Can’t see a new thread so thought I would start a new one to continue discussing the grifters

I think, if they come, the press will treat them favourably and try and sway public opinion. It is very much in the interest of the press to create a welcoming atmosphere. This is, of course, only for the benefit of the press... many, many easy articles to churn out if they are in this country, endless speculation about family relationships, clothes etc. I sincerely hope they don't come back and don't get welcomed back. Their behaviour towards this country has been disgraceful.

I agree, Harry will be at the centre of the funeral and will be in total control of the MIGS of that I have no doubt. What will be interesting in this scenario is will Archie and Lily stand guard as the grandchildren of the monarch as the Queen’s grandchildren did when she was lying in state? If they have built a relationship with King Charles before he dies I presume it will happen, if they haven’t, how would the MIGS deal with that (I’m going on the assumption that the children will be teenagers when this happens)

Oh I doubt that H's children will have a role in the ceremonials, whatever their age. They are an unknown quantity, and the institution surrounding the Head of State would not risk placing teenagers of unknown temperament and unfamiliar with British traditionals in a prominent role.

BemusedAmerican · 20/06/2026 20:54

The kids are Americans. They may not want to be hauled off to a strange country to stand vigil over a grandfather they never met.

I think MM being a born hustler will survive,

Is she really a 'hustler' though?

She had global fame, prestige, popularity and lucrative deals thrown in her lap just a few years ago.

Now she's selling matches on the internet.

Not much of a hustle.

She bagged a Prince - she did well hustling up- she just didn't know how to behave when she got to the nearly top spot.

M will move on but PH has burnt all his bridges

If they did split H would come home and the MIGS would slowly rehabilitate his image.

Right, decided now was a good time to start Tom Bower's Betrayal. Not far in and have just reached this gem, where Megan goes to discuss her coat of arms with the principal at the College of Arms:

Woodcock's task was to prevent any embarrassments but Meghan's request was unprecedented. Convinced that she had been created a duchess in her own right, unrelated to Harry being the duke, she told Woodcock: 'I want on the coat of arms a songbird with its tongue cut out'. Woodcock was flummoxed. Any hint of nostalgia was quashed by her moral certitude. The Duchess eventually agreed to a nightingale, but without the image of it being forcibly silenced.

GirlsInGreen · 20/06/2026 21:23

I think the last couple of years have really seen PW grow comfortable in his own skin & grow into the role his has had the (mis)fortune to be born too.
I think when you go through something as life rupturing as a loved one/s serious health diagnosis, things either fall apart or you step up. He's gained gravitas & ease. I think he'll be more than comfortable as K. I don't think there's any way a rapproachement with his brother is on the cards.
He'll know the monarchy rode out an abidication of a nazi sympathiser - it can easily do the same with the Sussex family.

"She has notions"😂 as my dear old mum would say.

I agree. He’s seen Catherine overcome cancer, and face down one of the most egregious online hate campaigns ever waged. Their kids seem to be thriving; and they have come through an awful period (thanks to Harry’s betrayal , Andrew’s disgusting revelations, his father’s cancer and the deaths of his grandparents) looking stronger than ever. I am convinced that, despite the trouble Harry has caused, William is 100% happier for not having to feel responsible for him or having to always factor Harry’s future prospects and numerous issues into his life, and that is reflected in his demeanour.

Agree.

We know a lot of the Sussex behaviour from their public words and actions.

Can you imagine what it must have been like in private, especially in the year or so leading up to up to the split?

Someone else may have mentioned this today, but just noticed Tom Bowers book 'betrayal' kindle version is 99p on amazon.
And now to catch up with the thread! Best bedtime reading!

Oh I think Catherine is more ‘normal’ -I just meant that when Camilla married in she was at that point the most normal background person to marry in to a high ranked member.

Off on a tangent -lovely article about The Duchess of Gloucester who has been an excellent example of how ‘normal’ marrying in works - and how these normal women have backbone and duty in bucketloads.
She shows how it should be done. I covert her pearl & cabochon emerald necklace.

Sophie was a very normal, middle class lady when age married Prince Edward, wasn't she?

