How many of us are bunking off this week?

I don’t know if I’m being silly, but 39° that feels like 42° - means we aren’t going anywhere. No my children will not sit at desks, and be forced outside to ‘play’ at lunch time, with the only thing out in place is that they can wear their PE kit instead of uniforms.

My son is extremely sensitive to the sun, and allergic to sun cream - even piz buin allergy cream. He is already covered in heat rash and suffering. My daughter doesn’t have these problems but I would still like to keep her home, with our aircon and our pool with unlimited ice lollies and cool dark rooms.

I’m just wondering how many other like minded people there are out there?

I dont have the joy of " bunking off " im still on probation on a new job and already gone sick once .
I do have a pool tho and haven't been in it yet ( london ) . My grandson says its lovely and warm , obviously due to the heat
And we have a tanning pool
Air con at work thankfully

No schools here are closing , just loose clothing , P.E kit option , hat and extra water

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 22/06/2026 23:28

I am retired, every day is a bunk off day to me. We have swimming lakes nearby. I might go for an outdoor swim tomorrow.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/06/2026 21:58

Most people drive to work. Or WFH. What’s their excuse for “bunking off”?

As it happens I do walk to work. I plan to go in early tomorrow so avoid the worst of the heat. “Fucking idiot” that I am.

Edited

I don’t walk to work but I’m still better off driving in my air conditioned car to the station to catch an air conditioned train to go to an air conditioned office than sitting in my flat which is currently doubling as a sauna so goodness knows how hot it will be on Wednesday / Thursday.

That poster seems somewhat overdramatic. Perhaps it’s the heat?

Thunderstormsandsunshine · 22/06/2026 23:34

No air con at my school (teacher). And open and normal lessons Wednesday and Thursday. My room was 32 today that’s in the shade with fans going the Headteacher had said we are staying open but not to expect the children to do any work at all.

My sons secondary school shut on Wednesday and Thursday and all trips cancelled.

If you were my cleaner (if I had one!!) I’d absolutely do that while you were cleaning and let you have a dip in my pool - again if I had one!
people with this must be in the minority tho!

Awwww...that's so kind 💌

saraclara · 23/06/2026 00:00

I was a student working in the glass walled kitchen of a printing factory canteen as a holiday job, during the 1976 heatwave. I was naked under my nylon uniform overall. I couldn't have picked a worse job for that weather. I'd get home and shower for as long as my parents would let me.

Solidarity with anyone working in a kitchen this week.

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 20:00

Its not "a bit warm"
There is a red danger to life warning
This means its not just vulnerable people at risk...its all of us

Don't be so dramatic!!!

SquirrelGG · 23/06/2026 04:40

BuffaloCauliflower · 22/06/2026 20:19

It’s actually not though. People keep saying this but the warning specifically says it a risk to life for even healthy people, not just the elderly/vulnerable

Edited

Only if they behave like absolute idiots! Honestly, I despair of people. It gets as hotter, and even hotter, in other countries and people deal with it by taking sensible precautions.

50NotFat · 23/06/2026 05:50

If I bunk off I don’t get paid. Anyway, the aircon in work is fab so would actually rather be there.

What is a virtual ward?

https://www.england.nhs.uk/virtual-wards/

It is a way of keeping people out of hospital and treating them at home. We work with medical consultants just like if a person were on a ward - we treat very sick people in their own homes. It is a wonderful job.

Erm, yes they do.

No - Mondeo Man from the 80s and you do. That's not "most people". Most workers in the UK work in London for a start.

Most workers work in London? That's so clearly wrong, that I honestly don't know where to start.

Also I've already shared the government statistics on how people get to work.

I'm genuinely bemused by your posts. Not one of them makes any sense at all.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 23/06/2026 10:04

No, I'll be in a kitchen with three gas ovens, a steamer, a hot plate and an open steriliser. And a deep fat fryer on Friday.
Can't have time off because there's only two of us there in the first place.

