Anne and Edward have been much more pragmatic and consequence seem much happier and content.

Yes, Harry’s circumstances that he bemoans at such length were also the case for Anne, the second born, who also had the disadvantage of being a girl who then slid further down the line of succession when more brothers arrived. And I think most people would agree Anne seems to be arguably the most well adjusted of them all. So it doesn't have to be the way Harry insists it turns out.

Surely people were given days off in the past, by their employer? Hence all the bunting and joyousness.
Trooping the Colour is a wonderful experience and broadcast all over the world. But after the current lot have popped off, we don't need the King's cousins, aunts and uncles to be on the gravy train.
If James Wessex (?) ends up with a lovely wife who charms all à la recently departed Duchess of Kent, then sure, she can give out prizes at fêtes etc. But we don't need them to be officially employed by the taxpayer.

I've never known anyone be given the day off work for a local royal visit! Although a member of my family and her colleagues were allowed to move their lunchtime so that they could go and see QEll & PP when she opened a theatre complex near to their office

And I really don't think James Wessex is going to play any part in Royal life other than attending family occasions ~ he looks so shy, bless him, and I hope he enjoys agriculture college and finds a job that suits him, perhaps helping to run one of the Royal estates?

JSMill · 08/09/2026 17:05

@PullTheBricksDownI have heard speak of how nannies favoured her db but she just laughs it off. I think she inherited her df’s strength and stoicism.

Who exactly are in Harry and Meghan’s Team ? Liam ? And?

There’s Liam McGuire, Markus Anderson, and that James Holt bloke. Holt was sent ahead of them back to England like John the Baptist preparing the way for the messianic duo.

There are loads of Netflix Originals that never take off, she was ultimately lucky that Suits did.

@Mylovelygreendress if it is ok with everyone else please continue to post the blind links, just with a warning - I do like reading them (with a shovel or salt) but I find it difficult to wade through all the other rubbish on X

I mean Suits never really took off until the engagement did it?

It originally aired in the UK in 2012 on the "Dave channel" (a channel billed for "the lads" in the UK) in the later evening slot at 9pm or 10pm - sometimes as a double bill with White Collar... Meghan was not one of the leads but a recurring love interest.

I think Harry was just flattered that the "hot girl" from TV was interested in him.

And I think the days of having numerous WRF members such as QEll & PP, QEQM, Princess Margaret, the Gloucesters, all 3 of the Kents and all of QEll four children are well and truly over.

All the European RF's have downsized. I know all of the countries are much smaller than the UK and Commonwealth but, as far as I am aware, they only consist of ~

Norway ~ new King & Queen (who has a lot of health issues) + their two children the younger of whom is just off to uni

Sweden ~ King & Queen, Crown Princess & her husband (+ 2 school age children), King's younger two children and their spouses

Denmark ~ King & Queen + their 4 children the eldest of whom is doing military service, the former Queen & her sister both of whom are very elderly

Belgium ~ King & Queen + their four children - the eldest has just finished university and the second is doing military service. I believe the younger two are still studying in European countries. The King's sister who I think does quite a lot to support her brother and the King's brother who has a bit of a reputation for not toeing the Royal line . . .

Spain ~ King & Queen + two daughters who, I think, are doing military service and at uni

I don't think we need massive numbers of Royals any more. The duties have changed and I don't think there's been an outcry in this country of "We're opening a new . . . . and we can't get a Royal to come and cut a ribbon"

All the main events are well and truly covered by our Royals so I really don't see any need for the Sussex children to be lined up as prospective 'support' for the RF

I think that if there IS a need for additional diplomatic or charitable representation, that can come from giving dukedoms to a few civilians.

I mean, why should Harry have ever been given one just because he got married? Vs, to pick at random, David Attenborough? Some retired military general?

If we were to give the royal adjacency to individuals of merit whilst keeping the family royals small, then it would go a long way to preserving the monarchy.

(I'm not a monarchist or a republican either - I'm not fond of regime change though. Evolution not revolution is my preference.)

That was so funny! "Senior Nanny" always flavoured C and he never got into trouble! She was laughing about how differently they were treated by the Nanny because he was the heir. She's got over it though.

