Happy 10th birthday to Princess Charlotte.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have released an image via Instagram to mark the occasion. Photo taken by Catherine (apparently using an iPhone).

OK. I will ignore the bizarreness. I have two children. One is sporty. Give him a bat or ball or any form of sports equipment and he will make a decent fist of it. He is very good at a couple of sports and will give others a go. The other is outdoorsy. She likes to walk, to wild swim, to ride, to be outside as much as she possibly can. In her ideal world she would only come inside for bedtime. Tricky for someone who works in London!. Pretty sure they were born that way. Neither is better. They are just different.

But hey. hahahahahahaha.

What if you like to be outdoor all day doing a sport? Are you sporty or outdoorsy?

What about the gardening?

My first response to that was that it’s Photoshopped. Something about the way her head sits on her body looks wrong — as though two different photos with a different filter or slightly different focus had been used. Her face looks ‘sharper’ than her hair where it falls over her shoulder and her body, or something. It was the first thing I noticed and I can’t ‘unsee’ it, and was surprised no one else had mentioned it.

Oh no: here we go again. 🙄

I just thought: “ William!”

No paternity doubts here!

I’ve always seen Charlotte very like the late Queen and a young Lady Sarah Chatto. I don’t see Diana if I’m honest.

But given the differences in colouring, her resemblance to William is uncanny in this photo.

Louis is more like Kate - though there is a bit of Andrew, who was actually the best looking of the royals. ( Sure I’ll be pounced on for saying anything positive …)

jeffgoldblum · 04/05/2025 00:51

To be completely honest, I just thought oh a nice picture of a child!!! , then I moved on.

I think it's the position she's sat in, both arms behind her leaning back so head tilted at a slightly unnatural angle to be looking at the camera.
The blurring looks standard for phone photography focusing on the face.

@RandyRedHumpbackplease can you clarify what you’re getting at?

I think Louis is pure Michael Middleton. Seriously he’s his little mini me.

George resembles William and Diana (and perhaps George VI)

Charlotte resembles Elizabeth II and Sarah Chatto (although in that birthday photo I see William and Diana)

Archie looks like Thomas Markle with Harry’s colouring.

I don’t think I’ve seen much of Lili but what I’ve seen suggests she also highly resembles Thomas Markle too.

Can you clarify what you are getting at? Skiing, scouting, tennis whatever Catherine in particular seems to like has been declared by you as "sporty" not "outdoorsy". Is there a strict delineation between the two concepts or any room for overlap?

I can see a bit of Kate’s father in George, and a lot of George VI - right down to the expressions he gets.,

Not so much Louis to me.

I can’t see Diana at all except in young pictures of William, who was very like her as a child. But the children are like the Windsor aspects of William.

I thought Archie looked like a slightly darker-haired Harry. I haven’t seen much of Lili though what I have seen looked very like Harry to me.

They are all cuties.

Oh actually I have seen a picture of Diana’s brother as a child. I could definitely see Harry in him, though they are less alike as adults.

Calliopespa · 04/05/2025 09:30

Oh and Archie had sweet slight curls/ waves at one point which must be from his mum.

If it was taken with an iPhone, one assumes it was the 'pro' version of the 16 or 15, in which case it does a lot of post-processing automatically - basically takes multiple images and combines them into one using the 'best bits'. Not sure if you can switch that function off as I can't afford one myself to test it!

Edited

I’m a sucker for curls. DS1 lost his baby curls when he had his first hair cut. DS2 has super curly hair but makes me cut them whenever they start to curl up 😭

Of course there’s overlap! It was a throwaway comment based on the fact that this
picture is the first one I’ve seen of any of the Wales’ doing anything like walking-I hesitate to say “outdoorsy” again! Plenty of pictures of QE11, and of Charles and his boys on hills and in burns and so on. I don’t understand why you are making so much of it.

Catherine is known to be a keen photographer, using a DSLR camera as opposed to a phone (not that theres anything wrong with using a phone camera!), and it's possible that your eyesight is picking up differences in the depth of field, in that depending on the aperture and speed of the camera settings and the ambient light, the subject of the photo (Charlottes face) is in sharper focus than the rest of the photo (that's why the background is blurred). I don't believe Photoshop has been used here.

There are plenty of photos of the Wales doing outdoorsy things, including this photo of Catherine taken by Louis on a walk in nature. Catherine has been very vocal about her love of nature and the importance of nature in her early years project, plus how nature has been a sanctuary for their family this past year.

Because you made so much of it, perhaps? Since you brought it up in the first place and took the trouble of telling us all about your children to make your point of the distinction between "sporty" and "outdoorsy". Just trying to clarify what you mean. Just another one of your throw away comments then. Not complicated.

shewasasaint · 04/05/2025 12:35

I don't know if they go hiking much or not but I would imagine they have walks in the hills at Balmoral.
I haven't seen many photos of their activities there, just arriving and sometimes in the car going to church.
They certainly seem to be an active family though.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 04/05/2025 12:47

I think they also pick rather anonymous spots for most of their photos rather than somewhere the public might mob later. It's rumoured that Charles favours some of the spots near my parents' valley because they're less well-trodden, or possibly over by the eastern fells.

I grew up in the Lakes, literally next to a mountain footpath. There's nothing in her clothing that's at all unusual. Camo colours are really common.

I only “made so much of it” and used my children as examples because I was asked to explain myself. Jeeze Louise!

It’s not camo. It doesn’t even look much like camo!!!

jeffgoldblum · 04/05/2025 13:53

God who cares, it’s a nice photo of a 10 year old on her birthday wearing a jacket and backpack, it doesn’t need dissecting, it doesn’t need to be sending secret messages, it doesn’t have ulterior motives.

Agreed.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 04/05/2025 14:16

It’s not a traditional camo jacket. It’s more like an autumnal forest pattern though obviously camo influenced. It’s lovely, I might look into getting one for myself, it’s actually surprisingly affordable for my budget (thanks to whoever noted that previously 🥰)

As I said earlier, I have a Jack Pyke fleece in the same pattern (English Oak). Can confirm it's very nice. And I can confirm it does work to camouflage you in a deciduous wood forest environment - if that's not the definition of camo, I'm not sure what is!

Think it cost me £20 on offer, for whoever said it is an expensive posh brand 🤣 back in 2020 when I was cold while WFH. Who knew I was 5 years ahead of royal fashion!

You made a comment - a wholly unnecessary one - that others quite rightly interpreted as snide. I think that interpretation is probably correct, considering your subsequent nonsensical distinction between "sporty" and "outdoorsy".
