I'm on the fence too. But my main point is that, outside of royal watchers like ourselves, very few people care about how much 'work' William does or does not do. So the republicans are going to have to come up with better arguments if they're hoping to make any progress in their cause. So far they have failed to do so.

Yes absolutely agree about the need for better, or clearer Republican points.

I think the argument about workshy William but also working on the Duchy is that the view is he’s “paid” to do the job of Prince of wales, and managing the duchy /making money should be something he fits round his full time job as PofW.

As I understand it, he is also legally required, under the Duchy of Cornwall Management Acts, to maintain the Duchy in the best possible state for future heirs.

Yes the Duchy of Cornwall is part of his job as Prince of Wales, it's his estate whilst in that position and he has a responsibility to manage it apropriately and sage guard it for future generations. Saying he shouldn't give it time is like saying the Earl of Carnavon should stop spending time on the Highclere Castle and estate. It's part of a Duke or Earl's job.

MrsLeonFarrell · 21/06/2026 14:13

Incidentally i think the mean comment about Edward demeans Norman Baker. Edward and Sophie represent the monarch well, support important cherries and projects and rarely get publicity or praise. They quietly get on with it, that isn't boring, it's dury.

bluegreygreen · 21/06/2026 14:20

Agree.

Edward has represented the monarch abroad for years and will be well-known and respected when he goes abroad for that (as well as his charity work).

I do think it was a horrible comment.

(Love the idea of important cherries.)

I was ignoring the cherries! 🍒, the reason Edward and Sophie are sold short, is exactly the same reason we have the “lazy “ William narrative! , the media do not cover all the things they are doing 🤷‍♀️ , and believe it or not but when this was pointed out and proof was provided, it was actually waved away with a “ if we have not seen or read about it , it didn’t happen!”

The phrase pro Sussex republican is a funny one - I know who you mean but 2 mins thought should tell them that getting rid of the RF would be a disaster for H+M and not what they want at all. I’m sure the Waleses would be fine, maybe it would even be preferable to them to just manage the duchy and invest in their projects with much less attention and the possibility of a normal life for their DC. The rest of the working royals I’m sure would be happy to retire. Can’t see that it would make much difference to the UK based non working royals. The whole institution could gracefully fade away. But the Sussexes would be screwed without it, they have nothing else beyond a failing jam business.

There have been many a reluctant monarch, I am sure, George VI being very much a recent example of someone putting duty and country first above personal health and happiness. Perhaps William will bring about the sort of slow fade you describe, but I think a more low key European model is likely over wholesale, constitutional upheaval.

The Sussexes represent all the worst of what republicans profess to despise. They expect all the titles, deference, preferential opportunities, freedom from criticism, freedom from financial scrutiny and tax payer funded perks, without any of the duty or responsibility to the UK. Without all of those trappings, they really are just a pair of aging losers.

I don't often comment on these threads but I read them diligently and appreciate all your comments and insights!

My only thought right now is A&L having a meeting with Charles... Are they going to bow/curtsy? They haven't grown up in that environment, seeing their parents and others doing so, understanding when and to whom. So, they go in to meet "Grandpa" and...? Will MM teach them how to bow/curtsy? It seems H won't bother, much as he did for MM with HMTLQ.

It'll just be really strange for them, not just meeting a grandparent you don't know but then having to understand that you need to bow/curtsy. And not having seen (or remember seeing) your parents show that deference so nothing to go off.

Nobody has to bow or curtsey.
Meghan made a meal of it, exaggerated nonsense.

And ‘Republic’ are so hopeless that at this point in time one wonders if they are MI5 plants to put people off the idea.

I think that in democratic terms the UK should be a republic one day but let’s look at some models that work well first, and debate how best to keep the finest British ceremonial traditions and historic calendars, values and ideas, while avoiding the pitfalls. It should be a healthy discussion about the possible future, not an embarrassing bedlam of people booing at children.

'A Question of Attribution' is running on BBC iplayer. It's a fictionalised account of a meeting between HMTLQ & Anthony Blunt. Prunella Scales acts QE & James Fox as Anthony Blunt. The screenplay was written by Alan Bennett is chefs kiss as you can imagine.
Don't miss it- ive waited years to watch it again. A real treat.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve just watched it. Quite a poignant conversation between QEII and Blunt, especially as in real life she almost certainly knew he had been a Soviet spy. Some while ago I read “Spying and the Crown” by Richard Aldrich and Rory Cormac. By all accounts, the Palace knew a good deal more then they let on, and I doubt it’s any different now. (MI5 and MI6 are crown servants, rather than civil servants.) I suspect that Charles, and possibly William, know a great deal about what’s going on in the Sussexes’ lives.

