The royal family

Is there another couple in the world like The Sussexes?

I was musing last night about this aspect - they had the world at their feet. Despite what Sussex Supporters like to suggest most people in the UK nodded their heads " yes it was lovely Harry was getting married finally" . I had never heard of the bride myself as I don't watch American tv shows of that ilk. She was black or biracial? It didn't even enter my head what colour she was initially and then as coverage started it didn't make one iota of difference one way or the other. I recall the day of the wedding - it was sunny and the pubs were full of royal cheer broadcasting the wedding.

And then it all started to where we are today.

Are there any other couples in the world who have gone through such a downfall? Is this a feature of the social media arena today?
We see P Diddy and Blake Lively and others exposed now through SM.
You can't count the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in this category as they were always unpopular.

Can you think of any examples of people who have fallen so spectacularly?

I know people say " they live in California, they have money blah blah" but their reputation is one that most people would not want.

Is it purely because of their seeming complaining and sense of entitlement ? I mean you don't see the real philanthropists in this way - in fact you rarely hear about them and what they do.

It’s quite a passive-aggressive way of trying to diminish their importance. There’s a real trend for it in academic and medical fields, where women are not accorded their ‘Professor’ or ‘Dr’ titles in interviews, at conferences etc.

And always referring to The POW as Kate when it is known that she prefers Catherine which is what The King , Queen etc call her . Their message when Catherine’s cancer was announced was wishing Kate health and healing . Everyone else who posted a message gave Catherine her title.
As I have said before , for someone who is so insistent on her own title being used , she seems to have a real problem using other people’s!

I have always wondered if Harry called her Kate when they were friends and that is now ingrained in him. If so, then I can maybe understand that's why Meghan does it.

However she also called Sarah DoY Fergie which makes me think it's a power play. It also harks back to horrible tabloid misogyny. Hardly feminist actions.

Yes. Fergie was particularly odd - didn’t even give her a ‘your Aunt Sarah’ - although I’m assuming it was to play to American audiences who know Fergie but not necessarily recognize her as Aunt Sarah.

She made it clear before her wedding that she wanted to be known as Catherine .
Even if Harry had once called her Kate he ( and Meghan ) should respect her wishes.

I agree with this. Her decision and it should be accepted.

I'm playing Devil's Advocate a bit, but Harry was close to Catherine. I vaguely remember he used to have a affectionate nickname for her, but I think it was Cath rather than Kate. I could be wrong though.

Mylovelygreendress · 28/01/2025 09:38

I think you are right @JADS - you just reminded me that he called her Cath .

It is disrespectful but the genie is out of the bottle unfortunately.

Rebecca English of the DM says it’s just for reasons of headline space but did you ever see them refer to “Queen Liz?”

shockthemonkey · 28/01/2025 12:05

That's interesting... they're back with Ashley Hansen. But letting Ashley "take the reins" this time...

So we can hope for all messages coming from the couple to pass through the True, Necessary and Kind filters from now on.

Thedom · 28/01/2025 12:52

As IF she was not going to show up 🙄it's the only credible thing they are associated with anymore.

Sounds like they are teasing a family trip, kids included, that would certainly help to soften any commentary about them.

Ohpleeeease · 28/01/2025 13:08

Invictus is a charity, not a “Sussex initiative” as stated in the Express article. It is not Harry’s to pass on to his children. This is the trouble with the way royals are treated, no-one ever says no to them.

So she’s going to the Invictus games and they have a new PR strategy…..because the solo thing wasn’t working out. It’s now joint appearances seemingly.

🤮

Thedom · 28/01/2025 13:47

Harry desperately needs his association with Invictus, the idea of 'passing it on' to his kids is another attempt at trying to replicate his Royal life and the aristocratic circles of generational inheritances he is used to. .

An article popped up on yahoo, this paragraph kind of sums it up,

The piece, published Jan. 17, delves into the Sussexes’ struggling business ventures, painting a tragic picture of their attempts at maintaining relevance after quitting royal life in 2020.

