Why a debate over what an apology should say ?? Is an apology that complicated?

Tiddlywinks63 · Today 12:08

BasiliskStare · Today 12:00

Well that would be a sort of having your cake and eating it apology in my view. If they want to do it , fine , but I hope it gets them no further into any public royal role.

Just how mealy-mouthed can this pair get? I can’t for one minute imagine it would be a genuine, contrite and honest apology, they’re confirmed liars, can’t be trusted one inch and are clearly only doing it to get $$$$ for their gluttonous lifestyle.
They’re obviously trying to crawl back into Charles’ good books, gloat about how they’re HIHO after all and exploit the situation for as much money as possible.
If this happens then it will show KC to be a fool.

Puzzledandpissedoff · Today 12:10

His next court fiasco is Sentabale. Be interesting to see who he pisses off then

Given that his accuser is black, @Starryfifty, and in light of the racism Harry's amply demonstrated, I'm interested to see if his mask will slip

That he'll resent one of the "little people" presuming to prosecute him is a given, and it's well seen that he finds it difficult to cope when put under pressure, so his reactions to any unwelcome questions will be worth watching

As others have said it may be better for him of Dr Chandauka agrees to settle, but there's no saying she'll want to do that

I do feel sorry for Harry's school experience. Going to an academically rigorous school like Eton because it was assumed best to keep him with William while they were still grieving. It's a shame Charles hated Gordonstone so much because it looks like that rugged outdoor type school would have been a better fit for Harry. Peter and Zara seem to have enjoyed their time there.

Wasn't Harry originally meant to go to a different school because he failed the Eton entrance exams so badly? (IIRC he was meant to go to Radley). But Charles changed his mind after Diana's death as it suited Charles' purposes to have them at the same school so that he could focus on rehabilitating Camilla's image (they appeared in public together less than 18 months after Diana's death).

But he thereby lumbered the then 16 year old William with the responsibility of "looking after" the increasingly troubled 14 year old Harry. Eton caved to the public (and royal pressure) to keep "the young princes" together.

Sounds like it is going to be the type of apology that is drafted by a committee of PR teams and lawyers of the "sorry if you were offended" type 🙄

Just imagine if you had fallen out with your remaining parent, slagged them off repeatedly in public then leaked to the press that you were considering apologising. And clearly thinking of issuing a sorry not sorry apology.

It really takes the biscuit.

Scorchio84 · Today 12:23

It really does @NormalAuntFanny just when I think they cannot possibly surprise me again.. well! More fool me but then I suppose that's why I'm here 😂

Word is, H is desperate to settle and case will fall around same time as Ingriftus. I really hope Dr Sophie stands her ground.

Another reason why welcoming this toxic pair back is a very bad idea. I think this court case could cause irreparable damage to HAM, however, they always seem to bounce back

I know. They seriously need to keep quiet

BasiliskStare · Today 12:37

I've never really bought into the "they're desperate" story (partly because it's beyond me how they could have burnt through so much money so quickly. ) However , this makes me not so sure.

If they are doing it for private reconciliation , apologise privately , don't leak it. And leaking that you're thinking of making an apology - well ...

Note - I use the word apology in this context as shorthand for " insincere performative self-serving cynical non-apology. "

I say - Cry "Harry" and let slip the MIGS of Charles.

Starryfifty · Today 12:47

Whatever happened to Meg's venture into politics?

SqueakyDinosaur · Today 12:48

Starryfifty · Today 11:59

And here's the kicker 🤔

That potential apology is couched in SUCH pass-agg terms - "the last five years have caused enormous pain". NO. Over the last five years, YOU have caused enormous pain TO YOUR FAMILIES, H&M. Passive voice won't wash here.

(on a purely grammatical level I have always wondered why nobody picked up during Kate's PhotoshopGate incident that her statement doesn't actually say that she doctored THAT photo, just that she has experimented with photoshopping in general)

That feels like an unnecessarily uncharitable interpretation of Charles' actions. Yes, he was determined to rehabilitate Camilla, but I would imagine that trying to support his sons, especially Harry, who really was a child, would have been his primary motive. And because nobody was probably blunt with Harry's parents about his academic limitations, it would have taken a while for them to play out and to reveal how disastrous Eton really was for him. It must have been very hard to be the thickest boy in the school, and I'm sure he knew it.

I think it's in Tina Brown's Diana book that she is reported to have said that she wanted Harry to go to Eton too, as her brother and father had as well as William, "because otherwise people will think he's a thicko".

Scorchio84 · Today 12:57

Didn't that article also say "..no one wants to go over everything that's happened over the past five years" or some shit? 😂

If you've made a mistake, Lunde, then I've made the same one ... and didn't Harry once whine (in Spare, I think) that William hadn't paid enough attention to him at Eton?

I get the motivation if they really did want to keep both boys "together" after losing their mum, but sending Harry to an academic hotbed was never going to be a good idea - and especially not for Harry himself, condemned to always be the less clever one in the class

Frankly I thought getting royals into top schools on totally inadequate qualifications ended with the previous generation, but clearly not

I do think that there was a genuine case for thinking that Harry would be better off being close to home, and at school with his brother. No-one would necessarily have known that he would struggle so much with the academics - thinking here of DS who suddenly switched on at 13, having been a very middling student beforehand!

I also think it's pretty cynical to align the choice of school with Camilla's rehabilitation - I really can't think that a father would have put anything above the wellbeing of his young son, who has just lost his mother. Maybe I'm just being naive!

BillyBites · Today 13:08

A genuine apology would not need to be “considered” —and leaked— in advance.
Ffs, is there no end to this pair. Why won’t they just go away and be quiet.

Firstly, it’s too late for apologies. Come to think about it, 5 minutes after the accusations and whinges of racism/ generational hurt/ wearing tights/having to curtsey or whatever would have been too late. The pair of them should have kept their gobs shut in the first place and thus had nothing to apologise for. And wasn’t Harry wanting an apology from the royals when he said during the OW interview that “they know what they did”?
With regard to Harry’s education, it is clear now that Eton did not suit him. But I am at a loss to know what would have suited him. He has shown us himself what an arrogant twit he is and apparently always was, and I reckon would have been a difficult pupil needing his academic failings covered up wherever he went.

Both Charles and especially Diana were aware that H had academic challenges and were certainly aware that H failed the entrance exams.

But, IMHO, both parents failed H well before the Eton entrance exam. Diana is on record as saying that she kept H home from primary school to watch movies with her. And that truancy would have meant that H skipped foundational classes. A child of middling intellect with high truancy is a recipe for academic disaster.

Moreover, Charles could have gotten H private instruction for a year before sending him off to high school. Yes, he'd be a year behind his age group and yes, Charles would have to focus on H and slow track "operation rehab Camilla" but Diana's death would have ensured no one would loudly question H's "break" from school and it would have been transformative for H...IMHO, of course.

Ahh...the what ifs!

I would hazard a guess that plenty of us here have had challenging childhoods. I remember watching Dr Raj Persuad discussing Harry. I am paraphrasing but he said we all need to find our peace and try to carve a life for ourselves. H hasn't and just doesn't seem capable. Yes, it was a shit decision to send him to Eton but he's so monumentally dim, he may well have struggled elsewhere. I don't believe William is a natural genius but he worked hard and had determination

JSMill · Today 13:44

To be fair, most parents get things wrong. I certainly did! I know that being in a setting where you really struggle to keep up has a negative effect on your self esteem and it probably did for H.
