Eh? Damian and what bloke?
I think Mother Teresa died at the same time.

Bloody autocorrect.

DIANA. Obviously. 😓

SqueakyDinosaur · 04/06/2026 14:57

I was on holiday in the South of France when Diana died. I remember we went into St Tropez in the evening and one of the very posh swimwear shops had draped black fabric round all its window displays. And when I came back to London, I went to Kensington Palace to see the flowers and it was just a really extraordinary atmosphere - the smell of decaying flowers, candles everywhere and loads of people sobbing and wailing. It felt quite medieval.

Agree, @MrsLeonFarrell.

I have read from at least one PR person on here, and have heard elsewhere, that the early Sunday papers were withdrawn in a hurry that morning, as they were very critical of Diana.

(As an aside - imagine that being able to happen these days, in the era of social media news!)

Some papers were already in circulation and one writer ( Linda Lee Potter?) had to issue an apology as she ( or whoever it was) had written a very critical article about Diana and her behaviour.

There was a lot of criticism of Diana that summer. She spent a lot of time on a yacht with her boyfriend and not much time with her sons, who were both on holiday from boarding school.

Allegedly Charles Spencer took a day out from his honeymoon to visit Montecito (wonder if took a private jet). If he did I suspect it was to pour cold water in their plans for a documentary about Diana and let them know there would be no Spencer cooperation or access to archives etc.

I wonder if Meghan made some scones for tea….

I am being drawn to believe the essence of this report - in that if Earl Spencer did come to visit Monteshitshow for a social visit MM would have spun and rinsed that through her IG account. Looks like they have got their wrists slapped and another door slammed in their faces due to their greedy grifting. Appalling if true that the doc was more about MM that Diana?

BasiliskStare · 04/06/2026 15:10

DH got up to read the papers that Sunday morning. It was not until he put the radio on he realised what had happened. He reads the sports pages first 😊

He completely missed the passing of this Damian fella though 😂

Diana was certainly losing public support following her affairs with Oliver Hoare and Will Carling ( both married).

Yes, you're right. She was nowhere near the saint she later became.

I saw something recently that the Sussexes want their proposed Diana documentary to frame Meghan's illustrious life of jam and faux feminism as the continuation of her legacy. I really hope they do this, as the fall out will be hilarious.

In any event, Andrew Morton and a co conspirator are doing their own documentary based around some tapes they possess of unheard interviews with Diana, which sounds much more interesting than the hackneyed narrative we've heard from Harry time and time again.

Prince William, Harry and Princess Diana sat next to each other smiling ahead.

Unheard Princess Diana audio tapes to air as part of new documentary series

The series will "challenge the reductive narrative that has too often framed Diana as a victim of her circumstances".

And here we are speculating on whether Lili is the preferred child. Or whether Archie's not as commodifiable, and it is Meghan and Harry's fault their children are being scrutinised like this.

They had the opportunity to remove them from public life and instead they chose to use them publicly to boost their own image.

How do Archie and Lili benefit from being on social media? They don't. They only lose.

Their mother benefits.

These photos are for Meghan and Harry's interests not the children's. And that makes me quite sick.

They are being exploitative shit parents putting themselves above their children.

They had the opportunity to remove them from public life and instead they chose to use them publicly to boost their own image.

Absolutely. These children could have grown up in complete privacy. How often do we see Eugenie or Beatrice's children? Pretty much never. And they're the valid comparison, not the Wales children who do have a role in British public life.

And I'm not even sure that releasing photos of the kids do 'boost' their parents' image. The photos are so soulless and the back of the head thing is borderline creepy, not to mention hypocritical. The photo of Lili kneeling on the ground while Meghan prepared to jet off without her yet again was a new low. They'd be much better off not showing the kids at all as they’re not fooling anything with this back of the head nonsense. They might get some respect for that, and that's something they badly need.

StrawberryWasp · 04/06/2026 13:17

It's weird to realise this isn't it?

My kids (20's) barely know anything about her and really don't care.

She was so iconic for us over 50's it's hard to appreciate this.

And it's not like old bands, or music, or films which can get cool cult status with a younger generation: there are no Princess Di T shirts or posters on the walls of uni kids.

