If a woman wrote that, she'd be called "bitchy".

It is bitchy. All they have is personal attacks, most of which can be countered. There are few elected politicians who have ended up in high office who can be held up as “better” people (by whatever value they are using against the RG at any given time), yet we are supposed to feel grateful because we elect them - in a system where the public has very little input, sway or control over the candidates put forward, or in how they lie to get into office before back peddling once elected, and we are stuck for 5 years. Not to mention the extremely important matter that you can never get republicans to cost up the process and confirm we would be saving money. I suspect they can’t, which is why they resort to booing children and bitching about quiet men and women of service.

They always just sound envious when they come out with this sort of remark, and I always think of Animal Farm whenever I hear them.

The thing about saying lazy is that you have to say why you think that. You generally that is.

Do you use the number of engagements in the Court Circular? Do you look at social media posts to see what's going on? So you find out about meetings that happen behind the scenes (as in the Duchy comments). Whatever data you gather do you then compare royals to royals or to other professions?

It's easy to call someone lazy, but I think it's not really fair unless you define your terms and make it clear what you mean by hard working.

William does fewer public engagements than Anne. They are however working in styles that belong to different royal models and eras. We also don't know what they do that we don't see. I'm on the fence about it.

I'm on the fence too. But my main point is that, outside of royal watchers like ourselves, very few people care about how much 'work' William does or does not do. So the republicans are going to have to come up with better arguments if they're hoping to make any progress in their cause. So far they have failed to do so.

Very true! It's seething with resentment, isn't it? Hardly an intelligent discussion.

I don’t know if you caught the Sun’s royal
podcast the other day (can’t remember what it’s called), but they had Graham Smith on trying to justify Republic’s booing of the Wales children. It was very clear to me from whom/where the pro Sussex republicans who litter these boards receive their talking points.

The phrase pro Sussex republican is a funny one - I know who you mean but 2 mins thought should tell them that getting rid of the RF would be a disaster for H+M and not what they want at all. I’m sure the Waleses would be fine, maybe it would even be preferable to them to just manage the duchy and invest in their projects with much less attention and the possibility of a normal life for their DC. The rest of the working royals I’m sure would be happy to retire. Can’t see that it would make much difference to the UK based non working royals. The whole institution could gracefully fade away. But the Sussexes would be screwed without it, they have nothing else beyond a failing jam business.

I can't believe KC won't leave him a huge inheritance (not from the duchy) I could be wrong😅

I think you are (sorry!)
Monarch to monarch is transferred IHT free.
From my understanding the monarch -let’s say QEII- set up generous trusts for her children (excluding Charles who had the Duchy of Cornwall) during her lifetime. She bought Anne Gatcombe, Andrew Sunninghill &paid the long lease on Bagshot for Edward.
If she had left millions to Anne, Edward & Andrew this would be subject to IHT.
I know monarchs wills are sealed but are IHT payments subject to FOI requests? If they were then people could work out how much had been left to each one. I think this is why Bea, Eugenie, the Kent’s, The Gloucesters all live in Royal palaces as the monarch pays their rent- this is a way of giving them money without leaving them cash and opening up IHT payments.

We KNOW that Andrew didn’t get a massive legacy from QEII as he would have spent it on royal lodge , not sold the chalet etc.
So, I don’t think -especially in light of how they have both behaved -that Harry will be in line for a large inheritance when his father dies which could be grabbed by Meghan in a divorce. It will be in a trust bound irrevocably.
Look at how ‘impoverished’ (in royal terms) the Kents and the Gloucesters are - Barnwell Manor, Coppins, Nether Lypitt - all had to be sold. No money t9 keep them.
(When the Wales children are married with children Harry will have less relevance than the Gloucesters & Kents as he will not have been a working royal for decades.)
The Kents have sold off much of the jewellry Princess Marina recived as wedding presents -some of it important pieces too.
The Gloucesters have managed to hang onto their jewellry but I suspect that we will see the majority of it go to auction when the current Duke & Duchess dies to pay the IHT on the estate.
They had to pay double IHT when Prince William (1972]died then Harry, Duke of Gloucester [1974] as Harry & Alice had transferred Barnwell to William when Harry had a stroke. They could never have expected William their eldest son & heir to die before his father.

It makes me laugh - could there be anyone more entitled, arrogant and so concerned with Royal titles than the Sussexes?!
Republican they are not.

I think the argument about workshy William but also working on the Duchy is that the view is he’s “paid” to do the job of Prince of wales, and managing the duchy /making money should be something he fits round his full time job as PofW.

But more, that royal correspondents are increasingly trying to justify their own careers! You’ve got only William and Catherine as working royals in their generation, and if they only work very part time in their public roles, why would newspapers bother have a dedicated royal correspondent? If royal stories can be easily picked up by the political or celebrity journalists (because there’s not much to say regularly), there’s no need to have a dedicated team.

