Sussexes statement about Californian wildfires

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 09/01/2025 19:47

Meghan and Harry have released a statement in regards to the California wildfire via their Sussex.com website.

It reads:

”In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life.
A state of emergency has been issued.
If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas:
Support
Organizations such as José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner of The Archewell Foundation, are serving meals to both first responders and victims of the fire.
CAL FIRE and LA Fire Department Foundation and others are working closely to support firefighters who risk their lives, bravely showing up in these high-risk environments to help save homes, families, and communities in need.
Animal Wellness Foundation is continuing to house and care for animals evacuated by the fires while Compton Cowboys is providing emergency transportation services for horses.
Airbnb and 211LA have partnered to provide free, temporary housing for those who have been displaced.

Baby2baby is providing essential supplies including diapers, clothing, hygiene products, and emergency kits to families in need.
All Power Books and many others are staying open for emergency use, offering supplies and water for pickup while working tirelessly to distribute essentials to those affected.

Open your home
If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.
Give back
Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need.”

Helping animals helps us all.

Maybe they will bring out a joint cook book. “Donuts by Donuts” 🍩

I would love to know what floury (geddit) forward would go in such a book. The usual word salad wouldn't have enough calories.

Would this work on my Asda, four for a £1 ,chocolate ones?

Its been a very busy few days at the start of 2025 from a pro-active media release effort from H&M .... looks like they are tripping all over themselves and getting in their own way with it all ... have all of these communications / initiatives been ridiculed - doesnt seem to be any core strategy alongside poor execution.

Here you go - elevated donuts!

Definitely, as was the focaccia.

But when you look at those "donuts" it's an odd texture (maybe just the compression of the photo), it looks almost sponge like. So I'm wondering if they're mini sponges actually? If so the colour is appropriate.

No. You need some fragrant pink petals from a fine, newly opened Gertrude Jekyll rose and a snippet of baby's breath. And this must be authentic and seasonal. No donuts for you until the Summer.

I think they may be baked doughnuts? Which is pretty much just a cake batter
baked in a ring pan, so more or less a mini sponge as you suggest.

"The game's afoot:

"Dear Kate, you and I cannot be confined within the weak list of a country's fashion: we are the makers of donuts, Kate."

"That which we call a donut
By any other word would smell as sweet"

"O happy donut,
This is thy calories: there fat content, and let me diet.

@BemusedAmerican
"saw in one photo online but they can't go back to see if their pet survived."

One thing I find intriguing is how people
do seem to be able to go back to check on their property. There are loads of videos on line of people finding things in the ruins of their houses. I would have thought it would still be too hot/too unsafe. Do you know anything about it? Assuming that you get more information than we do....

All I've read is that people are being stopped from going into areas where tit is dangerous to go. But the fires are spanning tens of thousands of acres so I'm sure people can illicitly break through since police are stretched thin. If I had to leave my pet behind, I would do anything to get back. Pasadena Humane posted something on their site about how they were going back to look for animals left behind. The Guardian did an article about people rescuing livestock from the fire zone.

Aren't people allowed to go back to their own properties to protect them against looters? I don't think it was compulsory to evacuate, so not sure how it can be legal to prevent people returning to their own private property in the absence of a law giving authority to stop them.

Onlyonekenobe · 15/01/2025 13:43

Now I want a burger AND a donut.

Which, as it so happens, perfectly encapsulates the absolute hypocrisy of this situation: skinny teeny tiny, health-and-wellbeing obsessed, but apparently eating burgers, milkshakes and donuts (elevated ones). That whole world is hypocritical BS, Meghan and Harry fit right in.

Thedom · 15/01/2025 13:44

I read they are using cadaver dogs, so I guess until that process is concluded they cannot allow people back. Its likely they go from one area to another and open it up as they conclude their search.

BemusedAmerican · 15/01/2025 13:44

If it's an active fire zone, then they will keep them out. You can't have fire fighters battling a blaze while 6 feet away someone is climbing through the rubble of their house. The Guardian is posting the size of the fires and the percentage of containment of each fire. On Tuesday the Palisades fire alone covered over 23,000 acres and had 17 percent containment. The winds are incredibly strong and the fires can shift and break out due to the wind.

PrincessMarkleOfCarparkle · 15/01/2025 14:28

Some people have gone back, there's footage from NBC on YouTube, these areas are probably no longer in danger. I've also seen this video about a group of people who have stayed and protected their homes successfully, which is absolutely astounding.

The air is also really toxic. More people have died from the long- term effects of the Twin Towers destruction than in the initial attack. The toxic ash caused a huge amount of health issues. The entire city of LA is exposed to this toxic ash.

Harry's given up his kingdom to be a donut distributor. There's a Shakespearean tragedy or comedy in all this, only time will tell.