From the article:

“There will be a renewed focus on the Sussexes as a couple, as a brand and showcasing them as a couple and family,” said the source.

"Showcasing them as a couple and a family" is a new direction - looks like they will be launching the children to the press (who couldnt go to school in the UK "because of the 'paps' camped outside daily") - expect lots of performative maternal parenting to distract from the testimonies of dozens of her staff who have reported being exposed to her bullying over many years.

But they tried the solo thing because they thought the joint thing wasn't working! They make it up as they go along. I wonder if she will dress appropriately this time?

Framilode · 28/01/2025 14:51

Somebody I know has a daughter who was close friends with POW at school, came for sleepovers etc. I asked whether she was called Kate or Catherine. She said always Catherine.

They don’t seem capable of sticking to any strategy long enough to see if it works. I’m getting dizzy from the changes in direction. They really don’t seem to have any type of long term plan 🤷‍♀️

If something isn't working then of course you change and try something else. Be silly to stick to something that isn't working. Who in real life sits there and goes well this isn't working but let's just stick with it anyway.

Onlyonekenobe · 28/01/2025 15:16

They just can't get it right, and they don't have the ability to get it right because they can't strike accords/deals/understandings with the press. They have to pay for/plant good press which in and of itself says so much.

That the Express has let it be known that Meghan's appearance at Invictus is part of a PR strategy, rather than something she wants to do because she believes in the cause, is the sort of slip that is behind her terrible reputation. Add to that past appearances at Invictus which were performatively me-me-me while missing out on opportunities to showcase performers rather than herself, from a woman who's been known to say "I can't believe I'm not getting paid for this" while on royal duty, and it's clear to anyone that yes, her appearance really would be all about Meghan and her reputation.

And because this sort of stuff leaks, negative press around eg the wildfires - which she probably did genuinely care about, as any of us would if our hometown went up in flames - will also follow and people will always second guess her motives. Plus, everyone knows she needs all the publicity she can get because Netlfix etc.

Everyone knows that the RF are probably bored beyond tears when it comes to some/most of their appearances. But they get good press because the papers need them for clicks, the press and the RF are two pillars of the same establishment, and the relationship is tense but not hostile (any more). Harry & Meghan have lost that protection and will never be able to replicate it as they just don't have the power or heft. Very few in the US do. You have to be a really heavy hitter of national treasure status to get that sort of omerta from the US press.

If she turns up and ONLY supports Harry that would make a world of difference, and by that I mean ....
No marching in front of veterans ( in playsuits)

No using it as a fashion show for herself

No making speeches about things that are not relevant to the games

Turn up in invictus branded clothes, allow Harry to lead the show , cheer on the veterans.
This would make her look infinitely more likeable.

Spectre8 · 28/01/2025 15:45

So basically she cant think for herself and be controlled by what other people think she should do to be accepted 🤔

What she shouldn't do if she wants to be taken seriously is use Invictus for her own benefit.

Everybody should always think for themselves, at all times and in all cases.

Nobody should allow themselves to be controlled by what other people think.

Nobody should ever need to strive for acceptance.

Meghan, sadly for her, seems to crave acknowledgment and acceptance by all for being something she's not.

No by all means, she can carry on being tone deaf and not reading the room , however whatever fall out will solely be her own responsibility.

I was thinking about the allusion to getting milkshakes for her 'littles' at a speech at the last Games, hence why she was late. The whole thing was so jarring: yes she knew she'd been in the papers photographed at an In-and-Out drive through the day or two days before. But to openly allude to that so soon after arriving at the Games, to a room full of people and Press as though they'd been questioning her tardiness or absence and she needed to provide them with a humble excuse (as though getting milkshakes for rich kids in California is a solid excuse to an annual event for wounded veterans), when she's there to laud and champion a specific cause, was just so arrogant and lacking in self-awareness. How can she not see that people are going to question her true motivations for being there? So full of herself!

Also, doesn't that article say she has thought for herself and is going to allow herself to be controlled by Ashley Hansen, the PR person behind this PR firm, to improve her image? 🙄