This is why this summer, the Harry and Meghan drama will get full coverage, it coincides with the time that William and Catherine will disappear from public view so it’ll give the royal journalists something to write about. It’s a gift! Who cares if it’s all bollocks, they can get column inches out of that bollocks and if William doesn’t like it, then he should do what the press really want- a royal tour somewhere fun with Catherine taking a vast array of lovely dresses so the press pack can have a holiday on expenses going to cover it!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/06/2026 11:02

I agree completely, Rhaidimiddim, not least because it would hardly be fair on the children

No doubt Harry would love them being "excluded" though ... the accusations he could fling are all too predictable Hmm

Was he not annoyed that there was no role for Archie at KC’s Coronation? I seem to recall something but can’t remember where I saw it !

As I understand it, he is also legally required, under the Duchy of Cornwall Management Acts, to maintain the Duchy in the best possible state for future heirs.

Indianrollerbird · 21/06/2026 13:12

Is “Workshy William and Complicated Catherine are responsible for underemployed royal journalists” a new SS/republican talking point? Those poor hacks. It’s someone else’s fault (William’s of course) that they have no journalistic integrity and regularly ignore the activities of working royals like Sophie doing fantastic work on DV around the world. Of course, Harry and Meghan would never stoop to courting and briefing the gutter press all year round in order to keep themselves relevant, and keep their one sided feud and petty pity party in the news. It’s all William and Catherine’s fault for not getting in on the drama and just carrying out their duties without engaging with the cretins from California. Damn them for going on holiday when their kids are off school! Does everybody hear it: IT’S WILLIAM’ S FAULT FOR BEING NORMAL! GOD SAVE HARRY AND MEGHAN FOR KEEPING THE ROYAL ROTA FROM BOREDOM!

Oh lord, he's bloody awful, but letting him speak it all out loud on broadcasts is probably the best way to get rid of him, as with most obnoxious types and whack-a-loons.

BasiliskStare · 21/06/2026 13:29

I do think W needs to keep an eye on the "workshy" epithet. However , just at the moment he has a young family & I suspect trying to bring them up with a more normal and balanced upbringing that his family has had up until now, so I for one give him a bit of a by for the time being. The other thing is, no matter how rich he is , this job is for life , so he can't look forward to an early retirement. As and when the children are older , perhaps all in Big School / university - whatever - and more independent he might ramp up his engagements a bit ,as may Catherine , health permitting.

I don't often comment on these threads but I read them diligently and appreciate all your comments and insights!

My only thought right now is A&L having a meeting with Charles... Are they going to bow/curtsy? They haven't grown up in that environment, seeing their parents and others doing so, understanding when and to whom. So, they go in to meet "Grandpa" and...? Will MM teach them how to bow/curtsy? It seems H won't bother, much as he did for MM with HMTLQ.

It'll just be really strange for them, not just meeting a grandparent you don't know but then having to understand that you need to bow/curtsy. And not having seen (or remember seeing) your parents show that deference so nothing to go off.

I really don't think young children 'have to' bow or curtsey. I've never seen the Wales children do it. Certainly nobody would expect it of the Sussex kids, if the meeting happens at all.

Thanks for this. I recall QEII offered to buy them an country house estate as a wedding present but they turned her down. Frogmore was what they got instead but they had no ownership rights. They've made such a series of bad decisions which have resulted in their current poor financial position. Clearly, PH didn't pay any attention to the other royal dukes and their precarious finances. Without a large estate, they have no financial security.

Oh, okay. I have seen Charlotte do it as a younger child.
It'll be strange for them all the same to have their mum and dad showing deference. I can imagine they'll have lots of questions about the why and wherefore.

jeffgoldblum · 21/06/2026 13:40

In my opinion, the likelihood of Meghan and the children coming is extremely slim, this is just the usual “ will they , won’t they “ we are treated to every summer without fail! , it’s only ramped up this year because of invictus Birmingham, Harry has to come, I have my doubts that the games themselves will actually happen at this point 🤷‍♀️

Isn't Edward 11th in line and Princess Anne 14th..? So the article is both bitchy and inaccurate.

Apologies, I forgot the York girls had reproduced. Prince Edward is 15th. So the article is still inaccurate.

How can Harry maintain a large estate if he can't even maintain the house in Montecito? He can't manage money.

Starryfifty · 21/06/2026 00:09

I can't believe KC won't leave him a huge inheritance (not from the duchy) I could be wrong😅

The way that Royal inheritance works is the the monarch leaves everything to the next monarch and that the new monarch "looks after" the family financially.

It is actually how Charles managed to push AMW out because AMW was dependent on his allowance from the King but used none of it to maintain his property.

There may be some trust funds from earlier generations - like the Queen Mother left £11-12 million to Harry.

The RF have use of a lot of assets but don't own many of them.