OriginalSkang · 23/06/2026 10:08

I'm going to stay at work where there is air con! DD does online school at her dads this week and will have a fan and. And a frame pool for her breaks

Hopefully your pool is inside, otherwise the children will become even more burned, because of water reflection.

Happytrucker1982 · 23/06/2026 10:15

Currently on holiday but if I wasn’t I’d be a slogging away at my physically demanding job as usual because the heat doesn’t change what my customers need. Let’s hope people who work for our emergency services don’t decide to bunk off as well.

Erm, no they don't! How utterly ridiculous. Not everyone lives / works in London you know. Have you not seen the stats posted upthread? Here's the link if you CBA.

63% of commuting journeys were by private transport.

And as it happens, I walk to work so that assumption was wrong too.

autumn1610 · 23/06/2026 10:21

Until I popped onto mumsnet today I didn’t even think about not going about my normal day to day. I have a meeting 3hours away (south the horror) and hadn’t even contemplated not going. Now I’m questioning if I’m too chill and should be suggesting we rearrange or if people are over the top. I’ve chosen not to WFH this week so I can sit in the air conditioned office

MarjorieWestriding · 23/06/2026 10:22

CanOnlyBeMyself · 22/06/2026 22:59

I’m a fair-skinned professional gardener so will be working 5-8am each day this week and that’ll be it. Indoors with the curtains closed for the rest of it drawing out planting designs. I’ll lose money but I’d rather that than have sun stroke.

Same here and I'm also in my 60s. I've told my customers I won't be there during the hot weather and they're all very understanding. I worked yesterday afternoon and was dripping just standing and deadheading a rose. Felt like I was about to pass out, so I'm saying 'No'.

Floppyearedlab · 23/06/2026 10:30

Yep. We work so kids will be in.

Our school sent an email out outlining the measures they have taken and they have done their best. They also said all absence this week will require a doctor’s note or someone from the school coming round to verify that the child is ill, to mitigate temptation, as there are still 3 weeks to go until the holidays.

Swissmeringue · 23/06/2026 10:36

Me and the 3 year old are bunking off, we also have air con and a big paddling pool, it's boiling in preschool so I'm gonna keep him home Wednesday/Thursday. 7 year old will be going to school but school has an outdoor pool that she'll be in with all her friends for at least an hour so she'd never forgive me if I kept her home!

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I could have looked it up really (blame the heat?!).
Preventative medicine 👍

Friendlygingercat · 23/06/2026 11:31

Im 81 and still running two businesses from home so wont be "bunking off". Customers still want their parcels delivered and my postgrad students still need to be tutored. I have one taking her viva soon so am supporting her through that. Another is writing up so I am proofreading their draft. Both have English as a second language. Of course the £££ is useful too. Fortunately this is all online so Im sitting here with a very large fan and very few clothes on.

CanOnlyBeMyself · 23/06/2026 17:23

@MarjorieWestriding It’s so hard turning down work isn’t it? Definitely not worth pushing it though and the roses can wait. I hope you feel ok now? I ended up starting at 6am today and finished at 11.30 when it began to feel too hot in the shade. I might try the 6-8am slot tomorrow and Thursday but that’ll be it! The rest of the time it’s sitting indoors, fan on, with a wet muslin around my neck and a frozen hot water bottle on my knee. The gardens will all still be there when it cools down again. Take care x

MarjorieWestriding · 23/06/2026 17:46

@CanOnlyBeMyself yes, thank you, it's much better at home with the curtains drawn and all the rest of the carry on we turn to in hot weather. The wet cloth round your neck is a real game changer, isn't it! I did that for our postie a few years ago when she appeared at the door sweating and red in the face and her 'Ooooh' in reaction showed exactly how she felt about it too. I never liked that tea towel anyway 😅

The people I work for are mostly older and don't want anyone there before 10am so I'm taking my cue from them and just not working for the rest of the week. The gardens can wait. DH was in a garden earlier and said it was 32C in deep shade!