I can see the DM headline now.
From MIGs to MI6. Why Harry can never safely return to the UK
A source has revealed that the real reason the Prince had recently, yet again, cancelled his young family's trip to his ailing father, is the ongoing rumours of his being tracked by MI6. This is believed to be especially galling to the new father, because whilst the UK will pay for him to be followed by those with Licences to Kill, the UK constantly refuses to pay for his armed security. Leaving the Prince forced to pay for his own family from his own pocket.

Must admit, it's very hard not head into Private Eye territory...
Edit for typo

noonames · 21/06/2026 15:31

Oh yes - “this has William’s fingerprints all over it. He’s somehow managed to push Harry out and manoeuvre himself to be the heir. Now he’ll do anything to protect his position, knowing full well that Harry would be the better PoW and Meghan is much more popular and better at being royal than William’s non-huggy wife blah blah blah”

Was he not annoyed that there was no role for Archie at KC’s Coronation? I seem to recall something but can’t remember where I saw it !

Wasn't there something about Harry expecting them to sing Happy Birthday to Archie at the coronation because they had the affrontery to hold a constitutional event on a 4 year old's birthday! Then Harry got in a huff because there was no special recognition for his child (who didn't even come to the UK).

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/06/2026 15:41

jeffgoldblum · 21/06/2026 13:40

In my opinion, the likelihood of Meghan and the children coming is extremely slim, this is just the usual “ will they , won’t they “ we are treated to every summer without fail! , it’s only ramped up this year because of invictus Birmingham, Harry has to come, I have my doubts that the games themselves will actually happen at this point 🤷‍♀️

In view of the overall mess it might be better if these games didn't happen, jeff - and I'm not just referring to Harry's idiocies

I agree though that what we're seeing is more media clickbait, and if Meghan doesn't come with the kids they'll simply move onto the next batch of silly invention

Edited to add I honestly don't remember Harry mentioning any role for Archie at the coronation, @Mylovelygreendress; I don't even recall it being discussed on here, so maybe it was just another rumour?

If presented with a coherent, well thought out plan, plus a sensible transition, I would be far more likely to consider a change. At the moment nothing I hear convinced me its better than a constitutional monarchy (assuming politicians actually live up to their roles which they don't always).

I agree, it should be cancelled, Birmingham can’t afford it ( the money should have been spent on bin collections or sorting out the council!) , the U.K. cannot afford to waste taxpayers money on a vanity project for Harry when actual veterans and people cannot afford to eat or home themselves.

Oh, okay. I have seen Charlotte do it as a younger child.
It'll be strange for them all the same to have their mum and dad showing deference. I can imagine they'll have lots of questions about the why and wherefore.

Given that Meghan expects people to curtsy to her and call her ma’am , I think the DC will understand about bowing/ curtsying!

Knowing the Sussexes, they will have the complete expectation of bowing and curtseying to them and the children.

I do think W needs to keep an eye on the "workshy" epithet. However , just at the moment he has a young family & I suspect trying to bring them up with a more normal and balanced upbringing that his family has had up until now, so I for one give him a bit of a by for the time being. The other thing is, no matter how rich he is , this job is for life , so he can't look forward to an early retirement. As and when the children are older , perhaps all in Big School / university - whatever - and more independent he might ramp up his engagements a bit ,as may Catherine , health permitting.

Exactly this. Especially relevant when you remember the loud criticism of the parenting approaches of the past two generations.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 21/06/2026 16:46

Indianrollerbird · 21/06/2026 13:12

Is “Workshy William and Complicated Catherine are responsible for underemployed royal journalists” a new SS/republican talking point? Those poor hacks. It’s someone else’s fault (William’s of course) that they have no journalistic integrity and regularly ignore the activities of working royals like Sophie doing fantastic work on DV around the world. Of course, Harry and Meghan would never stoop to courting and briefing the gutter press all year round in order to keep themselves relevant, and keep their one sided feud and petty pity party in the news. It’s all William and Catherine’s fault for not getting in on the drama and just carrying out their duties without engaging with the cretins from California. Damn them for going on holiday when their kids are off school! Does everybody hear it: IT’S WILLIAM’ S FAULT FOR BEING NORMAL! GOD SAVE HARRY AND MEGHAN FOR KEEPING THE ROYAL ROTA FROM BOREDOM!

I didn’t mean it as that - more that if you are going to read articles like that one in the Daily Mail, you can’t just take it as face value and fail to factor in the selfishness of the Royal press pack when writing and commissioning articles like that.

There’s an agenda around getting William to do more public engagements and to do public engagements over the summer, when there’s little other news, and its not because the public are keen to see him, it’s because they need to justify their jobs existing.
