surrey?". His match is at 2.30.
So he trusts you more than bbc weather!!!!!!! He wants to go back to the captain to see if they should play or not.

What do you reckon?

pigsinmud · 03/02/2012 14:56

I don't feel so excited now. The forecast for my are says heavy snow from 9-midnight and then sleet for the rest of the night on Saturday. My boys got snowball makers/throwers (?) for Christmas, we are all thermalled out and the girls have snowboots ..... i reckon we'll have a dusting. I'm too well prepared.

Perhaps I should chuck the bread out and pour the milk down the sink then we'll have loads.

WhatIsPi · 03/02/2012 14:59

Oh God - am flying out of gatwick on the 11th for super massive big holiday