BasiliskStare · 20/06/2026 22:16

I think at the moment there's no point in speculating on any royal role for A&L , no matter how brief , because at the moment H doesn't have a royal role. & I can't see how KC3 or W would trust him with one.

Personally, long may it continue. Sophie made some missteps early doors ( as did Edward) I reckon it's taken them , what , 20 - 25 years to get back to being trusted members of the WRF. & their missteps weren't in the same league as H&M's.

I don't think M understood the WRF , Gordon Bennett I scarcely think H did. & I suspect they just might be learning to their cost now. "Plan A didn't work , what do we have as Plan B whilst making it look like it was always our Plan A" I wonder if Captain Wales has ever looked up "scorched earth policy" .😊

If they split it won’t be until Charles dies, Harry will then be completely out in the cold, the money tree will have dried up so he won’t be of any use to Meghan, she will move on. As for Harry, no rehabilitation will be required, he will just be the approaching 60 year old brother who is surplus to requirements, who needs Harry when we have a popular King and Queen and there 3 attractive young adult children who will be forming relationships of their own, the crown moves on, and Harry isn’t and will never be part of it, he’s finished once William is King.

I agree.

I wouldn't want to risk building a bond with a small child that could be used at a later point to extort me. For my sake, but more so to spare the child.

Charles is not even a retired grandparent. He works full time.

He has 3 grandchildren he sees regularly (& is clearly close to), several great nieces & nephews, plus he is close to Camilla's grandchildren.

To be blunt - while he I'm sure regrets the distance and lack of contact, it's not like he's alone. He was never ever going to be a hands on grandfather doing holiday care, sleepovers and after-school pick ups.

I'm aware that sounds harsh, and I don't mean it to be, but Charles is in a very different position than Thomas Markle. I feel for both of them frankly - for different reasons.

Charles is 80, horrible to say, but I doubt that, other than George and Charlotte, his grandchildren will be teenagers at his funeral.

It was different for QE2 - other than Louise and James who were older teens, all her grandchildren were adults.

I don't think we'll see the same vigil for Charles with the grandchildren.

And this was well before the wedding, when she'd only been in the UK a short time - but the narrative about being silenced was clearly already under construction.

There's also something very Hunger Gamesy about it, to me. Utterly crass.

I don't think H ever thinks long terms. He'll assume he'll be welcome back in the fold and fully supported when he's divorced. There's absolutely no way this man can function alone and especially in the US

BasiliskStare · 20/06/2026 23:06

Just every so often I think , The hubris of Harry. (Actually I reckon I could work that up into a 2 part documentary - anyone up for helping? 😂 P(erhaps we could get a few quid from Netflix - or Channel 5. ) Seriously - he takes himself and his importance way too seriously and the stories proliferate - but when you think from where they've gone in 8 years to now , where will they really be in 8 years time. Begging for handouts from KC which they could have had quite genuinely had they decided to work on behalf of the WRF. Badly done , Harry.

It is almost Shakespearean. I reckon H will be showing his cicatrices in the marketplace before long - he actually almost does that now.

I think the same type of vigil is unlikely for several reasons.

One reason in particular, if the grandchildren are teenage or younger, is the amount of public complaint that Harry has made over taking public part in his mother's funeral.

I can imagine that anyone organising things at that point will want to avoid any opportunity for further complaint - whether about children being included or excluded.

He'll know the monarchy rode out an abidication of a nazi sympathiser - it can easily do the same with the Sussex family.

I think we’ve already seen a hugely different and more modern/approachable monarchy, following the Queen’s death, and William will take it further still I’m sure.

Charles has, to my mind, filled the role he waited so long for beautifully, and appears to be mostly thoroughly embracing and enjoying it.

Especially with a mother whispering bile in their ears.

ShamedBySiri · 20/06/2026 23:29

The numbers worked neatly for vigil for The Queen, four children, eight grandchildren.
The numbers won't work so conveniently for Charles.
It's not the only reason, but I doubt there will be a lying in state with vigil from descendants for Charles when the time comes, which I hope will be some years hence.
