They are pushing the Overton Window. They are trying to normalise something we know isn't right, de facto royal duty + merching. And the more the media and the powers that be (BP, our government) say nothing, the more they keep "failing upwards", continue being gifted further lucrative/prestigious opportunities, and suffer zero real life consequences for all their disgusting behaviour, the more people will just lose interest and let them get on with it. Their eventual goal is people seeing it as ok - that's just what H&M do.

I think you're right. It's a case of centring themselves absolutely, focusing on their fame and money making that makes them lose sight of any moral parameters.

That's a badly written and poorly researched article. Standards in The Guardian have really gone downhill in the last few years, which might explain why they rarely allow comments.

If you are going to write about scapegoat you need at least some knowledge about the examples you have chosen to make your points. I feel Diana and Meghan were put in to generate clicks as opposed to actually proving her point. For example her contention that Diana was universally adored simply isn't true but she needs it to be too contrast her with Meghan, again not universally hatred. Simplistic and incorrect, typical Guardian opinion piece.
