How many of us are bunking off this week?

I don’t know if I’m being silly, but 39° that feels like 42° - means we aren’t going anywhere. No my children will not sit at desks, and be forced outside to ‘play’ at lunch time, with the only thing out in place is that they can wear their PE kit instead of uniforms.

My son is extremely sensitive to the sun, and allergic to sun cream - even piz buin allergy cream. He is already covered in heat rash and suffering. My daughter doesn’t have these problems but I would still like to keep her home, with our aircon and our pool with unlimited ice lollies and cool dark rooms.

I’m just wondering how many other like minded people there are out there?

There will always be people who say just get on with it and its "just summer".

The fact is you can get heatstroke by just sitting in a too hot environment. You don't always know who's susceptible to it until it happens. Yes certain groups are more at risk but "healthy" people can get it too. Given the damage it can cause, including death, it's not something I take chances with.

I know for a fact I struggle to get my core temperature down when I overheat. Its always been an issue for me but even more so since menopause. I will not be leaving my house (I also have portable air con).

MN is not a fountain of medical knowledge. I remember when I was quitting drinking I checked out the alcohol boards and it was full of people telling others to go cold turkey, even though that's extremely dangerous and can lead to severe brain damage and death. There were a few sensible posters but they were in a minority.

I go to the office - in south east England - because it had aircon. My home doesn’t. Sorry if that makes me a “fucking idiot”. Though your post was fucking rude

OP I’m sure you’re not but your post makes you sound like a knob.

Unless you can walk there then it does, sorry.

havingoneofthosedays · 22/06/2026 21:46

Think I might just bunk off, hehe
Those patients on my clinic list won’t mind if we postpone the surgery hehe
Silly silly me hehe
We are just so like minded

Oh yes because walking in 35 degree heat is so much safer than driving in a car with aircon.

It’s not that hard to call in sick. It’s just a job I’d never put a job or school before my family. Also an air con unit is a couple of hundred quid why are people being bitter and need a full breakdown because they can’t help their ugliness and would rather jump to conclusions. I knew exactly that she meant a paddling pool and an air con unit but jealous people can’t see that and accuse her of being goady. It’s such an ugly trait

Thank you, I wish I had the million pound house half these people think I have 😅

I also said nothing about me bunking off either, I said my children will be. Fortunately, I can work from home if necessary - however I am currently recovering from an op.

I’ll probably never post again, after seeing how quickly people jump to conclusions and attack. A message for those people - it is ok for some of us to be cautious in the heat for various reasons and to not want to run the risk. A red weather warning is a red weather warning, if it was a red warning for high winds/storms etc I would react the exact same way and stay home. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Most people drive to work. Or WFH. What’s their excuse for “bunking off”?

As it happens I do walk to work. I plan to go in early tomorrow so avoid the worst of the heat. “Fucking idiot” that I am.

How long will your air conditioning last if your car breaks down or you get stuck in a line of traffic because another car did?

CurdinHenry · 22/06/2026 21:59

Most people definitely don't drive btw - most people couldn't park near work

FairViewRosie25 · 22/06/2026 22:03

Quite pleased to be doing a consultancy day on Wednesday in an air conditioned office

TheChosenTwo · 22/06/2026 22:05

Well I sat through a work webinar in my garden today (I had headphones on, don’t worry) instead of at my desk so that felt a bit skivey even though I was concentrating. On my sun lounger with an ice cream.
Other than that, it’s business as usual although ds is finishing earlier from school this week. He’s a teen at senior school so will sort himself out.

I can only assume that you live in on London or another big city. Because this is what the ONS comes up with (of course the remaining percentage is people who WFH)

Do you normally catastrophise? Air conditioning still works even if your car is at a standstill.

Figgygal · 22/06/2026 22:08

Nope continuing to work but WFH as office has no air conditioning
Kids still not sure eldest at secondary and they're closing lunch time
Youngest at primary and no update yet
They'll be having film afternoons or documentaries while we both work

It doesn't when your battery dies.

The whole point of a RED warning is that you are being instructed to prepare for catastrophe. Remember when the beast from the east (also red) shut down all transport for days and trapped people on motorways and trains all over the country?

The chances of your battery dying when you're actually on a journey are... infinitesimal? Can that even happen? They drain when left overnight, generally, and mostly on extremely cold weather.

It's absolutely ridiculous to say that no-one should drive to work tomorrow in case their battery dies mid-journey.

Tomorrow isn't red, Thursday is.No one should travel unless it is genuinely essential

If you do, hell mend you

Hottiiieee · 22/06/2026 22:20

Well I could bunk off but that would leave 34 elderly people without their medication, dressings. The person on the night shift would not be allowed to leave the building…so not an option for me or my colleagues!

Besidemyselfwithworry · 22/06/2026 22:26

Ihateboris · 22/06/2026 19:57

Unfortunately I'm a self employed cleaner so no bunking off for me. I do have customers with air conditioning and swimming pools though..maybe if I (beg) or ask nicely they'll let me crank the air conditioning up!

If you were my cleaner (if I had one!!) I’d absolutely do that while you were cleaning and let you have a dip in my pool - again if I had one!
people with this must be in the minority tho!

ExquisiteDressing · 22/06/2026 22:29

Most people certainly do drive to work round here, public transport is shit and not many live within walking distance of work. I’ll take my chance on the car aircon not breaking down, if it does I have windows, if I’m stuck in traffic I know all the alternative routes having done the same commute for 10 years. Mostly it’s dual carriageway so one broken down car doesn’t block it.

LittleRobins · 22/06/2026 22:46

The media have a lot to answer for causing so much panic in clearly anxious, vulnerable people. Just be sensible, look after yourself, keep an eye on others around you and carry on. Christ on a bike, what ever happened to British resilience?

CanOnlyBeMyself · 22/06/2026 22:59

I’m a fair-skinned professional gardener so will be working 5-8am each day this week and that’ll be it. Indoors with the curtains closed for the rest of it drawing out planting designs. I’ll lose money but I’d rather that than have sun stroke.

CaesarAugusta · 22/06/2026 23:12

I find in this sort of weather I am manage pretty well if I work in minimal clothing with a fan trained on me all day, and a good supply of cold water to hand.

I just have to pray that I don't need to stand up during online meetings, otherwise people will find out the hard way that I'm sitting there wearing only a T-shirt and knickers.

toastandegg · 22/06/2026 23:18

I saw 3 broken down vehicles on a 15 minute journey this evening so if you do need to travel remember water, mobile and a hat or umbrella- our area have been warned of public travel delays and cancellations being likely over the next few days. Lots of people need to go to work but if you have the option of wfh or keeping you dc off I would - very little learning will stick this week but appreciate some dc need to be in so parents can work - less bodies in the classroom or office will help

Swimbea · 22/06/2026 23:21

lisaloo88 · 22/06/2026 19:58

Not changing a damned thing, not really teaching resilience letting kids bunk off school when it gets a bit warm. What about when they have exams or a job in future, you just teach them it’s ok

Yep totally agree. Life's all about being miserable and suffering, get them used to it early 👍🏻
