Why is the Coronation going to cost £100 million?

I do not understand how a ceremony in a cathedral is going to cost this much. We know how much roughly security cost for past Royal weddings so this is not the answer. The estimated cost for William and Kate's wedding with a big reception and evening do was £30 million, includi9ng security. How does a ceremony in a cathedral plus security cost £70 million more than a wedding?

title amended by MNHQ at OP's request.

It is so funded. The Grant paid for it and selling the TV rights etc will more than pay for it

TV rights monies go to Royalty not the government.

I have no problem with a coronation ceremony/celebration, it has to be done to show they mean something, but what do they mean anyway?

They mean 💓💗💕💞 luurve. And 🤴👸 and 👑and 🏰 and 🥳🎉 and 🌞 and lurve. 🥰

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 24/01/2023 14:32

I tell you what OP give me your address and I will send you the 2 quid it will have cost you. How about that? Then at least you can say it didn't cost you anything.

I love a royal occasion. It showcases the UK and what we do well.

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 14:48

@00100001 Okay send me the £2.

Not for official Crown occasions.

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 14:53

@Onnabugeisha Do you have a link confirming that?

@MargaritaRita

the king/queen is the head of state of the UK and still numerous other countries. Thats what they mean.

I’m no great royalist but that is the constitutional position. The last of head of state has died, we have a new one. Presidents get sworn in and take oaths, the king/queen does the same. They just have a crown and a few tiaras thrown in.
Given the quality of our politcal ‘leaders’ at the moment, I’ll stick with Charles for now.

the constant griping about the cost is just boring. I’m sure the total costs of all the US presidential inaugerations since 1953 is more than £100m.

Ted27 · 24/01/2023 15:00

@AttentionAll

do you have a link which confirms that TV monies go to the Royal family

The 2017 US inauguration cost between $175m - $200m. The op already provided a link to that. Even though they then misreported it to say it only cost $1m. Figures are not the op's strongest suit.

.... Why are you still going on?

A small percentage of the rights go to the royal family, yes. As it's them "starring in the show".... What's your point?

Even if they got 100%, so what?

Furrybootstoday · 24/01/2023 15:06

00100001 · 24/01/2023 10:29

So what if it "costs" £100 million?

Think of all the extra people who will be in the UK, spending their money in people's shops, cafes, hotels, museums, tourist attractions, taxis, buses, restaurants, markets, street food stalls, local businesses etc and going "Wow, Britain is amazing, I'm coming back with my friends next year"

Totally agree 👍

Ted27 · 24/01/2023 15:12

what I don’t understand here is people who think the Coronation is just about Charles deciding to have a bit of a knees up.

It is a state event, just the same as a presidential inaugaration.
@MarshaMelrose absolutley figures are not the Ops strong point. The point I was making is that the last time the UK did this was 1953, if the monarchy survives that long, it may not be done again for 20 years. State with presidents do this every four years

AdventFridgeOfShame · 24/01/2023 15:17

@00100001 you could send OP 20p, she'll never notice the difference a decimal place makes.

Reading financially literate users argue about the cost of the royals is always amusing. Maybe we should offer these people the chance to pay tax at the same rate as the royals.

@AttentionAll Would you be happy to pay 75% tax? No personal allowance at all.

She'll post a link, just as soon as you post a link confirming the £100 million...

AdventFridgeOfShame · 24/01/2023 15:19

Sorry the 20p was at @OhhhhhhhhBiscuits

@00100001 Okay send me the £2.

If you're so aggrieved that the government at spunking "£100millon" you're obviously doing absolutely everything you can to help those the government ate ignoring. So, how about you send all of your spare money to a foodbank/homeless shelter/ local hospice etc. Every month and then let me know who you supported and I'll give them the £2.

Indeed the money would just get converted to fund a president and their housing/security/team.

Many of the houses and estates would be sold off to private people and organisations, and any profit will just sit in the government coffers for them to do silly things with.

Exchanging Monarchs for presidents doesn't equate more money for the plebs. Never has, never will.

Surely it would cost tax payers more/we'd be worse off?

If the RF were demoted to just massive landowners, they wouldn't feel compelled to hand over most of its private income to the government and would just pay "normal" income tax, which wouldn't be anywhere near the amount given in the grant?

upinaballoon · 24/01/2023 15:38

I am always 'shocked' by the number of plebs in this country who are lazy, idle, entitled creatures who think there's something low and terrible about bending a back and picking up a bit of litter, or moving a few chairs.

AttentionAll · 24/01/2023 15:40

@upinaballoon I agree. And the plebs should do it for free. After all they would just be watching TV in their tiny living rooms otherwise.

That is outrageous that they are asking volunteers to litter pick. Bloody cheek.

They could always pay people to pick up litter instead. But that would make it even more expensive…

So there musty have been about 70 US inaugurations in last queens reign - that is a whopping bill.

GloomyDarkness · 24/01/2023 16:14

I suspect there would be negotiations - as apparently it's not always clear what crown, family and state actually own - it can be murky in a 1000 year old intuition that's been reformed a few times and over thown once.

Some of it will go on police overtime, army overtime, that's cool, they can spend that money in their local communities, local soft play, pubs, cafes and things. There's an army base near us so I hope some of our soldiers get sent down to get the benefits.

The Army doesn’t get overtime…

True, only additional Army costs would be travel, lodging & per diem to be sent to London for temporary duty.
