I've never started a thread here before, but I thought some people might be interested in this take on the story by a PR podcast I listened to yesterday (started listening to this podcast as I know very little about PR!).

It would be good to know if any of the resident PR people agree.

Someone with a better memory than mine might be able to confirm if I’m right in saying Meghan believed the wedding costs were offset by the amount of money she/they brought in through television rights and tourism.
As if everyone was tuning in to see HER personally, whereas it was more the royal event.

Profhilodisaster · 24/07/2025 14:46

Harry wanted St Paul's cathedral or Westminster Abbey, also documented in Spare

upinaballoon · 24/07/2025 14:47

Did she say "spectacle for the masses" - those actual words? I did watch the interview, with subtitles on and the sound off, because I'd seen Oprah do the 'What?' so many times on the trailer that I couldn't bear to hear it again, but I can't remember all of the exact words. I'm going away to google her words, hoping they are still available on a recording, not just reported by someone.
(I remember the twaddle about the Archbishop on the lawn.)

Meghan and Harry claimed in their High Court battle this week against Associated Newspapers that the income from their 2018 wedding “far outweighed” the taxpayers’ contribution to security. Although the Royal Family contributed to the wedding, the bulk of the £32million occasion was covered by the taxpayer

I found a written transcription.
"No one knows that. But we called the archbishop and we just said, "Look, this thing, this spectacle, is for the world. But we want our union between us. So, like, the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our back yard with the Archbishop of Canterbury..."

Like, I like went down, like, something of a rabbit hole before I went to the, like, transcription and I quite enjoyed it because there was the picture of HMQE in the green coat and the purple-plumed hat looking at Meghan in her wedding dress.

So, up, she did use the word 'spectacle' but she didn't actually say 'a spectacle for the masses', although that may have been implied. 'The masses' have been added by a combination of posts from posters and from journalists. I'm a bit of the masses. I stayed in and watched it and enjoyed it. I like a bit of bread and circuses. My subsequent annoyance can't knock out my enjoyment of the day.

Ar parst three. Gotta move.

She's not just shallow and uncultured. She's a woman of no substance, who knows it and shucks about trying to fool people to see her otherwise.

We all know people who think that (say) being a prima ballerina is all about wearing a tutu and looking pretty, accepting a bouquet of flowers at your third standing ovation; who prefer not to think about working so hard your feet bleed and you starve yourself and take drugs to put off puberty, have mental breakdowns at each audition and have no time to form lasting relationships.

She's the same. She wants the flowers and the ovation, but doesn't do any of the work and she knows she knows nothing. So she makes it all about the image, and mocks the underlying substance. She wants it to be all about image and nothing else, the ultimate Instagram influenceer. She had the highest worldwide profile, once in a lifetime deals thrown at her, contacts most people would kill to even have 5 second of airtime with, money coming out of her ears - and within less than 5 years she's revealed herself to be a bullying, lying, venal, grandiose, talentless, arrogant narcissist. It's quite something.

PoppysAunt · 24/07/2025 15:39

"spectacle for the world"
Pretty much the same. In other words, not their choice, but being dutiful global stars.
They could have had a low key wedding had they wanted. They didn't. That's fine, I just hate the hypocrisy.

HiRen · 24/07/2025 15:43

PoppysAunt · 24/07/2025 09:36

You find curtseying utterly ridiculous? Fine, don't curtsey, don't marry into an hereditary monarchy and expect it to modify for you to get only the bits you like.
Secondly - this isn't about having "a nice wedding". She was marrying a very rich white prince. Of course she'd have a fantastic wedding. It was the negative comment she made about the whole thing being "a spectacle for the masses" and saying that the Archbishop had married them 3 days previously in their own "backyard".
Can't you see the contradictions here, @BathOliversister2244 , if not the hypocrisy?

Wtf??? What does Harry being white have to do with anything? Does that make him an extra-worthy catch? Piss off with this racist shit. FFS.

wordler · 24/07/2025 15:46

It’s a while since I read Spare but I feel as though there was the implication that Harry and Meghan wanted a small intimate wedding (barefoot in Boswana with just a couple of friends) but felt that they had to have the televised grand affair but then Harry gets insulted when William suggests a smaller more intimate venue such as the chapel in Tetbury near Highgrove.

Hoolahoophop · 24/07/2025 15:48

"They could have had a low key wedding had they wanted." and they really could have, Meghan being a divorcee would have provided the excuse to go low key if they wanted, KC and Camilla's wedding was not a huge affair. Harry being 6th in line to the throne makes his marriage less important to the 'people' than William's and next George. His cousins, also in line but further out managed to have quieter weddings. It could have been managed had they chosen that.

jeffgoldblum · 24/07/2025 16:02

I believe one of the York girls also had to postpone her wedding for them too?! ( sorry not sure which, I mix them up!😳) , I’m hoping it wasn’t the same one who’s tiara she tried to pinch! , certainly would have been a double insult.

Profhilodisaster · 24/07/2025 16:04

Asking for St Paul's Cathedral or Westminster Abbey is hardly low key.

It was Eugenie, the one whose tiara she tried to pinch.

LadyJaneGrey18 · 24/07/2025 16:09

Really hit the nail on the head there. Except for one thing. I don’t think she does realise how shallow she is, I think she genuinely believes she’s very special and ‘elevated’.

Hadn’t Meghan already done Barefoot in Jamaica?

The deep one, yes. But the curtsey little girls do at ballet classes is more like the 'bob' one would do on meeting the late Queen.

How many adults are going to remember what they did in ballet class when they were 4? 😂

It's not "racist shit" to call Harry white.
My point was to demonstrate just how privileged this man is. At the very apex of privilege.
Which is not racist. Nor "shit"

I'll have you know I can still do 1st to 6th position. 😇....including some of the arms.

Me for one. And I was mindbogglingly bad at ballet. I'm now in my fifties, and would still have no problem giving the same bob as my four year old self.

You put one foot behind the other and bob your knees. I was 4 in 1975, still remember.

I remember some of the steps from my first ballet exam aged about 9 , I'm now 60.
Most people, even men , know how to courtesy
And it's actually on video for all to see, that Meghan did a courtesy in Suits.

I have the same attitude! When people are complaining about the cost of royal events - I think: but you get this fantastic show, gold coaches and horses, world-class music, beautiful buildings, robes and costumes which are ‘as camp as Christmas’ and lots of royals in their outfits to admire/bitch about all for the price of a cup of posh coffee. How much does a ticket to a West End musical cost???