Hello all, I’m trying to catch up on unfolding events while we’re in the middle of roof maintenance and repairs here at Casa Crow. Total stressy nightmare is all I can say.

Liam McGuire is proving to be a real disaster for the Sussexes, IMO. Since he took the helm of their yawing ship, it’s taken on even more water and entered even choppier seas.

Everyone said when he was appointed that Liam's aggressive and pugnacious style of PR was not a good choice for the diplomatic/royal circles that HAM were hoping to rejoin.

The constant aggressive manipulations and clapbacks that turn out to be wrong are making them a laughing stock - the olive branch terrace... Australia... ANL... and now clarification of their totally unofficial status

diddl · 08/09/2026 17:19

And I think most people would agree Anne seems to be arguably the most well adjusted of them all.

She had her horse riding to concentrate on as well so had an occupation.

Yes, you can't hope to bludgeon your way through when the people you are trying to convince have the mastery of phrases such as 'reflections may vary'. Sussex PR is totally out of its depth .

There has been an extraordinary amount of fuss about the king pointing out that the Sussexes are ‘ non working Royals’
However, I don’t think that they returned to the UK with any expectation or intention of becoming working royals again
If anything , the fact that this distinction has to be emphasised so strongly makes me wonder whether there is a concern that the public might actually expect or even want Harry and Meghan to undertake royal duties

What I don’t understand is why there is so much anger and venom directed at the Sussexes over their role
It isn’t their fault that the Royal Family is struggling to maintain public interest , nor is it their fault that many people aren’t particularly interested in the other senior royals .
If the media want the ‘irrelevant ‘ Sussexes to sink into oblivion then they should desist from writing the endless dissertations about them.
They will not though, because Harry and Meghan ( unlike the other royals ) are of interest to public , even those who despise them .

When I was about 6 or 7 the whole of my primary school plus all teachers and the caretaker had the afternoon off school to go and stand at the side of the road and wave furiously as HLMQE and PP finally hurtled past in the shiniest car I had ever seen. We lived in a small Lancashire mining village and had never seen a Rolls Royce before so it was a memorable afternoon but for possibly the wrong reasons.

You should read Spare. Seriously, it's mostly unintentionally hilarious with a large dash of wtf...

I read it in Asda, chapter by chapter over a couple of weeks while DP did the checkout on his own. I didn’t want to pay for it, but was intrigued as to its content.

From the photoshopped cover photo that airbrushed his nose right through to the last page, it just got more and more fabulist and deranged throughout. But nasty and petty too - very ill-advised for a man with charity connections attempting to cling on to the remnants of royal association.

I think Meg sang, the seals erupted in spontaneous applause and that's how H knew she was the one. Or at least that was what he spouted in Spare.

Christ 😂😂🙈🙉

Yes AMW lobbied QEII very heavily for Beatrice and Eugenie to be working royals (and given security) - he gave that whole speech about them being the "blood princesses" of their generation in a nasty swipe at Kate.

Harry seems to be going the same way as AMW in being unable to cope with the loss of status and prestige as they start to fall down the LoS. Other siblings of the monarch/future monarch, such as Anne and Edward, have been much more pragmatic for themselves and their kids.

Agree, but H thinks he's a level up from his cousins as he's the son of Diana, the world's most special and famous princess ever.

Yes, it was nasty and petty. Like all the interviews he did.
So bitter and petulant.

While I think William went though a ‘rough’ stage in his 30s I think he is looking gorgeous now.
George is also technically only 1/4 Windsor. He’s 1/4 Spencer and 1/2 Middleton.

Me too, DD, William’s aged very nicely indeed!

George maybe looking more Middleton at the moment, but tall and handsome either way. The kids seem to have had as normal an upbringing as seems possible for their very extreme circumstances.

I imagine you living somewhere delightful like Durham or Corbridge, enjoying sunsets over beautiful buildings.

Sadly nowhere quite so picturesque, though Corbridge is one of my favourite places for an afternoon potter.

This. He overplays the Diana card - it’s tedious.
