I am currently reading Russsll Myers Catherine & William. Enjoying it but one thing that stands out is how the Middletons have never put a foot wrong.
Carole was not from an aristocratic background nor was Michael but they raised their kids not to put a step wrong. Kate also had embarrassing family members (Uncle Gary) but she still invited him to the wedding which was the right thing to do & it nipped the media scandal in the bud & took the wind out of any sails.. Meghan invited none of her extended family or her dad & it caused massive media speculation.
Kate was born for royal life & is a natural. Very proud of our future queen. Her parents did an amazing job.

So someone non royal can do a better job than those born into it?

Absolutely! Compare Harry to Catherine.
Catherine is so discreet, causes no embarrassment, is incredibly loyal to her extremely supportive family & is will say or do nothing controversial as knows it's not her job as a member of the Royal Family.

Compare Ham to Catherine they are just chaotic & have been a catastrophe for the royal family. No discretion, sold stories to the media for millions & are utterly dysfunctional.

Honestly I think if you grow up in the RF you're going to be dysfunctional. It's only through marrying normal people that the RF will survive. And even that's going to be very difficult going forward.

It appears now that they can't do the usual "marry the European aristocracy" as none of the aristos will touch the RF job, or indeed the RF themselves, with a barge-pole. The only people that are going to be willing to marry Princes George or Louis, or Princess Charlotte is British social climbing middle-classers (which is dysfunctional in itself), or sons/daughters of international oligarchs that need to RoyalFamilyWash whatever grubby background the family may have come from. I do feel sorry for those kids - they didn't ask to be born into this. What a narrow restricted life for them.

I do agree with the other posters. Catherine is an excellent soon-to-be Queen. She is skinny, pretty, bland, smiles a lot, keeps her mouth shut, fulfilled her fertility duty, and seems very grateful for her lot. She's obviously very close to her family, probably because she knows they are the only people (including her husband, the rest of the RF, and her friends) that she can trust. No wonder she spends so much time with them.

Meghan was a disaster. On paper she wasn't too bad. Very pretty, slim, smiley, does lots of charity work, and mixed race which brought a real modernity to the RF. Unfortunately she couldn't master the "smile, wave, keep quiet, do what your told" skill needed for the RF, went 180 degrees in the other direction, coming across as tacky, fake, sanctimonious and money hungry. That said, their marriage seems strong and it looks like she's going to be around for the long haul. If the British media want the RF to continue, they'd be best trying to come to some sort of agreement with HAM that doesn't result in the RF crashing down entirely.

Meghan grew up in a dysfunctional background like Harry & the cycle continues.. in fighting, spreading rumours, selling stories to the press, causing havoc..

Catherine grew up in a tight knit ,functional loving family & her experience in the firm is completely different. She & William are very adamant to bring the children up in a functional, loving, supportive environment like Catherine had.

I do think that the RF's survival going forward will be very much down to Williams commitment to do things differently when his time comes, and a lot of that is due to the influence and stability of the Middleton family. He has shown himself to be very different from HLMQE and I think that has also been enabled by KC3 as well as him being 'grounded' by the Middletons (all of them).

I don't care about this kind of gossip.
But you are very very wrong to imply that if someone is brought up in a dysfunctional family they can't break the cycle. In fact your inference is positively offensive.

They do seem to a stable non-chaotic family that give her a lot of support, which is needed for that job. Yes, they probably engineered the St Andrews meet up, but I'd say without any real expectation that it would be successful.

Meghan's mother seems like a nice lady too, but honestly you need a village supporting you to survive in the RF, as Catherine has. A mum on her own isn't enough. Actions post-Mexit aside, you can kind of understand why Meghan wasn't able to cope, especially with not being brought up around that lifestyle, as Catherine was at Marleborough. I'd expect she had reservations going into it, and Harry probably assured her that if it got too much they'd leave - given how disillusioned he was even before he met her. Seems he kept his word.

No-one said they can’t break the cycle - just that some don’t find it particularly easy to. And some may carry on in that cycle.

(That is a choice. More so when they have easy access to therapy and the means to escape the environment they feel was damaging to them. Some could create a new cycle instead of creating more misery).