She has no ongoing cultural influence. I think the last of that was Harry's wedding when those of us who remembered her thought 'Diana's boy is getting married' Beyond that no one cares anymore.

She's just the dead mother of Prince William. The interest is going to be in Williams kids as they become adults, not in his mother.

We've told our kids about her. The AIDS stuff - good, manipulating the media - bad, how she died (no seatbelt, drunk driver) and it became a crazy media circus and that she was basically canonised, but that an actual saint died the following day/week and it was barely remarked upon.
But they have no interest in her.
I think the people who might have cared longterm are mostly dead by now. People in their 80s and younger saw through the media manipulation (in retrospect if not at the time).

Plus, in spite of certain wild claims on the previous thread, the name Lilibet is both very uncommon and very identifiable.

Only to people above a certain age. My DDs 29 and 30 wouldn't know who either the original Lililbet was, nor the current Lilibet.

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 04/06/2026 15:46

FenellaFeldman · 04/06/2026 15:15

Yes, you're right. She was nowhere near the saint she later became.

And time has passed enough for most people to realise she wasn't a saint.

And the problem with any documentary would be that it would be easy to run an alternative version which looked at her behaviour and treatment of her children.

Especially as Diana has another granddaughter who is going to play a role in British public life

And this. Especially when she gets to the age where she can attend formal events.

Yes that’s a good point. Earl Spencer is quite active on social media so he wouldn’t refuse on principle. It’s quite interesting that M can’t get anyone remotely interesting or famous on her shows or social media.

It’s not fair to compare children’s attractiveness, (which is another good reason to keep them off social media), but setting L up as the true heir to Diana, when the Wales DC have a better resemblance, isn’t going to end well. I wish H&M could value their children equally for what and who they are.

Re Diana and Mother Theresa dying on the same day, as someone said to me at the time "It's going to be a little bit crowded in heaven tonight" 😂

Yes, you're right. She was nowhere near the saint she later became.

Agreed. I think there was sympathy for the 19 year old stitched up - but similar to MM in Africa my gut turned when she did the Panorama interview - talking about her sexual affairs and those of her husband in a disingenuous and misguided attempt to gain public sympathy.

My thoughts then at that moment (but clearly not hers) where with her teenage boys who were away at school and had no idea their mother would be on TV talking about her extra marital sex life and those of her DH. It would have been excruciating and humiliating for any teenage boys.

She had many affairs whilst married and also with married men - so also contributing to destroying other families and marriages whilst complaining about C&C. Her first was when Harry was 2 years old (10 years before the Panorama interview) and she is known to have had at least 6 relationships. She also fell out with many people along the way - not dissimilar to MM. Probably similarly delusional and grandiose but hid it better.

And yet the BBC didn’t report on Archie’s birthday last month. Why? Because there wasn’t an official type photos taken. It was an old baby pic and a phone pic.

Yet they’ve reported on Lilis, because hers is a professional photoshoot and Meg n Harry are in the photos with her, unlike Archie

Harry n Meg know exactly how to get their daughter in the press. The right photos posing with parents, posted early in the day. With Archie, old photos and they were posted late.

After Spare anyone with an ounce of intelligence would steer clear of any involvement with a documentary about Harry's Diana memories. Spare made it clear that Harry isn't interested in truth or facts but only in promoting his own grievances. Who would want to be involved in that?

Edited

Vogue magazine has an article about the photo too.

Poor Archie only got a 7 year old baby photo with a picture of a woman's bare arse in the background. As well as that weird 'disaster zone' photo of him. With Lili of course. He didn't even merit his own photo.

Yet Lili gets an 'official' photo with her parents? And an up to date solo photo? Could they really make it any more obvious that she is the favoured child? And all this from someone who has made a living out of whining about being a 'spare'. The irony of it all. And they're both too dumb to see it.

I was pregnant when Diana died. That child is now 28. As pp have said, she had no meaning to anyone below the age of thirty and her Grandchildren certainly won’t be of interest unless they become famous in their own right.

I’m also not so sure that H&M are relatable or interesting to the younger generation themselves.

I found out I was pregnant on the day of her funeral and that child is also 28!

Mylovelygreendress · 04/06/2026 17:08

According to “ sources “ close to H and M they are furious that their updates etc to Frogmore Cottage are being removed .
