Moving to Leeds

Thinking of moving to Leeds, saw some lovely new build houses in seacroft area...anyone know what it is like? Thanks

Also a city but much smaller and 10 min drive into leeds city centre

At 1 am maybe. I used to live in Leeds and commute to Wakefield. 10 minutes from a residential part of Wakefield to Leeds city centre in the morning rush hour is a tad optimistic.

winetime89 · 25/02/2021 22:31

seacroft isn't the nicest but it is not as bad as everyone is making out.
killingbeck has new builds, not far from seacroft this area is nice especially the ones built next to the valley, but you do have a busy toad coming out of the state. Also redrow are building new builds in colton (Ls15) next to the springs. They look lovely.

@OutOfTheDoorNow...same here, my son goes to Morley Academy, excellent school.

Nice 3 bed which is in Drighlington, not far

Or a 3 bed terrace in Morley

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 26/02/2021 06:51

No sorry it is different- and it is central seacroft so I probably would discount it.
I would consider south Leeds for better value for money ? Are schools a consideration ? It is a great city and you would be very welcome.

Turefu · 26/02/2021 06:54

Monkeytapper, thank you , 3 bed terrace looks really nice. There’s Heckmondwike Grammar School not far away, does anyone know, how they’re doing?

BikeRunSki · 26/02/2021 07:00

@Turefu

It’s a sought after school, but it’s not in Leeds. The LA for Heckmondwike is Kirklees.
Monkeytapper · 26/02/2021 07:00

@Turefu...have you name changed, I’m confused!..not sure re Heckmondwike, have a look on their website.

Maybe join a ‘friends of Seacroft’ or ‘friends of Morley/any other Leeds town etc’ Facebook group, you might get a feel of what’s going on in that area.

Monkeytapper · 26/02/2021 07:01

Where do you live at the moment?

OutOfTheDoorNow · 26/02/2021 07:39

We've got 2 people on the thread, the OP ilovebrie8 and turefu who wanted to know specifically about Morley. So this bit is for @Turefu.

Heckmondwicke Grammar does very well, I have friends whose children go there but they don't live in Leeds they live in Wakefield. Obviously your child needs to sit the entrance exam to get in. But the sixth form facilities are maybe not the best from reports of Ds's mate who chose to go there after Morley Academy which is an incredible school. But as Bike says, Heckmondwike isn't in Leeds.

Agree about joining local groups to really know what is happening in that area.

@ilovebrie8 you definitely need to consider the commute and which side you are going to come in from. It can be soul destroying even if it is for one day a week etc. So if you could give us a generic area in the city centre if you don't want to say specifically we should be able to help with that.

Turefu · 26/02/2021 08:16

I'm not OP, I joined tread later, as I'm looking to move into Leeds myself, preferably Morley. Thank you for replies, all sounds so far so very good.

Monkeytapper · 26/02/2021 08:25

@Turefu Join 'Morley Folk and surrounding areas' facebook group to get a feel for the place. Alot of 'What time does the fish and chip shop open' or 'i've just seen a man not pick up his dogs poo' etc, but am sure you get that in lost of places.

MonkeyPuddle · 26/02/2021 08:30

I really like Morley, good motorway links, train station, lovely pedestrianised shopping bit, decent schools.

Hoppinggreen · 26/02/2021 08:31

@Turefu

Outofthedoornow, thank you for your reply. Ideally, I’d like three bedrooms, but two are ok. I’d like to have a small garden too. I consider Dewsbury too, but I’m not sure about it, prefer Morley.
Don’t consider Dewsbury How about Huddersfield? Look at HD3 area near to jn24 of the M62
ilovebrie8 · 26/02/2021 10:22

sorry i am getting a bit confused as @Turefu has started asking her own questions...can you start a new thread please if you don't mind!

ilovebrie8 · 26/02/2021 10:28

thanks for all replies i am glad i started this thread as it has so much helpful info that i would just never know about ..i am going to go through the replies since last night ...this has been so helpful! as i got carried away after seeing a lovely new home in Seacroft... not realising it is not the best spot

OP posts:
Sunflowergirl1 · 26/02/2021 10:29

@Lochmorlich
"Don't live near Seacroft.

Look at Horsforth, Roundhay, Bramhope, Chapel Allerton, Headingly and Meanwood."

Good advice. A lot of inner city leeds is very deprived, high levels of violence and crime. Seacroft is terrible so don't go near there.

ilovebrie8 · 26/02/2021 10:39

@RaelImperialAerosolKid thanks for confirming that these are in central seacroft, I think i will pass then. No schools are not a consideration.

OP posts:
ilovebrie8 · 26/02/2021 10:41

@Sunflowergirl1 thanks I will look at these spots, I had no idea it was so bad in inner Leeds...i have visited a few times and loved the place, so friendly...we live down south and it is not great we want to escape!

OP posts:
ilovebrie8 · 26/02/2021 10:45

@newmummy8789 thanks for info about airport I don't want to be under a flight path at night time ...

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 26/02/2021 10:51

Avoid the Scotland Lane area of Horsforth. You can almost see the pilot's face as the planes approcah the runway.

MonkeyPuddle · 26/02/2021 10:53

Rodley is lovely.

ilovebrie8 · 26/02/2021 10:53

I didn't realise that commuting was so bad especially from north Leeds...I need to get to city centre area...am guessing I would use the bus I don't like the sound of the traffic congestion...lot to consider...

OP posts:
ilovebrie8 · 26/02/2021 11:05

So much to take in just trying to get a picture as so much helpful stuff here...so south and east Leeds are best avoided?? In a nutshell which are the nice areas to live that are ok for a bus commute into central Leeds for work...budget up to £250k for a 2 bed house with a garden, schools are not a consideration. I don't want to be under a flight path or at risk from HS2 (I'd no idea that was going through Leeds...sorry) ...thanks

OP posts:
Northernshepherd · 26/02/2021 11:14

If you look at Colton in East Leeds you can get that. Decent bus links into Leeds or even train if you were happy to walk 20mins. Very close to temple newsam which is a beautiful park with stately home if you like that sort of thing or have a dog to walk. There's a big Sainsbury's. Plus a new retail park nearby. North Leeds is posher but more expensive with weaker transport links.

ElderMillennial · 26/02/2021 11:19

I agree with above comments. There are much nicer areas of Leeds. Chapel allerton js nice and trendy. I don't know about chapel town. North Leeds is generally nice. Headlingly is known for students but nice enough. Roundhay and Oakwood are okay.

To be honest OP new houses are being built and marketed as "luxury" all over the place. It doesn't really say it's a nice area.
