I thought H looked good. His shoes & jeans. Wasn’t sure about the open necked shirt, but it suppose it’s not a formal event?

@IcedPurple " Look at all the ugly graffiti in the background of one of the photos. That wouldn't have happened had the 'grey men' been organising things. "

This is a fairly trivial comment but I think it was Billy Connelly who said the Queen (QEII ) thought the country smelled of fresh paint, because people would paint the facing bits before she arrived. 😂 I suspect she didn't give a hoot.

Having looked at some of the photographs , I just think - Oh let them do it. They seem to me to be trying to get back the Royalness , but on such a lesser scale than they had before so why bother - pre and post them stepping back from WRF my suspicion is nothing they do as "pubic engagements" will ever look like proper WRF engagements. A tight camera shot and relatively few people for a well publicised event does not a beloved royal couple make. (my opinion)

The Military used to paint everything before Royalty arrived including boulders edging the grass.

To make up for it, he can have a capital T.

What's that perception that some hold got to do with the King's letter? The letter was in fact clarifying that they are not to be considered working royals by the government, the military and Lord Lieutenancies nor by anyone when it comes to any kind of representation of the King or the royal family.

If some people like to go out and see famous people or "royalty" then good for them, but Harry and Meghan's activities are nothing to do with the royal family.

The letter was from the Lord Chamberlain's, not the king. It was about procedure for government departments and charities. It easn't for the press or the public. As the UK has a free press, they can cover what they like, within the strictures of the law (preferably). They cover HaM because they're newsworthy, and one of the reasons they are newsworthy is because some people see them as royals, letter or not.

I think there was always going to be press interest in the pair of them together doing a whatever this is.

They might think it shows that they are still popular & therefore worth giving money to in some capacity?

Idk!

So do we know whether or not it was an official allocation by the rota? My impression is that it was. There was a lot of press there.

There's no way this could have been an 'official allocation' as it's not a royal event. The fact that there were a 'lot of press' kind of confirms this. The whole point of the rota is to reduce the number of press present at any official royal event.

What actual difference has the Lord Chancellor's statement made, if they are holding events that look like royal events like this (albeit shite ones)?

It made it clear the the Sussexes represent nobody other than themselves, and any organisation which hosts them must be aware of this. Nobody can stop them visiting whatever charity wants to be associated with them.

No I suppose it wasn't an "official" allocation, but 4 of them turned up, according to Tom Sykes, ex RR, who was reporting a live stream. Possibly more than turned up for the actual royal event in Wales today. He says this was being covered by them in the same style the RR would cover a royal event - a select pool going into the event, pooled copy, pooled photographs etc.

He's been speaking to Duncan Larcombe (founder member of the RR) and Robert Jobson this afternoon, who said this event, its coverage by royal reporters and royal style of execution (walkabouts etc)is making a mockery of the Sandringham agreement (both were highly critical and mystified about them still being on the royal website). Jobson is calling it a rival royal court by stealth and half in half out in effect, all being facilitated by slavish coverage by the legacy media. It doesn't matter if it's actually crap, as they get the fame and column inches they want anyway,

I watched some of Sykes' coverage, and he's been pretty scathing about how it all went down. He was speaking to the few people in the crowd, who were in the main treating this as a royal visit. I think a royal is a royal is a royal to many who will have no idea what the Lord Chamberlain said or meant. Sykes said there was little knowledge amongst the crowd of what the Sussexes have done. It looked pretty dismal too. Press far outnumbering onlookers, save for the 3rd event, but even that he described as being full of randomers - curious onlookers rather than fans. On the other hand, Meghan wore clothes and said she's, "Happy to be back" which will make all the headlines🙄and nobody was booing them - unlike Charles in Wales who had the "Not My King" crowd shouting at him. I think we can guess who will be on the front pages tomorrow.

If she wants to return to acting, more power to her. I have a feeling that she realizes that she won't be getting many offers, if any, from Hollywood. I think she's probably hoping to break into the UK film/TV industry.

She had her own production company with a NF contract! She could have cast herself!

I don't buy that she's considering a return to acting. It's hard work and if you're not very good, as she isn't, it's difficult to hide it and she'd hate getting bad reviews. Also, while Hollywood isn't as dominant as it once was, the British film industry is still much smaller. That's why so many British actors go to America to look for work. Even putting aside who Meghan is and her mediocre acting abilities, there just aren't a ton of roles for 45 year old American women in the British entertainment industry.

