Mercy for Meghan & Harry

The outpouring of criticism about them both has been enthralling & entertaining, but I really think it's time to just leave them alone. Let them get on with their lives and sink into relative obscurity, like Edward and Wallis Simpson. What do you think?

Sorry. I said “small boy”because I was characterising an adult addressing an unspecified child. Both of them experienced significant childhood trauma in the death of their mother and the behaviour of their father and the other adults in their lives. I find the “they should have got over it by now” attitude extraordinary. Particularly on a forum where “going no contact” with parents and grandparents is frequently advised in response to range of behaviours of varying severity.

I’m not talking about Harry. I’m talking about Diana’s children and the impact her death and its aftermath will have had on them. And the impact their growing knowledge of Charles and Camilla’s relationship will have had on them. However much Mumsnetters think they should have “grown out of it”

It’s not growing out of it. It’s called coming to terms with it and moving on in your life, something that Harry appears unable to do

Benjithedog · 11/08/2026 09:52

adragoncalledaudrey · 11/08/2026 09:39

“So not appalling circumstances at all. Right. Sorry, small boy. Your mum’s dead. Entirely her own fault. Now, the public are being a bit antsy about the way Granny’s been acting. Just come and have a look at all these flowers-read a card or two. England expects and all that.”

It wasn’t clear here. Which is why I commented.

H frequently seems to be thought of as the only victim of his mum dying. He was small but William was young too and arguably at one of the more difficult stages of a child’s life.

I can’t think why his grief is ignored because H is always the perpetual victim. So many have tragic events in their lives and don’t act like him.

Do I feel sorry for their loss? Yes.
Do I feel sorry for H? No. Not any more. He has access to counselling that some only dream of and still acts like a child. During his teenage years, his forces years and even now.

He has his own family, is financially comfortable and should be looking forward instead of always looking back and bemoaning his lot.

Completely this

adragoncalledaudrey · 11/08/2026 09:58

It isn’t about ‘getting over it’ but working towards coming to terms with it and looking forward as others have said.

Grief I understand. Making it your raison d'être is a waste of a life.

We only get one.

The behaviour of their parents? Yes. That can affect you too. Note the plural here.

He has told lies about his childhood and his father from the look of it. I bet if his mum had lived, he’d have bitched about her just as much. She didn’t become saintly just because she died. She was as flawed as the rest of us.

What I find extraordinary is performative grief and using it as an excuse for his pretty much stinking attitude.

Not one poster has said they should "get over it".
I think it's all been explained very well by @Benjithedogand @adragoncalledaudrey.

It’s cute how some posters are not going to address Harry being the reason Harry stays in the news.

Harry giving a woman an unknown white pill.

But happy to focus on Harry, ever the small boy, without resources over 30 plus years to come to terms with his parents marriage. Harry, the only child, apparently.

Arjan · 11/08/2026 11:14

YouSawBrigadoon · 09/08/2026 11:24

I think they’re doing just fine. They seem to have a pretty idyllic life. They’re free from the constraints of the ghastly royal family, and they’ve distanced themselves from the toxic British media. There’s still a fanbase for them and they seem to enjoy that. I don’t find anything remotely offensive about either one of them.

Good luck to the two of them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I disagree, they are trying so hard to realign with the RF that I think they would jump at the chance to be welcomed back into the fold, and by all accounts it looks like that is what they are working towards. Harry’s recent announcement he would be staying at Buck Palace, the most iconic of Royal piles even though he already knew he would not be, appeared to be a real act of desperation to be linked to the upper echelons of the British Monarchy.

They obviously don’t appear to see the British media as the toxic element they previously claimed, bearing in mind they have a private WhatsApp group with many of the reporters working for the very same tabloids they claimed they would never work with.

Things have gone to pot for them and they are now publicly doing a full u-turn on all the things they initially claimed and which had brought them a lot of support and sympathy.

They looks like idiots to most people,

adragoncalledaudrey · 11/08/2026 11:18

I’ll happily chat about William acting victim when he does it.

Likewise when he spreads lies about his family.

Plasters posts all over the media taking his kids to see his mother’s grave. Wants to sell stories about his mother to tv companies despite allegedly having an agreement that the two of them would not do that.

Makes his charities all about him or Catherine.

But, you know, he doesn’t.

To me, William took his tragedy and decided he would live his life and look to the future.

And this thread is about mercy for M&H. When I believe it should read merchy because that is fitting.

Yes, indeed.

But from others you’ll get a swift “there’s no evidence for that” when it comes to any positive comment about William.

And a little birdie that flies straight away whenever evidence of Harry’s misdeeds is presented.

PetulaGordeno · 11/08/2026 11:29

I think William had such a different relationship with his mother because of the age difference with Harry. As Diana’s marriage crumbled, it appears she leaned on William a lot. So I think as much as he loved her, he was a little more realistic about who she was.
He must have absorbed the shock of her death differently, because at different ages and stages that’s what happened. In a way he had such a different life - the heir, tea with Granny at Windsor, the protected one.
I can understand why that would breed resentment.
The role of the heir involves such a weight.
Who would want to be the spare? It involves more freedom over time, as a certain AMW exploited so much that it has lost him his role.
Had Harry married someone like Cressida, I am sure they would have been a popular, lovely, admired couple.
In marrying Meghan it created a platform on a world stage that elevated both of them initially. Had they stayed, and played the game, they could have been a very powerful couple.
Their interviews/the book etc did cause issues initially but you are dealing with a family and a system of privilege that it is over 1000 years old. It’s hard to upend. I don’t even think AMW going to prison would manage it, and it’s where he belongs.
To be fair to Meghan, I don’t think she had a clue what she was taking on. She probably thought she could change everything, and quickly. That was never going to happen.
I do think it’s a shame that they left. They really would have brought something special, as would their children.

adragoncalledaudrey · 11/08/2026 11:45

Personally?

