The thing is... there is not another family like it. Probably not in the world, maybe vague similarities with other European royal houses, but none of them like this. They have far far more money spent on them than not far off all the others put together. See attached.

My take on it is...

Successive governments refuse to discuss anything to do with the Monarchy for fear of vote losing. It's a hot potato.

The royal family are unique, nothing like other rich families, they are bound by rules and protocol and so make up for it with the sort of behaviours we witness. Because they think they deserve it. They are, in essence, a dysfunctional hugely rich family, no more no less. The RF could do what they liked before the advent of mobiles, social media etc. Now those days are gone with QE2.
Charles had a chance to change the Monarchy drastically for the better. He chose not to.
And it will only get worse when he dies.

It's not even the money that's the main issue imo. It's the undue influence they have on the government, courts and the press. Kudos to the DM for serialising this book though.
Re the royals being able to do what they wanted. I agree. I think Harry rather than wanting to reform the monarchy wants to go back to those days. The kickback is because the Royals know they can't so they have to do deals with the press.
Reform of the Monarchy won't be a vote loser for long. It's mainly older people who are unquestioning supporters of the Monarchy. Once they go and 16 year old get the vote it will be far easier to hold them to account. William needs to be very careful if he wants George not to be the last King.

Absolutely.

And to add to my post with the pic... let's bear in mind the SG has gone up 48% in 2025/26, so the figures are even more astronomical than shown.

No, it's not just about the money but that's what the public can get their heads round. And it's creating dissent that will only increase.

jumpingthehighjump · 05/08/2025 08:41

You are echoing my thoughts exactly @LidlAmaretto

I think Charles has buried his head in the sand.

I have more thoughts on this but probably best left as they won't be popular with Royalists!

I think the royalists on here, myself included, disapprove as strongly as you of the conduct of Andrew and SF.

Whatever the late Queen’s role in dealing or not dealing with their behaviour I think it’s undeniable that things are different now. KC does not regard Andrew with indulgence and if we’re to believe Lownie, William can’t stand him.

Don’t worry - one way or another, a big clean-up is coming and personally I look forward to seeing A and SF in a big skip outside Windsor Castle very soon.

TheAutumnCrow · 05/08/2025 08:54

RosesAndHellebores · 05/08/2025 08:35

I think when there is a book like this rehashing the past and creating a storm, it may be quite carefully curated, with the backing of senior royals and their advisors, to keep eyes off bigger, contemporaneous stuff that could speak disaster on a bigger scale.

I know that’s accepted wisdom in PR circles, but I’m having trouble believing Lownie would be involved in something like that.

jumpingthehighjump · 05/08/2025 08:54

Haha... the big skip made me laugh! If only!

I'm just not sure anything will change. Look at the outcry with the Panorama programme about profiting by the Duchies and charities... big outcry, two days later, chip paper.

I think this will just die a death like all the other stories sadly.
I think all members of the RF are immune and it all just carries on as before.

deeahgwitch · 05/08/2025 08:56

@CoffeeCantata posts “You can see the Queen’s bailing out as simply wanting to pay the creditors, which is admirable…..”
When I see the Middletons, Carole and Michael in the VIP area at society dos like Ascot, Wimbledon or the Chelsea Flower Show or read articles of their latest Caribbean holiday I think of their creditors- small business people trying to make a living.
Did the taxman get his cut ?
Yes I know the business and its debts were sold but ………….

LidlAmaretto · 05/08/2025 09:15

@jumpingthehighjump I agree but with the money we always get 'its £1 a year per person' or whatever, and we'd have to maintain the palaces anyway ( although we'd all be able to go into them presumably all year round to help with the maintenance costs) but the structural entitlement is not a feature of European constitutional Monarchies. They are a feature of our particular Monarchy. The Late Queen may have been admired in her life but her blind spot and inaction over her own family has tarnished her legacy. Her main job surely was to produce decent people, if they have to be inflicted on us from birth. She didn't do that with Andrew and she's left Charles with an almighty mess. She wasn't that great with him in life and has stitched him up in death.

I wouldn’t be surprised if William is the last King. There won’t be any appetite for a monarchy in twenty years.

I wouldn't either. He's 40 something now. He could live for 40 more years or longer going by his grandparents. Will they be around in 50 years?

The same thing happened to the now Princess of Wales when the Sussex Squad were on the rampage here (and other places) and had her in their line of sight.

And I’m quite sure you know who and what the Sussex Squad are. Did you protest then?

Oh and the POW really didn’t say anything - unlike Meghan who even had her say numerous times on TV.

Edited

and once again this excuse is used.
yes there was some nasty stuff posted about the POW. but it was shut down pretty quick on here. unlike the 10000000000 of threads saying awful stuff about the DOS. people berate the SS yet do the same.

Thedom · 05/08/2025 09:28

Any chance of an archive link @TheAutumnCrow , its behind a paywall.

Thanks !

Since you brought it up…because it’s not what we’re discussing, but I can’t let that go!

The DoS has attacked the RF and particularly the Princess of Wales. The DoS also has a number of serious bullying allegations hanging over her head in the UK and US.

The Princess of Wales is guilty of neither of these things. She’s just done her job and been very ill.

That’s why they are treated differently on these threads.

End of derail as far as I’m concerned.

Andrew and Sarah should just move to Switzerland, it's where all his old eastern bloc and ME business buddies are. There were rumours at one time that Sarah had applied for Swiss citizenship, wonder if she ever got it.

victorianbaby · 05/08/2025 09:32

When I read this article this morning with all the household spending and collapsed enterprises it actually made me think of Meghan. We obviously have no idea of the current state of M and H's finances but it wouldn't surprise me at all in the future if something similar was unveiled .

Weepixie · 05/08/2025 09:32

with regards to age playing a part in people’s shock at today’s article on SF. I’m 67 and was aware of lots of what was said but the bits I didn’t know well and truly have me agog.

Time to get rid! History and modern day coverage shows that the royals are 90% awful, not that it is that surprising. Tell anyone/family that they are special, cosseting them and their behaviour results in this (gross entitlement).

Just out of interest, The Telegraph has also acknowledged Lownie’s book and Harry’s denial of punching Uncle Andrew.

So there is some traction building slowly around this new, collated narrative.

I suspect this is why Lownie has gone for the gossipy type stories. To capture the attention. I think the constant stories may add up. It's only when their positions c are threatened that the Royals do anything (see Windsor castle and the ' voluntarily paying tax'as it there doing us as favour).

Weepixie · 05/08/2025 09:51

CoffeeCantata · 05/08/2025 08:06

Well, I’m hoping it will make ‘expelling’ Andrew much easier for him, and that he will have the perfect excuse for keeping Andrew and SF away from public events. We shouldn’t have to see them ever again.

I also hope SF will be unable to get any kind of credit in future and will be shopping for herself in Primark. Anyone who gives her credit from now on would be crazy.

I’m hoping we’re one step closer to never seeing their fat piggy faces ever again. To be quite honest after reading the serialisation I’d be quite happy to douse them in paint or a dozen eggs myself. And I hope their next jobby’s a hedgehog!

I really must get back to the draft of my
letter to the King and let him know how I feel about this little lot as well.

Thedom · 05/08/2025 09:51

I have seen some posters on X really annoyed at Harry for throwing his hat in the ring on this book, claiming his legal action over insignificant tittle tattle willl only serve to undermine and detract from some of the more serious accusations,

The thing is, the RF are still really popular. Prince William apparently has a higher popularity rating than any politician has ever had.
