I thought jam was a common thing to have on pancakes but I'm not from the UK.

On Pancake Day, which was yesterday, traditionally it's lemon juice and sugar in the UK. But I gather they were not pancakes but crepes, and I don't know what goes with those.

Crepes are pancakes in the U.K.?

I just assumed it was another way to shoehorn jam in somewhere. It was just bizarre that’s all.

Firealarm1414 · 05/03/2025 22:51

'Pancakes' in the US are the thicker ones that you stack on top of each other, and 'crepes' are uk style thin pancakes. I top them with lemon and sugar, maple syrup or nutella. Cant imagine jam. Not sure why anyone would need an expensive packet mix though when all they are is flour, eggs and milk whisked together.

BasiliskStare · 05/03/2025 23:02

@FarmerDramaLlama - AFAIK British pancakes are the same ingredients as crepes but bigger and a bit thicker - crepes are very thin.( American pancakes have baking powder in them - not sure what other ingredients - fluffier and thicker ) . I think you can pretty much have anything with either crepes or pancakes sweet or savoury but lemon juice and sugar the traditional pancake day way in the UK

You have the totality of my crepe / pancake knowledge there Farmer 😂

Vespanest · 05/03/2025 23:03

The pancakes are french styled, so should be thinner than the uk pancakes and the french do use jam

User14March · 05/03/2025 23:03

In the ladybug/ladybird bit why does she refer to Harry as ‘my husband’ to a good friend?

IdaGlossop · 05/03/2025 23:08

Meghan calls herself a 'preserve nerd' (quite a catchy expression, to be fair) while making raspberry preserve (episode 4) but she isn't a preserve nerd because she ladles the preserve into the jars without any mention or sight of sterilising. Oh dear, Meghan. There will be mould. And, Meghan, you need to get yourself a jam funnel - available on Amazon US$8.99 - so the jam flows cleanly into the STERILISED jar.

TemuRoyal · 05/03/2025 23:16

If

BasiliskStare · 05/03/2025 23:26

@IdaGlossop Oh dear, Meghan. There will be mould. (brilliant phrase )

But yes YES . I had forgotten this , but I noticed that - such a stupid thing to leave out. I made pickled pears once (nice with goose) and Delia (whose recipe it was ) was very hot on sterilising the jar. I bet Meghan didn't sterilise the pickle jars either. Even Nigella sterilises her jars and she can play a bit fast and loose when she doesn't think something is worth the effort.
'Course it won't matter as the whole cupboardful was probably put in a skip after it was a wrap. 😂

Americans sometimes use buttermilk. They always seem amused by lemon and sugar on pancakes.
Scottish pancakes are not as flat as crepes and better than American ones which can be a bit spongey. Salty too 😂😂😂😂

HeidiWhole · 05/03/2025 23:38

Seems I'm a bit late to this and haven't read all the threads but just watched the first few episodes.

It's all very pretty to look at which a nice bit of escapism in a grim world. But all very pointless and unrelatable.

The main thing I notice is that Meghan only really seems interested in her guests when they are talking about how great she is.

Just watching the bit about 'sun tea' WTF 😂

BasiliskStare · 05/03/2025 23:38

@glitterturd I bow like one of Meghan's guests to your superior pancake knowledge and fabulosity 😂

MissRoseDurward · 05/03/2025 23:42

Or warming the jars? Maybe you don't need to in California, but when my mum used to make jam, we always warmed the jars, because it's not a good idea to pour or ladle hot jam into a cold glass jar.

@basiliskStare I know the Delia recipe you mean, although I have never made it. It's in the Christmas book. My dealings with jars are limited to chutney and marmalade but I have always sterilised before using my trusty jam funnel.

I feel the need for a lie down after two episodes of WLM yesterday and two this evening. What I find exhausting is it's so relentlessly upbeat and frenzied. No moments of 'car-lum', as Meghan calls it. I did feel a bit sorry for Meghan in episode 4 because she made dog biscuits for Define's dog but Delfine came without the dog. Still, we did get to see the now deceased Guy chomping on one with his 'old man teeth'.

StartupRepair · 05/03/2025 23:48

It's clear from the Barrymore interview that the 'love story' is a major part of the current branding.

friendlycat · 06/03/2025 00:07

Somehow I don’t think she’s found her niche and USP yet! This type of production isn’t going to deliver what she wants.