But can't you just see the look on her face if she gets offers for 'leading lady's coworker' or even worse 'leading lady's mum'? After all, at 45 she's old enough to have a 20 year old.

I'd imagine so, because the whole point of the royal rota is that only one journalist and photographer cover the entire event!

Yes so I gather. Good for them that the Harry and Meghan Worldwide Privacy Tour is giving them something to do rather than sitting at their desks twiddling their thumbs.

I've just watched some of the footage from today, and it's just made me feel increasingly cross that King Charles hasn't put a stop to this. H & M have had more coverage than he and Camilla had today.

They were to all intents mimicking a royal visit while not being part of the Royal Family. The life that I thought that they really didn't want to have.

Are you able to identify the schools which interrupted their pupils' education to cheer private citizens? I intend to do an FOI to Nottingham City Education Dept regarding parent permissions and the line of decision making.

I'm afraid not, @ShamedBySiri. I only knew about someone visiting nearby businesses to drum up bystanders because of a friend who works at one of them, but I've never visited their workplace myself so wouldn't even know the names of the local schools

heatdome · Today 19:02

So MM used to complain that she couldn’t believe she didn’t get paid for walkabouts and clearly didn’t enjoy the more mundane Royal activities, but she had a nice house, staff and security she didn’t have to pay for and lots of perks. And now she’s back doing walkabouts which she dislikes, but this time not only is she not getting paid she also has to try and earn living at the same time, pay for her staff and security and presumably eventually pay for a house (unless her and Harry are going to scrounge off richer people than them forever). Yeah they’re really winning, aren’t they?

I said this earlier and was told what could he do, arrest them? The point is when he has them to tea it supports their 'we are royal and vips' showing off.

He needs to just write them off, go nc and remove their titles. They are absolutely taking the piss.

The flowers are given to local hospitals in the area. At least that’s what happens with the WRF.

I doubt it. Hospitals don't allow flowers any more. The days of vases which the student nurses got to scrub at weekends are long gone.

No, I've never heard this stuff. I've no idea why it's being repeated on here.

Perhaps the age-old (and until now largely extinct) technique of trying to get an unwelcome thread deleted?

It used to work, and largely because people engaged and threads turned into a bunfight, which is why it's probably worth just ignoring

Mossyfox · Today 19:06

@valeriy2 re your post about Lord Foulkes saying that royal engagements (and indeed quasi-royal engagements) aren't work - I have had one single day of doing what the royals do all the time (I launched a ship, long story) and I have rarely been so tired at the end of a day. It is absolutely exhausting being the focus of scrutiny and being acutely conscious that you have a protocol to follow. It may not be work as in manual labour, but it's draining. As a once in a lifetime experience it was absolutely amazing, but also very stressful.

I'd also add that if that's not work, I'd also argue that being paid to sit on a nice squishy red leather bench and occasionally spout off about something doesn't sound much like work, either, so motes and beams, Lord F!

I'm not a great royalist. But the point is a 'working royal' carries out duties as a representative of the King who is Head of State. Harry and Meghan ard no longer deemed to represent the King. So why are they carrying out royal duties. I wonder if they will push on regardless.

Starryfifty · Today 19:06

I know it has been said so many times before but it WOULD absolutely make a difference removing their titles and fgs, remove them from the website !!! Tom S is spot on. Not many people can differentiate between a working and non working royal

Do you know @Lifestooshort71 I agree with you here. No-one can say he is not royal , because he is the King's son. That will never change . I think of him as royal family (small r small f). I think I am right in saying that only those working are capital R capital F. This is shamelessly googled " Prince Harry is a small r royal ("royal") because he is born into the royal family but is no longer a capital R Royal("Royal") as he does not perform official duties or work as a senior working royal" I'm happy if someone contradicts me on that.

Oh well. After today , I do think he liked the capital R royalness . I suspect M did also except when she didn't.

I have read comments from @IcedPurple and ( apologies if I am misrepresenting you ) Why would they have given up what they could have had , and then come back to do a poundshop version , if their massive money making schemes weren't working. I don't know.

What I would say is , being a member of the WRF includes the balcony , the Cenotaph , Trooping of the Colour , Govt approved tours , inter alia. I think that was their idea of HIHO.
Which to paraphrase Henry Reed "In their case they have not got"

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · Today 19:14

Very likely that by luring people in to speculate and make remarks. Fortunately people are wise to that and shut it down.
