The outpouring of criticism about them both has been enthralling & entertaining, but I really think it's time to just leave them alone. Let them get on with their lives and sink into relative obscurity, like Edward and Wallis Simpson. What do you think?

Newspaper and media only want to make money out of them.

And vice versa, it seems.

The person to "not forgive" from 30 years ago is Martin Bashir - he caused a lot of serious damage to a lot of people. It is also alleged that when Diana referred to "three of us in this marriage" she meant Tiggy, as Bashir had convinced her that Charles was having a whirl with Tiggy (plus a pregnancy and abortion).
I think Diana, Charles and Camilla all deserve both sympathy and empathy for the tough times they went through - like the rest of us, humans make mistakes. But I struggle with Bashir - it was blatant manipulation.

Absolutely agree with this.

Lets not forget that Bashir tried to do the same to Michael Jackson. No matter what you think of Jackson, the people around him were smart enough to have a second camera crew following them.

When Bashir released the finished documentary Jackson had the recording of what was actually said, not what it got twisted and edited into.
Jackson then released the real recording, it showed just how much it had been changed.

I’d love to hear your perspective on Harry and Meghan leaking details about a private meeting between KC staff and their own to Charlotte Griffiths. After it was covered in the Daily Mail due to their leak, they complained and blamed Buckingham palace staff.

Direct evidence that they are purposely courting the attention.

I would like to know what proof is there that she did leak details. One woman said it. It has not been backed up by anybody else at the dinner party. The whole of social media and the press jumped on this.

As the child of someone who married their affair partner, I can assure you I (and my siblings) have very much moved on. Because we’re adults, who understand relationships are complicated and some don’t work. What’s even more shocking is I actually love both my stepparents, even the one who was the affair partner. I didn’t for a long time but then like I said I grew up, realised my parents were both happy and ultimately that’s all that matters.

I’m assuming that the affair was not carried out in the full glare of the world’s media and your mother was not killed in appalling circumstances?

I can't believe you posted that.
Apart from anything else, Diana's death wasn't caused by C&C.... unless you actually think it was? 😲

I have no interest in them but the constant cruelty dished out to them evil. They have made mistakes, but they are only human. Newspaper and media only want to make money out of them.

So is it the newspapers and media that you think are being constantly cruel to them.

That’s a different matter and not really a big deal.

This is about a Daily Mail writer who reported that Harry and Meghan were feeding info directly to her recently, then they lied and said the Palace had leaked it.

She’s the same one that said Harry coerced her into taking a white pill to prove she was trustworthy.

Affairs. Diana also had many, so you’ll want to use the plural here.

Back to the current century though, still curious what you think about Charlotte Griffiths revelations.

Did you ever attend an event like she described attending with Harry - weekend soirée at some friend’s old pile? What do you think about the unknown white pill he gave her?

Are you referring to Southern California or to the US in general? 🤔

I was thinking of Hollywood itself .
Perhaps that was unfair. After I posted that comment, it occurred to me that it's also a place where there are lots of hugely talented people. When M&H announced their move there, I did have a sinking feeling for them both.

So you did mean for this to be yet another thread to attack them then?

No, that's why I used the word 'mercy' in the title of this thread. As CurlewKate said up thread, it's the hatred and vitriol which is so hard to understand. It's a fascinating real-life soap opera, but the gleeful scrutiny of absolutely everything they've said and posted online reminds me of 'The Crucible ' rather than Coronation Street. It feels to me like we're building up to some terrible crescendo.

Websites need them for clicks. They need the media to make money.
If they wanted to live privately they could. Look at people like Julia Roberts. I have no idea where she lives or what her kids look like.
You can also be in the limelight and still only use the media when you need to.
But with H&M it is a constant stream of pieces, usually in People magazine. A recent one was centred around how brave Lily is.
If they need the media, so be it. They chose to leave and if they want to make money via their titles and profiles that’s up to them.
But you can’t beat the band.
They don’t have a clear strategy. They’ve gone from the Oprah debacle/Spare to reconciliation rumours. Commercially they are all over the place.
I think they could have made more of their names but it would have taken a more streamlined vision. When you look at someone like Kylie Minogue and her wine, or Kim K’s Skims, there is money to be made.
You can’t use Instagram to sell and use images of your children, and then have a go at it and say it’s no good for kids.
Harry has been used to having everything done for him so I don’t think he has a strategy.
Meghan tries too hard and it shows. It leads to a disconnect. She would be far better off being a bit more open, rather than the same tired narratives around dish soap, Suits, being a female founder, I’m Sussex now.
Being ‘open’ in the way she has, has not worked. I think she thinks we need to be in awe of her to like her. We don’t. The first time most of us saw her we were intrigued and looking forward to getting to know her.
The best thing she could have done would have been to have her mum on her cooking show. Film cooking pieces from her own kitchen.
They don’t help themselves at times, and they know how it works. The media can be brutal, though.
Their biggest mistake in my mind wasn’t leaving, it was the vitriol toward Catherine which tarnished them. That was a low blow.
And don’t get me started on the Squad.

Agreed. And this feminist stance M keeps banging on about is entirely at odds with the trad-wife lifestyle branding & WLM. She's completely out of touch with the lives and struggles of ordinary women. The only 'voice' we hear is hers!

So not appalling circumstances at all. Right. Sorry, small boy. Your mum’s dead. Entirely her own fault. Now, the public are being a bit antsy about the way Granny’s been acting. Just come and have a look at all these flowers-read a card or two. England expects and all that.

adragoncalledaudrey · 11/08/2026 07:01

Just the one small boy?

There were two boys involved if I remember.

Appalling circumstances? Appalling for her children? Absolutely.

But it is likely the outcome would have been different if she had worn a seatbelt. I don’t think there is anything wrong in pointing that out.

Also, if I recall, their dad and granny tried to protect them until the public and TB started wailing.

But two boys endured that. Not just the one.

The white pill story is concerning, I agree.

As is his war kill count, his own admission that he hit his protection officer when drunk, the unexplained shooting of the two endangered hen harriers at Sandringham when only Harry and his friend were shooting that day. The bloody polo pony. All these things are deeply troubling and should be a big red flag.

Don’t be silly. She was killed by a drunk driver and not wearing a seatbelt. Those who died weren’t wearing a seatbelt and the one who lived was wearing one. Harry is a 40 plus year old man. He’s not 11 anymore so stop treating him like one.

I’m not talking about Harry. I’m talking about Diana’s children and the impact her death and its aftermath will have had on them. And the impact their growing knowledge of Charles and Camilla’s relationship will have had on them. However much Mumsnetters think they should have “grown out of it”

No-one is saying they should have "grown out of it". However, they should have come to terms with it, as middle aged men with wives and children of their own. This is where engaging with therapy, having a supportive partner and positive aims and goals in life can help.
Caroline Kennedy is a good case in point.

It wasn’t clear here. Which is why I commented.

H frequently seems to be thought of as the only victim of his mum dying. He was small but William was young too and arguably at one of the more difficult stages of a child’s life.

I can’t think why his grief is ignored because H is always the perpetual victim. So many have tragic events in their lives and don’t act like him.

Do I feel sorry for their loss? Yes.
Do I feel sorry for H? No. Not any more. He has access to counselling that some only dream of and still acts like a child. During his teenage years, his forces years and even now.

He has his own family, is financially comfortable and should be looking forward instead of always looking back and bemoaning his lot.