I almost think it’s game over now in terms of the self serving publicity as it’s not just the UK media that’s so heavily criticising the antics but those Stateside.

Their biggest problem that is insurmountable is that they negatively trashed their original “star status” which was the connection to the British royal family. They tarnished their status irrevocably and they can’t climb their way back up.

PH will always be the son of the King and brother of the future King. It’s just how it is.

Meghan as his wife just doesn’t have the gravitas without having put in the hard work of gaining respect for doing anything of note since their marriage. It’s no good just spouting forth about loads of things without actually matching the words with relevant actions.

You can’t suddenly be a guru in lifestyle, cooking and social ambience just because other ventures haven’t been successful. Those that are have honed their craft over a considerable period.

They need to take a major step back now and live a quieter lifestyle as this really isn’t working for them.

User14March · 06/03/2025 00:09

Is Harry throwing her under the bus somewhat by not being more present in this show?

BasiliskStare · 06/03/2025 00:14

On the basis of Do No Harm (although perhaps M&H more hypocritical than Hippocratic ) - but a useful M.O. We've had

  1. Bath salts with essential oils which shouldn't be used directly on the skin without carrier oils
  2. Leaving flowers in stagnant water
  3. Not sterilising her jars

I would have thought these would count as pretty good hints or tips for your aspiring Lifestyle guru.

I think The Wales children were known as George, Charlotte and Louis Cambridge. Now the ware known by the surname Wales just as Harry was known as Harry Wales/

It seems to be a choice.

@IcedPurple

I guess that's why Harry and Meghan cling so tightly to those titles and ensured that their children are Prince and Princess. It's obviously extremely important that everyone knows they're not just anyone!

They all cling to their titles. I don’t like titles. They have nothing to do with merit. But while one lot has them, then the other lot has the same right. I don’t think the King (ridiculous title in this day and age) wants to strip anyone of titles - because it’s so important to the longevity of the Royal Family and their funded support. They all make money out of their titled positions. It’s funny that some people just have a problem with the Sussexes making money from their titles.

AuroraCake · 06/03/2025 00:51

They need to lessened though. No Prince or Princess titles for any further possible children of Charlotte and Louis. I am fine with Lord or Lady or nothing. Also both the same. Gender equality. The situation of the Queens grandchildren in fairness was a joke. Three different types of styling. Only children and siblings of monarch should be a Princess or Prince. Whether they want a more aristocratic title for everyone else or no titles at all is up to them.

Let’s be honest Mia Tindall has more association with the royal family than Prince Archie. His sister has maybe met her grandfather once and never met the rest…possibly Eugenie.

Baital · 06/03/2025 01:09

I think the issue with the titles (I agree all titles are mildly ridiculous) is using them having very publicly said that the RF is toxic, having accepted an award for tackling racism in the RF etc

Why choose to use titles from such a (according tonthem) morally bankrupt institution?

It seems a tad hypocritical.

Weepixie · 06/03/2025 02:17

They all cling to their titles. I don’t like titles

Whether you like titles or not is irrelevant. And sharing your opinion on royalty over centuries in order to detract from Harry and Meghan’s behaviour and hypocrisy isn’t working either but is a good example of how far you have to stretch things in order to makes excuses for them.

The fact is that Harry and Meghan left the Royal family and didn’t hold back on letting us know how horrible they supposedly are yet here they are a few years later still holding on to their royal titles.

Jacquettes · 06/03/2025 06:00

I don’t have to ‘stretch’ anywhere. And pulling out one sentence of my 2 paragraph post to make a point is disingenuous on your part.

This is a nasty thread and is now in its 6th iteration. It’s full of teeth gnashing crazy opinions, and fantasies, from posters that absolutely do hate Meghan while protesting that they don’t - it is completely transparent.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 06/03/2025 06:05

I doubt Meghan will care about the negative reviews from the U.K. as Will just view them as toxic, jealous, racist etc

But the American ones - well that’s a different story i should imagine.

MrsLeonFarrell · 06/03/2025 06:31

I wonder if part of the criticism arises from Netflix's enthusiasm for cancelling series at random? I've stopped starting new series there because the ones I enjoy are invariably cancelled just after I've watched the season 1 cliffhanger. In a couple of articles I have found a tone of annoyance that Netflix cancels lots of popular things but still gave Harry and Meghan such a great deal for novices.

Instead of season 2 of this can they please bring back .... well there's a whole list I won't bore you with!

The difference is that they left the RF
