Why is the Coronation going to cost £100 million?

I do not understand how a ceremony in a cathedral is going to cost this much. We know how much roughly security cost for past Royal weddings so this is not the answer. The estimated cost for William and Kate's wedding with a big reception and evening do was £30 million, includi9ng security. How does a ceremony in a cathedral plus security cost £70 million more than a wedding?

@Coxspurplepippin

I don't care what the Windsors do once gone - I'm sure they will be extremely rich
They can pay an expensive lawyer to minimise their taxes / do whatever the ithe rich do

It get them away from public money and democratic processes

What democratic process are they involved in and exert any kind of influence or power?

They change laws all the time to benefit themselves as you well know.

@Novella4 I was regurgitating what I saw several constitutional lawyers said on a program I was watched a while ago around the subject of what RF owned and powers they had. I think it was more than just the crown estate being discussed - covering some possessions and paintings but not clear on that one but it wasn't considered unsurmountable as there would be negotiations but wasn't as straight forwards as some were suggesting.

I could easily get behind a new system - but frankly I'd want to know what they new system was and probably in some detail - though any system has flaws.

That's the main reason why I voted remain - not a real love of EU as could see pro and cons - but a lack of clarity about what came next which frankly I think I was right about. Too many people misrepresenting the situation wafting figures plucked form the air about and skipping over the next bits and airily arm waving over the many foreseeable problems.

We have a monarchy that comes with coronation - and that has a bill attached - mainly security seem churlish to bitch about that especially when we've been spared an event and cost for over 70 years.

If there starts to be some political will advocating change and new system with no RF frankly I'd be looking and depending on proposal included inclined to vote for it.

The Crown and it's estate is vastly wealthy.

The Crown and estate generate wealth, they hand all this over to the government in turn for 25% back as "The sovereign Grant"

You will have seen The King proclaim this in his proclamation if you watched it and listened.

Seen as multi billion pound windfarms have been built on The Crown Estate recently you are about to see over the years a "windfall" (pardon the pun) hit the books.

King Charles has specifically asked that this income (from the windfarms) be directed to the people. He has also requested a reduction from the 25% due to the cost of living crisis. Weather they (the government) allow it is another thing.

This proposed £100million pound bill could easily be paid off in a week if they flogged some paintings 🤣

They literally own through inheritance for hundreds of years capital of eye watering billions. They aren't building new palaces, mining new jewels and painting new masterpieces, they have inherited it all.

What are they supposed to do? Sell off their inheritance? Would you?

People can't help the families they are born to, people will always be richer than you. That's life.

@00100001 you could send OP 20p, she'll never notice the difference a decimal place makes.

20p, £20 billion. It's all the same to the op. 😄😄

Operation Golden Orb committee, which plans the ceremony, said costs could run to more than £100 million. I think they should understand the costs if anyone does.

The 2012 Olympics cost £15 billion. Were you whinging then?

And weren’t the Gamesmakers all volunteers as well? And people volunteered to help at the Commonwealth games last year. So what’s wrong with asking people to volunteer to help at the Coronation?

The US isn't the only alternative on offer here though is it...
There's over 150 other countries in the world that don't have a monarchy. I'm pretty sure they don't have presidency inaugurations that cost the eye-watering amounts the US have so pretty moot point.
