The royal family

Is there another couple in the world like The Sussexes?

I was musing last night about this aspect - they had the world at their feet. Despite what Sussex Supporters like to suggest most people in the UK nodded their heads " yes it was lovely Harry was getting married finally" . I had never heard of the bride myself as I don't watch American tv shows of that ilk. She was black or biracial? It didn't even enter my head what colour she was initially and then as coverage started it didn't make one iota of difference one way or the other. I recall the day of the wedding - it was sunny and the pubs were full of royal cheer broadcasting the wedding.

And then it all started to where we are today.

Are there any other couples in the world who have gone through such a downfall? Is this a feature of the social media arena today?
We see P Diddy and Blake Lively and others exposed now through SM.
You can't count the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in this category as they were always unpopular.

Can you think of any examples of people who have fallen so spectacularly?

I know people say " they live in California, they have money blah blah" but their reputation is one that most people would not want.

Is it purely because of their seeming complaining and sense of entitlement ? I mean you don't see the real philanthropists in this way - in fact you rarely hear about them and what they do.

The thing that intrigues me about them is how they manage to polarise and give us so much to genuinely debate. Almost everything they do gives us the opportunity to argue. I can't think of any other couple that gives us so much to talk about and discuss.

By the by, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor may have been mostly unpopular as a couple but the Duke was very popular when he was Prince of Wales. I suppose that means he followed a similar trajectory to Harry as he was much more popular before his marriage.

MaggieMistletoe · 23/01/2025 15:29

I can't think of a good comparison, especially as there isn't an explosive scandal you can pin it down to, which how most downfalls come about. More like just a consistent stream of poor decisions and true colours being shown.

I think the reason that comparative couples are hard to find is due to the fact that people of their (conspicuously lacking) calibre, rarely get so far into the public conciousness. Yes there are plenty of famous people who are entitled, arrogant, selfish etc but they often have some kind of area they have excelled in which gives them a degree of respect and standing in society. Undoubtably their are plenty of rich who are greedy, grasping, immoral, work-shy but they usually have the sense to live a quieter, unobtrusive life and do not flaunt their lives to the press.

Neither can I think of any couple who have so obviously had such a terrible effect on each other. Clearly both were not the nicest people before they met but Meghan has massively inflamed and exacerbated Harry's paranoia and other MH issues, as well as fed his jealous, bitter, resentful, angry nature. She has uprooted him from his few ventures of good works that gave meaning and value to his life and gave him some credit in the public eye. She has emasculated him and made a fool of him, practically toting him about on a dog lead in the early years. Whereas has enabled and fed her ego, her greed, her insane hunger for more more more. He has exposed her in the worst way at every turn and didn't seem to give her any kind of sensible advice and guidance at any point to help her come across better. They have encouraged each other in alienating both sides of the family and seem to support each other in being away from their children a shocking amount of time, right from earliest infanthood. She doesn't seem to have been able to improve him with her (historic) work ethic (a kind description of her desperate pursuit of fame) and he doesn't seem have been able to let any of his manners, knowlege of etiquette and social niceties rub off on her (rather the opposite, his knowledge of how to behave in social/professional situations has dropped of a cliff).

They don't seem to have many positive attributes to bring to their coupledom. Which is not true of your average 'power couple'.

The thing that makes their situation quite unique is that they were lauded and feted for who the public imagined them to be, rather than a proven track record that was at least somewhat worthy of being celebrated, or at least paid notice to. They are vacuous, shallow people with absolutely nothing interesting about them at all other than the fascinating downward trajectory they persist in hurtling along so very publicly.

Just as a minor point, the Duke of Windsor was incredibly popular when he was Prince of Wales. He was the first royal "superstar". But I agree that the marriage didn't go down well with the public.

veraswaistcoat · 23/01/2025 15:44

Yes that is a good point about the Duke of Windsor being very popular as a single man.

Yes he was, but like Harry his public image may not have reflected the reality. When he became king, even before the issue of Wallis became pressing, courtiers were frustrated by his lack of discretion (leaving confidential papers lying around at his private residence, Fort Belvedere) and lack of work ethic.

Once you remember the ceaseless good works the couple have done, the charities they’ve set up, Harry’s crusading for truth and justice, the humble way they live their lives, and the miraculous and supernatural messages that Meghan hears, it has to be…

Mary and Joseph.

49% of that is made up in your head. And another 49% is stuff other people have made up in their heads that you've read. 2% might be objectively true.

@MaggieMistletoe yes I see the point you make - that it's been a build up and I agree. I think though that I'm surprised at times that it has all come crashing down so soon.

I don’t hate Harry and Meghan at all, not a bit.

I think they’re fantastic entertainment. Like Brangelina or Wayne & Coleen or Katie Price. 👍

Good point. An early example of 20th century PR and spin!

Obsessive criticism then.

Another day, another thread to rip into Meghan.

CathyorClaire · 23/01/2025 20:38

most people in the UK nodded their heads " yes it was lovely Harry was getting married finally"

They did.

But back then most people in the UK weren't aware of the extensive spin employed by the palace to place Harold as a naughty but nice golden hearted cheeky chap in the minds of the public who pay their upkeep and won't tolerate a royal fuckmuppet.

He's managed to dispel all that expensive good work all by himself and while Rachel has made her own (albeit very entertaining) faux pas, IMO she's the lesser partner purely because she'd never have achieved this level of notoriety or approbium on her own account.

Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there

He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd go away...
