How many of us are bunking off this week?

MyWildOliveGoose · 22/06/2026 19:39

I don’t know if I’m being silly, but 39° that feels like 42° - means we aren’t going anywhere. No my children will not sit at desks, and be forced outside to ‘play’ at lunch time, with the only thing out in place is that they can wear their PE kit instead of uniforms.

My son is extremely sensitive to the sun, and allergic to sun cream - even piz buin allergy cream. He is already covered in heat rash and suffering. My daughter doesn’t have these problems but I would still like to keep her home, with our aircon and our pool with unlimited ice lollies and cool dark rooms.

I’m just wondering how many other like minded people there are out there?

OP posts:

It’s actually not though. People keep saying this but the warning specifically says it a risk to life for even healthy people, not just the elderly/vulnerable

How though?

I would not go to the office if I lived in the south of England and anyone who does is a fucking idiot. Those who physically have to go should get priority for a smaller number of services

I go to the office - in south east England - because it had aircon. My home doesn’t. Sorry if that makes me a “fucking idiot”. Though your post was fucking rude

OP I’m sure you’re not but your post makes you sound like a knob.

Raven08 · 22/06/2026 20:23

It's not "a bit more challenging" ffs
People have died in France and no doubt there will be an increase in unexpected deaths here, too.
Contrary to popular opinion, plenty of people with no previous health issues can die in heatwaves.
And that isn't including the deaths in water that always happen in heatwaves.

Ibi · 22/06/2026 20:23

My children aren’t forced to play outside - what sort of school do you send them to? Our office has air conditioning and the children are allowed to wear what they want. They’re having a great time at the moment and lots to look forward to like a teddy bear picnic

saraclara · 22/06/2026 20:27

I'm retired, but I'm heading to my voluntary job tomorrow morning, because the office I work in is air conditioned!

Seriously, I don't understand why people are talking about not going to work. Life has to go on, and anyone who can get away with not working (without letting people down) is very privileged, and shouldn't be calling those who need to work, stupid.

basingstokebluesfortwos · 22/06/2026 20:30

Posters jumping on the op because she’s got a paddling pool and rented air con unit. You lot wanna get a grip!

RaininSummer · 22/06/2026 20:30

It wouldn't go down at all well in my civil service office if we said we were not going to work this week. Not sure what sort of jobs people who can 'bunk off' have where it doesn't matter if you show up.

The ‘danger to life alert’ is for the elderly and vulnerable, not able bodied adults and children in the care of regulated schools. FFS, calm yourselves!

No.It.Isn’t.

Red warning applies to everyone not just the vulnerable
Hth

Was about to say the same.

Bananarice · 22/06/2026 20:40

I took the day off, only coincidentally. Ds1 has a hospital appointment in the afternoon. That is what annual leave is for. Majority of my dc classrooms have air-conditioning, this year. Those special ac ks2 rooms are finally available to a dc of mine.

Only the oldest dc doesn't have classroom with ac, but he will only do half day. I'm not looking forward to picking him up and travelling to his appointment, via public transport. Our home doesn't have ac, so the dc will still attend their clubs if they are open.

Well it was a drip feed wasn’t it! Written that way to stir us all up 😂

GimmieABreakOr3 · 22/06/2026 20:44

I’m looking forward to going to the office on Thursday as it has air conditioning….

OP, most people don’t have pools or air cons, so you’re coming across very goady

Well they are if they’re calling people who have to work fucking idiots!!

most of us don’t have a choice unless we book annual leave and a lot have jobs where people rely on us.

😂😂 of course

Beyondamountainandoverthesea · 22/06/2026 21:02

I work as a Community Nurse for a virtual ward and urgent community response service, if we all 'bunked off' what do you think would happen to all of those people who needed treatment (falls, end of life patients etc). Yes it is going to be hellish getting in and out of my car for a 13 hr shift but bunking off does not even come into my thoughts.

It wasn't just that, but the ease at which she can decide (or not) to keep her children home. Mine are older now, but it's not that long ago that I was in the depths of juggling working full time as a lone parent.
An unscheduled day off would just add to the pressure even though of course you know it's the right thing.

What is a virtual ward?

Onarockinthesea · 22/06/2026 21:06

The Channel Islands advice is far more level headed with less scaremongering.

Honestly, I don’t know if MN makes people anxious or whether this is where the anxious hang out to try to outdo each other 🙄

‘We know that many islanders are used to managing hot weather, however there are vulnerable members of our community who may be taken by surprise by quite how hot it is or require extra support in this weather. If you have someone in your life who may find this hot spell difficult – a loved one or neighbour perhaps – then it’s always worth just quickly checking on them as temperatures over the next couple of days are going to reach extreme levels for this time of year.

The general public health advice remains:

👥 Check in on people who may be at risk.
🚰 Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated – water is best.
☀ Regularly apply sun cream when outside, cover up with cool clothing and a hat.
🌡 Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which include heavy sweating, elevated body temperature, dizziness, fainting and nausea.
🏠 Keep your home cool by allowing air inside, and closing curtains or blinds on windows that face the sun.
⛹️‍♀️ Plan physical activity for the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or later in the evening.

Also, please help your pets to stay cool and keep them out of the heat wherever possible (particularly when walking dogs).

The hot weather is nothing to be alarmed about, but it can start to pose health risks if you don't stay hydrated.

Visit gov.gg/weather to stay up to date with the forecast.’

Never mind, just seen the OPs other post. Might have wanted to have made that clearer in her first post.

AlwaysRightISwear · 22/06/2026 21:11

Definitely going to work as it has lovely AC and my flat is hotter than outdoors.

I think some people have different work ethics and perhaps linked to their roles.

what really irks me is seeing all this about bunking off because of the heat and then the beaches are rammed!!!!

RelievedNoYouTubeMum · 22/06/2026 21:15

It wouldn't even cross my mind to bunk off or not send my kids to school. I am a Midwife and if we all bunked off, what would the women and their babies do? The hospital is always much hotter than the outside temperature and so it is very hard for all involved.

School do their best to keep kids cool, hydrated and out of the sun. They may as well be there than bored at home.

It’s not that hard to call in sick. It’s just a job I’d never put a job or school before my family. Also an air con unit is a couple of hundred quid why are people being bitter and need a full breakdown because they can’t help their ugliness and would rather jump to conclusions. I knew exactly that she meant a paddling pool and an air con unit but jealous people can’t see that and accuse her of being goady. It’s such an ugly trait

Hiddenmnetter · 22/06/2026 21:19

It’s a bit mad. I grew up in Sydney and would regularly go to school with 35+ days, obviously the teachers and everything would slow down when it really spiked, but if everyone bunked off when it was a 35 degree week Sydney would shut down for 2-3 months/year.

you make do. Drink lots of water, stay in the shade, fan yourself. This is before the “everyone brings a water bottle to school” as well, so most people just used the water fountains. I remember walking across the road and the tarmac sticking to my feet. My mum tells stories of only being allowed home from school once it reached 50. But she grew up in the outback, so you had to be made of stern stuff.

Honestly it’s fine, don’t be stupid, slip slop slap, drink water and crack the fuck on. Can’t stop living just cause it’s a lovely day.
