Can't promise that I'll be able to add as much as I usually do (not very well atm) so its quite likely I might miss stuff but I've added a few thoughts to that thread re the current set up and tis easier if I just keep it in one place.

you might get some for a bit Manky - you'll have to rush out and enjoy anything that comes (poor cat!)

-8 in Gloucestershire and my son is camping this weekend. He's a burly explorer scout and up for it, but I fear for some of the smaller scouts.

whomovedmychocolate · 03/02/2012 07:58

On a practical note, bubblewrap your external pipes. At minus 10 you are at risk of them rupturing if they are not protected. Have been out and given ours a cosy blanket and bubblewrap just in case.

whomovedmychocolate · 03/02/2012 07:59

mankyscotslass - our cat is terrified of snow and uses our ensuite bathroom rather than venture out. Apparently they hate having anything touching their tummies which explains the vertical leaping when they run through snow.

Whatevertheweather · 03/02/2012 08:00

-8 here this morning (near Portsmouth) BBC weather has just said rain here tomorrow not snow SadSadSad

moonmother · 03/02/2012 08:03

currently minus 5 in Bedfordshire. I am not looking forward to the school run Hmm

GloriaSmud · 03/02/2012 08:04

-6 here (Leicester) just now as I cleared the car. We've had a slight covering of snow again.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/02/2012 08:15

good point wmmc - I forgot about our washing machine which we moved into the garage. I've a thermometer in there and it is -3.2C in there.

whatevertheweather - You are in the snow warning area and I can't see any change in the forecast that would reflect what the bbc said. I would expect you to get get snow for a while at least unless you are south enough in the warm sector. I need to have a proper look which will be this afternoon but personally at the moment I dont think they are correct.

have made dd wear a proper coat to school up to a balmy -7.6C here now. See you all later :)

OYBBK am reading this thread and hope I can throw in another Q - snow at heathrow. I know it's due for the weekend but will it be bad? DH job means that he has to go there when it snows heavily and we do not live near there. So I don't know if he'll be here this weekend or if he'll be stuck at heathrow ... Wondering whether to pack him an overnight bag! Grin

iseenodust · 03/02/2012 09:26

The grass has a sprinkling of dandruff here this morning (E Yorks). Car was white but it's that light stuff so all blew into car when opened doors. DS fully intends this weekend will be one of sledging. It had better dump on us Sat evening or else!

TobyLeWolef · 03/02/2012 09:34

Met Office tweeted me a personal forecast this morning after I called them lying gits because we got no snow overnight Blush

" warning for snow in Kent is later this afternoon & overnight but you may see a few flurries this morning bit.ly/aphY29 "

GloriaSmud · 03/02/2012 09:49

Oh dear Toby, best not annoy the metoffice!

MsGee ~ according to netweather, Heathrow looks like it might get some snow from 6pm tomorrow 'til about 9am Sunday. OYBBK should be able to give more detail later, she's the one who knows the charts!

Saltire · 03/02/2012 09:50

I'm in North yorks and it looks like our visitors won't be making the trip across the A66 and down the A1 tomorrow!

RebeccaMumsnet · 03/02/2012 10:28

-7 in the car this am, thanks OYBBK

teta · 03/02/2012 11:08

Too late for me with regards to insulating outside pipe.Woke up to the dc's screaming FLOOD-4 inches of water on the ground floor due in burst water pipe indoors[heating left on all night].Outdoor tap must have frozen and caused a build-up of pressure internally[pressurised water system] and consequently pipe burst with a lot of WHOOSH.

tak1ngchances · 03/02/2012 11:14

I am following @metoffice and @lucyweather on twitter but I much prefer OYBBK's forecasts and updated!!!! All hail OYBBK

DialsMavis · 03/02/2012 11:19

Oh no teta Sad AngryConfused

whomovedmychocolate · 03/02/2012 12:05

It's got warmer here - 3 only - hurrah!

Am off out to the coffee shop to celebrate.

whomovedmychocolate · 03/02/2012 12:06

Oh dear Teta - I have plumbers on site at the minute and their phones are going off constantly I think you are not alone :(

Backinthebox · 03/02/2012 12:27

Here's some VERY SPECIFIC flying weather Don't worry about what most of it means, (unless you have a thing about aviation forecasts!) These forecasts are THE LAW, and are more accurate than any other weather forecasts I have ever come across. As I fly for a living, this is a good thing, I like to know exactly what to expect when I get there. The forecasts don't go any further than about 24-36hrs as they can't predict quite so accurately beyond then, and we really need to be accurate (can't stress this enough!)

First up, Heathrow. You'll notice it doesn't give a temperature. We don't need to know that kind of thing specifically, only whether its a bit chilly or a bit toasty, and we get the current temperature in the actual weather statement. The bit we're interested in the the bit I've put in bold:

FT 031100 031104Z 0312/0418 34004KT 9999 SCT040 PROB30
0400/0412 5000 HZ PROB30 TEMPO 0410/0417 BKN012
BECMG 0412/0415 18010KT TEMPO 0417/0418 5000 -SN
BKN010
-
So what this is saying is that between 1700hrs and 1800hrs on the 4th Feb the visibility will be 5000m (5kms) in light snow with the clouds covering about half the sky at 1000ft height. I interpret this as meaning there'll be a bit of a flurry, but it's not going to stop me landing the plane. It is enough reduced visibility though that Heathrow Air Traffic Control will probably reduce the landing rate of aircraft and we all sit in the holding pattern for a while waiting for our turn to land. The wind is from the south, which is interesting, because generally with colder weather that brings sustained snow is more northerly. I'd be interested to see the synoptic charts and see where the lows and highs are over Europe, but I'm not going to get that much info till I turn up at the aircraft tonight. I'm due to land well before this time, so it's not going to worry me.

What happens on Sunday is what's worrying me - not from a professional point of view but because I am going on holiday, and I put the kiss of death on the weather every time I go on holiday! I fly every working day, and never come across airports shut due to snow. Europe, Canada, North America - never a problem. And then once ever 2 years I decide to venture out on a flight I have no control over, and bam! Snoclo.

Anyway, Gatwick for the next 36 hrs has this:

FT 031100 031104Z 0312/0418 35005KT 9999 SCT030 PROB40
0403/0411 6000 PROB30 TEMPO 0406/0412 BKN010
BECMG 0412/0415 17010KT PROB30 TEMPO 0416/0418
6000 -SN
-
This is slightly different to what Heathrow is saying. The key bit is PROB30 - this means there is only a 30% chance of it happening. We'd disregard that for planning purposes.

Hopefully I'll come back at about midnight to give you an update. I'll just be starting work then, and I'm watching Gatwick like a hawk. It better hadn't cost me the first 2 days of my holiday like it did last time!

Backinthebox · 03/02/2012 12:28

Ah, bum, the bold bit didn't work. It's the bit between the asterixes is the important bit.

headfairy · 03/02/2012 12:32

oooh, backinthebox I'll be watching your update with interest, I live 15 mins from Gatwick so whatever's happening there will be happening at our house too.

GloriaSmud · 03/02/2012 12:43

We've got an Amber Alert issued by the metoffice (I had a sneaking suspicion that with the amounts of snow being forecast, an amber one would be issued.)

MsGee · 03/02/2012 12:44

Thanks back - will keep checking your updates.

BettySuarez · 03/02/2012 12:49

Anyone know if snow forecast for Wilts/Glouc borders?