What I find offensive is that some people find offence in words that aren’t even there.

lastapache · 21/09/2026 13:22

Some might say that Meghan DID break the cycle by noticing an environment that was toxic for her, and using her adult autonomy to remove herself from it.

Maybe therapy did work.

It was implied if you are brought up in a close loving family that is what you will create. If you are brought up in a dysfunctional family that is what you will create.
It was offensive.

ThrwhelsOntHEbuzgoroundandrund · 21/09/2026 13:29

Implied? It is all in the eyes of the reader then.

Because it wasn’t actually said.

I specifically implied Ham.. the cycle is continuing. When Meghan met Harry she wasn't speaking to her brother or sister then proceeded to cut out her father.
By 2020 coincidentally Harry no longer spoke to his brother & proceeded to cut out his father.

2026 Lili & Archie do not speak to or have never met their maternal grandfather aged 82 & unwell despite his pleas. They have no contact with any of their Markle relatives .
They have no contact with their Uncle & Aunt Catherine or William or their first cousins George, Charlotte & Louis.
Peter Philips never invited Ham to their wedding so L&A won't mix with that side of the family either..
This looks pretty much like a cycle to me. And to clarify it is not gossip it is fact. It is pointing out the obvious.

In the future Archie & Lili will want to know why did we never meet Grandpa Markle? Why do we never get to play with our Wales cousins & see Uncle William & Auntie Catherine?
How will Ham explain this?

As for Harry, it might appear that his life is chaotic and dysfunctional, and it is a terribly pity that there is such a divide between him and his brother, but compared to other "spares" over the past couple of hundred years he's doing fantastically well. No gambling, no drug or alcohol addictions, no untreated depression etc. He seems relatively happy.

The only spares over the past couple of hundred years that didn't go off the rails were Queen Victoria's, and that's only because she micro-managed them through military careers. Clearly they tried that template with Harry but it just wasn't enough.

ThrwhelsOntHEbuzgoroundandrund · 21/09/2026 13:37

You would think it would be time for them to embrace their inner chirpy budgie.

Instead?

You can't be serious?! She's back in the Uk with her husband their tails between their legs looking to get back in with the royal family with the begging bowl out demanding taxpayers money to fund their security!

Exactly! Why has she come back if it's so toxic?! Yet another lie she made in that unbelievably laughable Oprah interview.

And yet no trying to reconcile with poor Mr Markle because he's no use to them..

The timing of their move back to the Uk coincides so nicely with Spencers book... uncanny timing, surely it's a coincide 🤔

Spencer has taken the headlines from the Hams currently. They're not going to like that. It's going to be a war between these two parties to headline.

Yes, he has admitted to drinking, drug taking and depression through his teenage years and early twenties to cope with the loss of his mother, but he appears to have mostly kicked those habits. If he hadn't, it'd be well covered by the press. Looking at the other spares, the less said about Andrew the better, Margaret was an alcoholic her whole life, Bertie had chronic anxiety and social phobia, the Duke of Kent's father was a notorious gambler and drug addict, Victoria's spare when she was growing up turned out to be a despot. In comparison, Harry's doing ok.

As for their return to Britain I don't think it's that deep. They have come back because Harry wants his children to have a British education, and to be British, not American. As far as I am aware, they haven't said they're looking to take up the working royal jobs again (not that they'd be let even if they wanted to). I can't see them thinking that they'll get more work if they're located in the UK, given their unpopularity. So I don't think its financially motivated - they'll take a hit coming back.

The security thing I sympathise with them a bit. Harry didn't ask to be born into the RF. Whether he works for the RF or not, the fact that he requires more security then the average famous person is somewhat an accident of birth. Now, some of it is because of the stupid things he said in his book, and their media shenanigans since they left, and so a portion of his heightened risk is of his own doing. So I'd would say a contribution towards his security would be fair, without actually paying for all of it.

I appreciate your post & your opinion but I would say selling out your whole family & selling stories to the press with your wife for a quick buck is the opposite of doing ok!!

This. He’s not hanging out with trafficked girls in the Caribbean, but has a wife and children who by all accounts he adores. Good on him.

op how come H&M "selling out your whole family"
it wrong , but when "poor" Mr Markle does it he gets your sympathy......???
