A continuation of the shenanigans of our favourite non working royals! 😁

Whew! Finally caught up. 8 hr time diff is really a bitch.

I was drinking my (very) early morning coffee when the comments were posted about the 'prince and princess of the north' and 'walls'. Being as I am re-watching GoT my not yet quite awake brain thought "Yes!! Put them in the Night's Watch and send them to The Wall!!". I'm more awake now.

I think by 'not enough time to respond' to The Letter they meant they weren't given time to take their little red pencils to it and return it for corrections'.

Who exactly are in Harry and Meghan’s Team ? Liam ? And?

He stole that story too 😂 It was on Annika on TV and is the old story of the selkie who came ashore and impregnated the woman 😂😂

Bet the selkie wasn't looking at a lock of his deceased mothers hair whilst he was impregnating said woman though!

Does this now mean that the Hamlets can't be working royals if they chose to as H has stated he wants for them ?

Harry can want and demand all he likes but it doesn't mean it will happen!

AMW - lobbied for roles for Beatrice/Eugenie - but it never happed
Princess Anne - no titles or working royal status for Zara or Peter
Prince Edward - kids are younger - I feel James might be being trained for a real working role in land management when he is older but not engagements

Princess Margaret's children David and Sarah were never working royals

They're like two wasps at a picnic; annoying irritants constantly hanging around, spoiling the atmosphere and everyone wants rid of them!

I love that description! 😎

And I think the days of having numerous WRF members such as QEll & PP, QEQM, Princess Margaret, the Gloucesters, all 3 of the Kents and all of QEll four children are well and truly over.

All the European RF's have downsized. I know all of the countries are much smaller than the UK and Commonwealth but, as far as I am aware, they only consist of ~

Norway ~ new King & Queen (who has a lot of health issues) + their two children the younger of whom is just off to uni

Sweden ~ King & Queen, Crown Princess & her husband (+ 2 school age children), King's younger two children and their spouses

Denmark ~ King & Queen + their 4 children the eldest of whom is doing military service, the former Queen & her sister both of whom are very elderly

Belgium ~ King & Queen + their four children - the eldest has just finished university and the second is doing military service. I believe the younger two are still studying in European countries. The King's sister who I think does quite a lot to support her brother and the King's brother who has a bit of a reputation for not toeing the Royal line . . .

Spain ~ King & Queen + two daughters who, I think, are doing military service and at uni

I don't think we need massive numbers of Royals any more. The duties have changed and I don't think there's been an outcry in this country of "We're opening a new . . . . and we can't get a Royal to come and cut a ribbon"

All the main events are well and truly covered by our Royals so I really don't see any need for the Sussex children to be lined up as prospective 'support' for the RF

Spaniels4Eva · 08/09/2026 16:25

I think Charlotte and Louis will have very "normal" lives too, working and showing up to support Dad/George when needed. It seems a much healthier way to live, given the goldfish bowl that William and Harry grew up in.

I really hope they’re both encouraged to seek their own careers. I suspect Hazmat, being a complete imbecile was unable to do this, and I have heard he wasn’t very ‘treasured’ in the forces, so he’s kind of just a floating, seething winge bag with no purpose … pretty sad really if he wasn’t such an arse

Chrysanthemumsinpots · 08/09/2026 16:33

I’m not sure this is entirely true. Not an outcry so much as a loss of interest which in many ways is just as bad. Not having people who turn up, glad hand, pat on back, give publicity means people begin to wonder about the point of it at all and why it costs so much.

AcrossthePond55 · 08/09/2026 16:37

You know, the more I read of H's fantasy narrative surrounding his 'romance' with M, the more it sounds like one of those 'bodice-ripper' romance novels I read back in the '80s. Not the Jilly Cooper bonk-busters, but the full on OTT 17-19th century UK setting 'pirate/secret duke/innocent virgin in need of protection' extravaganzas. They were fun to read but completely unbelievable. As was intended by the authors. Harry, on the other hand, expects his readers to believe his codswallop.

'Singing to the seals' lol. Wonder what she was singing? 'Someday My Prince Will Come' or 'I'm Just a Girl Who Cain't Say No'?

I live in a military city so we probably get more visits than some other places. But people around here don't take the day off work to go and see the RF like they would have done 30 or 40 years ago.

What they are interested in (as far as my family and friends are concerned) are the major events, Trooping the Colour, Remembrance Day, the State Visits (both here and abroad) and the big family occasions like births, weddings, funerals and jubilees.

I know several people who have been to the recent exhibition at BP and have really enjoyed it

I think the interest is still there but in a different way to previous decades

StormGazing · 08/09/2026 16:43

I imagine you living somewhere delightful like Durham or Corbridge, enjoying sunsets over beautiful buildings.

@CoffeeCantata It was reported that as H left, KC said to Camilla and a member of staff “Harry never listens!”
While the above quote would be entirely correct, can you not see it is made up gossip? No employee who would be within hearing distance in the King's private residence would spread that kind of gossip, so soon. They just wouldn't.
I love these threads and the schadenfreude is delicious, but can't bear this reporting if lazy rumour as fact.

It might be rumour.

But if the podcast source is the person I think it is - allegedly of course 😉😉- then he has a close source to someone who was definitely in the room!
😉

The irony is, part of the slimming down of the UK monarchy has come because HAM flounced off. They had to slim down.

Oh my goodness!

I missed yesterday's news so just had the equalled of a whole thread to try and catch up on!

Some really excellent comments have been made, I've much enjoyed everyone's reaction!

My hat off to the guy who wrote that letter. Just occasionally, you come across someone whose job isn't 'writer' but who manages to have a wonderful way with words that just does the job perfectly.

I'd love to have been a fly on the wall when HaM got that in their inbox.

Didn't Andrew beg for Bea and Eugenie to be working royals? And was repeatedly told no. And B&E were brought up knowing how to behave as royals in public.
There's no way A&L would be given the chance.
As per PP, yes it happened in the Princess Diaries, but that's Anne Hathaway, who would probably be one of the few people who actually COULD start working as a Royal and do it very well. She'd also be a lovely sidekick for Catherine and not try to barge her way to the front all the time.
In fact, Anne Hathaway would be great as a working royal 😂

Yes AMW lobbied QEII very heavily for Beatrice and Eugenie to be working royals (and given security) - he gave that whole speech about them being the "blood princesses" of their generation in a nasty swipe at Kate.

Harry seems to be going the same way as AMW in being unable to cope with the loss of status and prestige as they start to fall down the LoS. Other siblings of the monarch/future monarch, such as Anne and Edward, have been much more pragmatic for themselves and their kids.

Surely people were given days off in the past, by their employer? Hence all the bunting and joyousness.
Trooping the Colour is a wonderful experience and broadcast all over the world. But after the current lot have popped off, we don't need the King's cousins, aunts and uncles to be on the gravy train.
If James Wessex (?) ends up with a lovely wife who charms all à la recently departed Duchess of Kent, then sure, she can give out prizes at fêtes etc. But we don't need them to be officially employed by the taxpayer.

Anne and Edward have been much more pragmatic and consequence seem much happier and content.
