I've never started a thread here before, but I thought some people might be interested in this take on the story by a PR podcast I listened to yesterday (started listening to this podcast as I know very little about PR!).

It would be good to know if any of the resident PR people agree.

When It Hits The Fan: A Right Royal Whodunnit

When It Hits the Fan - A Right Royal Whodunnit - BBC Sounds

David Yelland and Simon Lewis examine the fallout from a very public secret royal meeting.

I'm surprised William was unaware of the meeting, you'd have thought Charles would have mentioned it.

StartupRepair · 17/07/2025 12:29

There is no pressure for William to reconcile. Charles of course, Harry is his son. It would be sad if they didn't have time together in his final years. Even if Meghan is phoning People magazine from Charles' death bed.

William will play the long game. Remember the Duke of Windsor was basically frozen out for the remainder of his life, another 30+ years after abdication.

Vespanest · 17/07/2025 12:33

I don't know how much William knew but it's good he had no representation as Harry's team would be indicating it was William and Charles seems content as long as it's not him in the firing line.

Article from Maureen Callahan in the Mail. She is no H & M fan:

As long as Charles is content in the knowing that these moments allow any narrative that Harry and maybe Meghan to choose. How Pa told his beloved son and insert any propaganda to use against William, Catherine and his wife Camilla. I doubt George would be off the table either. It would be pretty selfish of Charles.

The men appeared genuinely surprised by the presence of the cameras, which suggests they likely weren’t in on it. As for Meredith, it’s hard to say — we can’t see her or gauge her reaction. However, if there was a leak, I’d be more inclined to suspect her involvement over theirs.

They went back in after 10 minutes.
Speculating that she steered them out there so could be onto graphed, and then they realised that they were being photographed and went inside....

All a bit shitty of the Meredith woman

MaturingCheeseball · 17/07/2025 12:50

I suppose it’s a PR win in that it keeps them in the headlines. Like the twerking - hideous but it upped M’s followers when she was launching her jam.

bluegreygreen · 17/07/2025 12:59

One point made in the podcast was that there are plenty of anonymous hotel meeting rooms in London, so BP must have at least been prepared for this to happen.

This fits in with my suspicion (which I think I voiced on the previous thread) that BP may have played along just to see if it really would be leaked.

Talking of jam/ spread/ sauce has she restocked ?

HonoriaBulstrode · 17/07/2025 13:05

If the King had leaked then I don’t think they’d say it was a reconciliation meeting. That would have to involve Harry and Charles in a room without advisors

I doubt any advisor worth his or her pay would advise the King to have a meeting with H without a reputable witness present.

And of course the leak came from the Sussex side. It was all about Harry and what Harry wants.

All this has done is provide further proof, if any were needed, that H&M can't be trusted to keep any interaction private. (I do tend to agree that the 'surprise' pap shot rather has M's fingerprints all over it. Just a question of whether H was in on it.)

Mylovelygreendress · 17/07/2025 13:32

I know posters will be along to say “ why do you care ?” Etc but I feel that this is an important time for the RF . If Harry can be allowed any sort of Royal role after everything he has said and done , where does that leave Andrew ?

bellamorgan · 17/07/2025 13:38

I like the theory of Megan leaking and him not knowing but then it all feels a bit women blamey rather than dum dum Harry just being dumb again.

I do think the RF knew it was possible it was going to be leaked and it was a test as other have said there are many places they could of gone and had their meeting that wouldn’t of given any pap opportunities.

HonoriaBulstrode · 17/07/2025 13:43

If Harry can be allowed any sort of Royal role after everything he has said and done....

I don't believe anyone seriously considers that H should be or will be allowed any kind of royal role. Any reconciliation would be an entrely private matter - and as such there's no need for the public to know anything about it.

Assuming the initial approach came from the Sussex side, we don't know what was said to get the Palace to agree to the meeting. They might have suggested H had a serious personal issue he wanted to inform his father of.

wordler · 17/07/2025 13:56

I suspect the Sussex side requested some sort of ‘help’ to improve Harry’s media exposure, sold as a mutually beneficial thing - as in all the negative press around Sentebale and African Parks and Harry potentially reflecting badly on Charles as his father and also as King.

Would be why they sent the palace comms person.

If it was about reconciliation or money then it should have been a different staff member.

William probably said ‘don’t do it Pa it’s a set up’ and now is basking in his ‘I told you so’ s

It’s behind a paywall too, unfortunately 😆

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/07/2025 13:59

The podcast speculated this was all about Harry getting an official review of his security provision. I'm not sure if that is true but I am sure that whatever the point of this meeting Harry only cares about what he wants and if he doesn't get exactly what he wants he'll moan, again.

But that would be the wrong staffers from both sides to discuss security issues - this was PR to PR.

I thought the same. What would a PR person from California know about security arrangements for British royals? And this isn't the Tudor era. The King can't just snap his fingers and decree that a government department does his bidding.

Harry is never going to have the security arrangements he seems to think he needs. It's just not going to happen. He needs to accept the very generous arrangements he currently enjoys, or confine his travels to famously safe countries like Angola, Nigeria and Columbia.

bluegreygreen · 17/07/2025 14:14

Yes, that was where I disagreed with them. (Yet another) security review may be part of what Harry wants but it can't realistically be part of any reconciliation - it's all finished with, and it's clear that the King cannot and will not (for good constitutional reasons) intervene.

That’s weird, the hyper link isn’t including the archive site, so I think you’ll need to copy and paste the url, but I am posting it from archive.

Vespanest · 17/07/2025 14:19

I think Harry would like to tie his charity work to services to both the royal family and the UK and why it would be him only. So of course requiring security, this would fail on so many levels mostly he needs scripts, the openness of expenses and the big one what would be in it for the UK government. I very much doubt the meeting was sold as a meeting about security, even if it turned into that.

PR Meredith set up the post RAVEC appeal BBC interview where Harry blamed Charles. Maybe she thinks she can emotionally blackmail Charles into paying for private security, or Harry will withdraw from Invictus in Birmingham and blame Charles and make him look bad in front of the military. There was already an article in the Telegraph last week where the chief exec of Invictus was hinting Harry’s attendance was not a given. Harry barred from beloved cause he founded by cruel father shocker!
