You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

In the other staffroom, there is rhubarb & ginger gin, along with tea and coffee.

I doubt Gove has read the guidelines. He thinks this is schools back to social distanced 50s rigour. He might well not want us to clean.

TheHoneyBadger · 19/05/2020 16:27

Have just read key stage summaries and schemes that maths teachers here kindly shared with me and the work ds is being set, and level it’s at does seem a bit above and beyond. Might go back to my original plan of consolidating what he should know by the end of year 8 rather than doing the stuff being set? Sorry parent hat on briefly.

ChloeDecker · 19/05/2020 16:29

I have a bruise on my forehead where I have been banging my head against a brick wall with our nautical friend.
On a brighter not, I have finished my electronic ‘marking’ for the day!
Hello sunshine!

Cantaloupeisland · 19/05/2020 16:41

That stuff about county lines gangs is hilarious - because unscrupulous drug barons recruiting kids only work during school hours, term time only

SansaSnark · 19/05/2020 16:53

I haven't seen the county lines stuff, but surely they must realise that the children who are most vulnerable to getting involved in that sort of thing are also the ones who regularly skive? If anything, the risk is surely reduced at the moment because there's less ability for teenagers to travel around on public transport and the police can more easily break up groups in parks etc.

I know that's an overly simplistic view, but I'm not sure schools being open/closed has a huge bearing on that sort of thing. I know the pastoral team are aware of the children at risk of that sort of thing and are checking up on them as much as possible.

Re rotas/part time opening, I thought the advice was mainly against teachers being involved in more than one bubble - I thought rotas/part time where you only ever see the same children (e.g. due to space) are ok? So, actually, an afternoon's closure due to PPA is ok, but having someone cover the class who isn't usually with them isn't?

pinkrocker · 19/05/2020 16:53

@Saucery I use it anyway, after the cleaner's gone!
grass pigeons how much you want for it? Wink

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2020 17:02

If you recall this was also the reason why we are never to exclude children. Because then the police and social care have to intervene.

TheHoneyBadger · 19/05/2020 17:06

I just found cgp ks3 workbook and the complete revision and practice guide on top of a wardrobe! I now remember being very on it when ds was at the end of yr6 and buying them in readiness for the next year. That was back when I was doing supply and had the headspace to think about my own child’s education.

I remember a couple of maths teachers recommending them to me when I asked for help on here last week so I feel confident about using them as a decent resource. Thanks again those who pm’d and emailed me

TheHoneyBadger · 19/05/2020 17:09

Seem to recall a drop in gang activity being reported in early lockdown as they would be too visible on the streets and that cuckooing had stopped in case neighbours reported people coming and going when meant to be social distancing. So agree this is yet more bs and appropriation of concern

TheHoneyBadger · 19/05/2020 17:11

(I had to look up what cuckooing was last year when it was mentioned in a staff briefing and none of my colleagues knew what it was)

MsAwesomeDragon · 19/05/2020 17:13

honey unless your ds is pretty talented at maths I think you'd be best off doing the year 8 curriculum and really consolidating it. Quadratic ranges (I'm not familiar with that term, although I'm sure I'd recognise the maths) do not seem to be within the remit of a year 8 pupil.

NeurotrashWarrior · 19/05/2020 17:14

I think there's some confusion over rotas; the ones I know of the staff are in for one week and off the next but only ever with one bubble and so only ever in contact with those children, which is what's been happening so far. Not a rota across the week in different bubbles. And yes the only children who might not get at least one shorter day are the KWs. I think some schools are defining a KW group separately to the rest, some are giving the parents the choice eg a child in y6 who may want to see their friends.

NeurotrashWarrior · 19/05/2020 17:14

But the have you stick to the bubble they choose.

SleepymummyZzz · 19/05/2020 17:34

Ouch! Anyone watching the briefing and noticed Angela McClean’s very frosty response to the ITV reporters very sensible questions about schools! Am I the only one sensing fractions starting to develop between the scientists and the government ministers? You can guarantee there will be some blame throwing once this is all over!

RigaBalsam · 19/05/2020 17:34

Angela Mclean is rattled today.

RigaBalsam · 19/05/2020 17:35

Cross post yes. She is strong in the test, track and trace.

TheHoneyBadger · 19/05/2020 17:36

He’s in set 2 msDragon Confused so no not particularly talented. I’d rather he had a really solid grasp on ks3 than mixed message wobbly understanding of ks4 thanks to my shite attempt at explaining new ground.

Ks3 is compressed into yr 7 and 8 in science at my school so presuming maths is the same so consolidating def seems the right way to go.

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2020 17:37

I read a fun stat today. Guess what else Danish teenagers are busy being better at than our kids?

Binge drinking. Hooray for Denmark. Let's copy!

Appuskidu · 19/05/2020 17:38

That briefing made me so cross.

The reply to a good question about schools was, well Denmark are doing it so it must be fine, and we should look to ‘the wonderful nhs’ and shops who have ACTUALLY been working throughout and get back out there. I could have screamed, ‘well, so have we!’. He then talked about how Year 1 and 6 were going back as they were such important years but didn’t even mention reception at all!

The crap woman there-no idea who she was-said they were waiting for more data to come out on Thursday re schools. Any idea what that is?

Apparently MPs are now going on their half term for two weeks!!!

RigaBalsam · 19/05/2020 17:40

Appu I was also screaming at Eustace.

Awkward briefing from Angela. She isn't happy.

RigaBalsam · 19/05/2020 17:41

Appu I think its about the test track trace.

Appuskidu · 19/05/2020 17:42

She looked really pissed off. Do we think she is unhappy about schools going back or just sick of those briefings?

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2020 17:43

The awaited data in Thursday is about tracking, I think.

Surely Mps are working through half term??

I am glad I switched the briefing off in time!

Piggywaspushed · 19/05/2020 17:44

Any one see death figures today? Quite high....
