Why is the Coronation going to cost £100 million?

I do not understand how a ceremony in a cathedral is going to cost this much. We know how much roughly security cost for past Royal weddings so this is not the answer. The estimated cost for William and Kate's wedding with a big reception and evening do was £30 million, includi9ng security. How does a ceremony in a cathedral plus security cost £70 million more than a wedding?

I guess things are firstly more expensive than 10 years ago- but also I suspect that isn’t an entirely accurate figure. At least I hope not, so many better uses of that money.
I am totally disenfranchised from the royal family, I could get quite angry when I think of the cost of them. I read a story yesterday in mylondon newspaper, they are asking for volunteers to litter pick the streets of London. I think that’s outrageous

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 09:43

That is outrageous that they are asking volunteers to litter pick. Bloody cheek.

The figure I saw was £40 million, much of which is on security but not necessarily an extra cost. Some of the bill will be met by the royal family anyway. Tv rights sold overseas will off set the costs to broadcast it etc. the cost is one thing but it will produce an income too

Disgraceful when people are freezing and starving.

HereComesMaleficent · 24/01/2023 09:53

Don't forget for a more dramatic effect they often calculate in the day rate for military personnel. But you'd be paying them their day rate either way, if they were marching in a procession or sitting on camp playing play station between briefings 🤣

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 09:55

The Operation Golden Orb committee, which plans the ceremony, estimates that even a slimmed-down coronation could cost around £100million.
And taxpayers pay for it all. The Royal Family pay for nothing.
This will in real terms be a much more expensive Coronation than the Queen had.

A huge amount of that will be security, as previous posters have said

Phos · 24/01/2023 10:00

The highest figure I've seen quoted is £100m. Not sure where you're getting a billion from. A lot of it is security but worldwide TV rights will more than cover the cost anyway.

Poppingboba · 24/01/2023 10:00

In 2023, ALL the royals are earning and spending like crazy while the ordinary people go cold and hungry. Their stories of their rifts and scandals make us forget that it is in ALL their interests to make sure the monarchy goes on forever.

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 10:01

@Phos 100 million is 1 billion. I think 100 million is being used to make it seem like less than a billion.

I thought as much.

1 billion is 1000 million.

Fleur405 · 24/01/2023 10:03

I billion is a thousand million.

Planta · 24/01/2023 10:03

1000 million is a billion!

it’s totalling up the costs of everyone working that day as well who would be paid anyway as a pp says. So the police officers, the forces personnel Etc.

Heartstopper · 24/01/2023 10:04

It does seem a lot but how much do you suppose a presidential inauguration would cost and that would be a regular event as opposed to this being the first of it's kind for 70 years.

Poppingboba · 24/01/2023 10:05

I love the fact that I will see a live coronation. I only wish it was not them two.

Furrybootstoday · 24/01/2023 10:06

You're talking crap. It doesn't cost that much. It will bring loads of overseas revenue and publicity for UK in a good way.

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 10:07

Taxpayers are paying for the Coronation.
Does the monies from the TV rights to film the Coronation go to the Royal Family or the government?
And will TV rights really bring in at least £100 million? It is not as if filming will be sold off to the highest bidder. It will go to the BBC and they will not be paying anything like this amount. £100 million is more than Sky paid for TV rights to 4 World Cups in football.

Are you going to ask mn to correct your mistake? 1 billion is not 100 million, some posters may believe your inaccurate post .

Well there have been plenty others recently. Felipe of Spain, Willem Alexander of the Netherlands, Albert of Monaco. The Scandinavian monarchs are all knocking on, there'll be another one soon.

Taxpayers aren’t paying for the Coronation. It’s being paid for by sponsorships, selling off rights, donations by businesses/celebrities/RF and the Crown Estate. The Crown Estate isn’t funded by any of our taxes at all.

Deadringer · 24/01/2023 10:11

They should have it down the pub. Much cheaper.

I meant, a UK one. It is interesting, I will enjoy the downtime when it comes around but it feels wrong for several reasons.

The cost of a Presidential inauguration is about $1 million.

The Coronation will cost way more than 100 Presidential inaugurations.