I think H filled her head with a load of nonsense about how she could become the new ‘Queen of hearts’. And she sucked it up hard.

For a woman who was taken with the RF as a girl/young woman. She must have thought all her ships had come in.

He was already bitter. I bet she resented the lack of future she was probably promised and their resentment and bitterness grew together into something unimaginable.

Their actions sealed their fate and makes them undeserving of mercy.

Could they have brought something fresh and exciting to the RF? I believe they could have - if they had not been two already deeply damaged people.

They say that damaged people are more dangerous because they know they can survive.

They've shown that.

They've also shown that their insistence on living in a whirl of misery can be instrumental in folk being unable to thrive.

Arjan · 11/08/2026 11:52

The best thing she could have done would have been to have her mum on her cooking show.

Her mom clearly does not want publicity, so why should she be forced into appearing on Meghan’s cooking show.

I agree about the location of the filming, one of the biggest mistakes was hiring out someone else’s much nicer and cooler kitchen to film it in. The other big mistake was having on all those people ona a show that was supposed to be about entertaining friends and family, people she had clearly never met before and who all had current contracts with Netflix.

It was so inauthentic and shallow and it epitomized and exposed everything she is deemed to be. Plus she has no personality or on screen presence, that was the biggest mistake of all.

CurlewKate · 11/08/2026 12:18

Harry is probably not as much of a dickhead as he is painted. William is probably not as saintly as he is painted. They are both damaged people who had uniquely traumatic childhoods. They are both
poster boys for the abolition of the monarchy.

adragoncalledaudrey · 11/08/2026 12:23

I agree Arjan.

Her mum has always looked like the token family member - wheeled out to prove that she isn’t a bad person and can nurture some family relationships. (For some - read one).

She doesn’t ever look comfortable in M’s presence to me.

I think the show would have been so much better if it has been about family and family recipes. Authenticity matters. Authentic family recipes talk to people. Feeds the soul.

The jury is out whether that was actually the likes of Jack in the box/takeaways or the farm to table experience recently touted.

It can be all be prettied up and made to look like a lifestyle to be aspired to.

It matters not if it is beautiful to look at for some. Even shite looks appealing to flies.

adragoncalledaudrey · 11/08/2026 12:27

No one is saying that William is saintly.

I feel most are saying he isn’t a whinging, man-baby cock.

If H had been born first? I would agree that he’d be a poster boy for the abolition of the monarchy.

So you are sort of half right.

Well done.

I think that you are trying to take away Meghan's agency with this.
however you feel about them she is as much to blame as anyone.

I’m not talking about from a genuine angle. I mean if I was working doing her PR, I would have advised to have her mum instead of random people who aren’t known as close friends..

@FrippEnos

Oh she brought her own special pie to the table for sure.

It is not unseen.

I do have a problem with her getting blamed for corrupting H, making him a hostage, being the cause of their downfall.

I think H was rotten early doors. Him being who he is isn’t her fault in my opinion.

That does not mean to say I think she is without blame. She is also rotten.

There is a scheming and focus there that is unparalleled.

I am undecided as to why she set her sights on him. Was she encouraged to? Gain access to one of the most famous families in the world through their most useful idiot?

Maybe fame was the spur?

I’m not convinced it was a love match at all.

From the start, her mouth was saying foxy foxy man. Her eyes were saying kill me now.

And so are his eyes now.

Welcome to the pleasure dome.

PotolKimchi · 11/08/2026 15:40

I'm very anti-monarchist and not white. Having said this, I think what the H&M saga has shown that it is not hard for a centuries old institution to outwit and outlast two relatively average wannabes.

The thing about William and Kate is that by their sheer position, and the passage of time, they will become more and more important. They will be invited into spaces and have influence without having to grift by virtue of who they are.
Harry and Meghan had they stayed in the RF could have had access to adjacent spaces by virtue of their position as the 'spare' and by association.

But in a moment of madness, blinded by celebrity they thought their sheer charismatic power (!) would enable them to access those same spaces and that level of privilege and wealth without the Royal Family. But now they find that they find the big events are closed off to them- they have never attended the Oscars or the Met Gala. They seem to hang out in the same circles- David Foster, the Netflix boss, and some of Meghan's female friends from Suits every few months to prove their 'relevance.' The friends on her Netflix show barely knew her- one didn't know her surname, and the makeup artist seems to have been ghosted apparently. They are not being invited to the Pope's funeral, to State banquets (even when Harry's own dad was in the US as a guest of the President), or to any international events. Meghan is giving speeches to almost no one at a Geneva roundabout.

So no they don't want obscurity. They wanted the headlines and the glamour without having to go a primary school in Leicester or to see a homeless shelter in Battersea. (And I'm not saying W&K are doing these outings because they are saints- but they understood is it is the contract for being Prince and Princess of Wales).
