How many of us are bunking off this week?

I don’t know if I’m being silly, but 39° that feels like 42° - means we aren’t going anywhere. No my children will not sit at desks, and be forced outside to ‘play’ at lunch time, with the only thing out in place is that they can wear their PE kit instead of uniforms.

My son is extremely sensitive to the sun, and allergic to sun cream - even piz buin allergy cream. He is already covered in heat rash and suffering. My daughter doesn’t have these problems but I would still like to keep her home, with our aircon and our pool with unlimited ice lollies and cool dark rooms.

I’m just wondering how many other like minded people there are out there?

Most people don't have air con and a pool in the UK though, so recognise that's a privileged position to be in. Also most of us still have to be at work so keeping children home isn't much of an option.

Momrage · 22/06/2026 19:49

Not bunking sadly, no. But barely productive. My brain feels fried in this heat. DC are at private nursery thankfully with aircon

superspideysense · 22/06/2026 19:51

Wow - goady? Wanting to show off?!

we don’t have a pool or air con!! Slumming it with a fan and Mr Freeze and have to work.

schools seem to be sensible. No forced playing as far as I can tell

WhereAreWeNow · 22/06/2026 19:53

You have a pool and air con?

CurdinHenry · 22/06/2026 19:54

I would not go to the office if I lived in the south of England and anyone who does is a fucking idiot. Those who physically have to go should get priority for a smaller number of services

mynameiscalypso · 22/06/2026 19:55

I’d much rather be in the office this week than at home.

What kind of services are we talking?

What kind of services are we talking?

Trains and buses and emergency services to rescue the inevitable breakdowns

Ihateboris · 22/06/2026 19:57

Unfortunately I'm a self employed cleaner so no bunking off for me. I do have customers with air conditioning and swimming pools though..maybe if I (beg) or ask nicely they'll let me crank the air conditioning up!

lisaloo88 · 22/06/2026 19:58

Not changing a damned thing, not really teaching resilience letting kids bunk off school when it gets a bit warm. What about when they have exams or a job in future, you just teach them it’s ok

wishfulthinking25 · 22/06/2026 19:59

I’m off after tomorrow for the rest of the week as I have to have a minor op in the evening. Debating keeping DD home from nursery too, doesn’t seem right sending her in this heat.

Its not "a bit warm"
There is a red danger to life warning
This means its not just vulnerable people at risk...its all of us

BringBackCatsEyes · 22/06/2026 20:03

Of course I’m bunking off, as well as my 17 yo. We will sit by the pool or aircon.
Oh wait…….

I’d much rather be in the office this week than at home.

I don’t work Tuesdays and if it wasn’t for having DS with me I’d go in anyway, it’s air conditioned there!

Lifeomars · 22/06/2026 20:06

Boiling away in an inner city terrace, no pool (what a surprise), no air con and no garden and no choice other than to get on with all that i have to do as do the majority of us. What concerns me is that intense heat is becoming the norm and we need to look at better ways of managing its effect on us

You have a pool and air con?

It’s a blow up pool, £25 from smyths and a rented air con unit from HSS hire. But I like the assumption everyone has jumped to. Not goading at all.

Yes, I will be staying at home, lounging by the large swimming pool and in my AC. Limitless, freshly prepared meals by my personal chef. Perhaps we will take a stroll to the stables to check on our race horse, but other than that we'll be staying at the chateau.....

Obviously, I will be going to work (but we do get to finish early due to the heat and no AC at work)

BitDrizzly · 22/06/2026 20:11

The ‘danger to life alert’ is for the elderly and vulnerable, not able bodied adults and children in the care of regulated schools. FFS, calm yourselves!

beasmithwentworth · 22/06/2026 20:16

100% in the office with the air con. I’m doing an extra day there this week for precisely this reason!

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 20:16

Red warning applies to everyone not just the vulnerable

When it was 42 degrees I had to work 12 hour shifts in a care home with no air conditioning, I had no time to think about myself as I had actual vulnerable people to look after. We were also short staffed due to staff ‘sickness’ aka it’s a nice day I don’t feel like going to work. People would literally die if we all bunked off.

The danger to life advice is basically common sense stuff like keep hydrated, close curtains, don’t drink alcohol, wear loose fitting clothes, take extra breaks etc. So yes I will have the attitude of it’s a little bit warm as I think people could grow a thicker skin when it comes to things that are a little bit more challenging than the norm.

It’s actually not though. People keep saying this but the warning specifically says it a risk to life for even healthy people, not just the elderly/vulnerable

ExquisiteDressing · 22/06/2026 20:20

We will all be going to work as usual - for my part I am grateful to work in an aircon office. I don’t think my car is particularly likely to break down but I will take iced water and sunglasses/cream with me.

I used to do care work, too
Sadly, post menopause I cannot regulate my body temperature anymore and very high temps make me quite unwell, so I'll be spending this week trying to avoid a hospital admission 🤷‍♀️

I’m in the south and I’m off into the office which has aircon. I’m not an idiot!
