Happy 10th birthday to Princess Charlotte.

The Prince and Princess of Wales have released an image via Instagram to mark the occasion. Photo taken by Catherine (apparently using an iPhone).

My first response to that was that it’s Photoshopped. Something about the way her head sits on her body looks wrong — as though two different photos with a different filter or slightly different focus had been used. Her face looks ‘sharper’ than her hair where it falls over her shoulder and her body, or something. It was the first thing I noticed and I can’t ‘unsee’ it, and was surprised no one else had mentioned it.

I just came on here to say I wondered if they’d carefully chosen a photo with no arms/hands visible etc and an oversized jacket specially so that no one could say it was photoshopped. And yet here we go 🙄

Ah, that might explain it. I’ve never used it. To me the effect in that photo, as reproduced on this thread (I’ve not seen it otherwise) looks noticeably a little strange, as though her head is in a different focus to her body.

You really don't know much about photography, do you? It's very easy to focus on one part of a body.

Pointing an iPhone at someone is hardly ‘photography’. Anyone would think I’d rained on her birthday cake.

Yh. I think it's altered more then photoshopped as if the picture came out blurry but they were able to fix the face by zooming out & keeping the background original (? If that makes sense)

I don't think it's as dodgy as the mothers day card or as ridiculous as her ad for private health insurance post-cancer video

It's portrait mode on an iPhone,it blurs the background.

She looks like her dad!

crumblingschools · 03/05/2025 00:01

@HamYard but even if it just pointing an iPhone at someone they have worked out how to do it better than you, if you haven’t worked out how to blur the background

No it’s not

if it was taken on an iphone then she probably used portrait mode. that blurs the background of the photo and focuses on the person in frame.

I was going to say this too. I often take photos on portrait mode of DD and love the "professional" effect it gives. I'm no photographer but think my photos always turn out nice in that setting.

Also echoing those saying what a lovely message it gives for younger girls of today. Great outdoorsy active girl not having to be "picture perfect". And actually, perhaps this is picture perfect.

NewAgeNewMe · 03/05/2025 05:39

Charlotte is the image of William.

BS 🙄

RedRosesPinkLilies · 03/05/2025 06:50

It’s a lovely picture - portrait mode on iPhone. Like any mum might take. (Slightly tongue in cheek - the Royals aren’t that ordinary).

But boy, if you want to know how mean adults can be about someone - even a child - come on this seemingly innocuous thread.

Oh for Gods sake.

But even if if was photoshopped - so blooming what 🙄!

JADS · 03/05/2025 08:21

I really like the casual.look in this photo. It's bit of a departure as they usually choose slightly more formal clothes for the children's birthday photos (Louis recent photo for example).

bookworm14 · 03/05/2025 08:25

It’s a lovely photo. Much prefer this informal look to the weird photos where they’re forced into fair isle jumpers and smocked dresses that no normal child would actually wear.

orangedream · 03/05/2025 10:32

Lovely natural photo of a child in a rain jacket.

Am I the only one who doesn't care if Kate uses photoshop to improve pictures?

It was really just a storm in a tea cup. Nearly everyone photo shops or filters their photos these days. It just means that Catherine will no longer issue her photos directly to the press, they have to take them from her instagram account now.

All because William is shit at taking photos 🤣 (same as my husband).

It doesn’t matter how photoshopped or not photoshopped this picture is-because it hasn’t been sent to news agencies. But let’s not go down that particular rabbit hole again!

jeffgoldblum · 03/05/2025 11:29

If I were you I wouldn’t mention photoshop at all !

crumblingschools · 03/05/2025 11:43

I seem to remember you went down that rabbit hole @CurlewKate

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 03/05/2025 12:44

Desperately sad that actual grown women can see a lovely photo of a child and the first thing they do is pick holes in it.

Didn’t she tell David Attenborough that her favourite animal were spiders? She’s definitely not going to be a prissy damsel-in-distress princess. Love it!

Are we still pretending in 2025 like there's some sort of all-encompassing social pressure for women to be like submissive housewives who sleep in makeup and have six kids and no hobbies that don't feed her husband? The government provides financial incentives for women to return to work while their babies should still be breastfeeding. It's hardly surprising or refreshing that Charlotte likes outdoor persuits - it would be counter-cultural to be a perfectly groomed, damsel-in-distress princess at this point in history.

Oh. Is that why Meghan Markle has gone full tradwife and selling jam? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m now beginning to understand why the thread on Louis birthday was removed by mn!

I see William, Anne and Michael Middleton . Fabulous photo.

Yes. I tried to explain the difference between a charming family snap shared on Instagram and a picture distributed by a reputable news agency of record.

Samcro · 03/05/2025 14:39

I can't understand how a lovely photo of a delightful 10 year old can have so many negative posts.

(nice one op for getting a Meghan bash in)
