Sussexes statement about Californian wildfires

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 09/01/2025 19:47

Meghan and Harry have released a statement in regards to the California wildfire via their Sussex.com website.

It reads:

”In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life.
A state of emergency has been issued.
If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas:
Support
Organizations such as José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner of The Archewell Foundation, are serving meals to both first responders and victims of the fire.
CAL FIRE and LA Fire Department Foundation and others are working closely to support firefighters who risk their lives, bravely showing up in these high-risk environments to help save homes, families, and communities in need.
Animal Wellness Foundation is continuing to house and care for animals evacuated by the fires while Compton Cowboys is providing emergency transportation services for horses.
Airbnb and 211LA have partnered to provide free, temporary housing for those who have been displaced.

Baby2baby is providing essential supplies including diapers, clothing, hygiene products, and emergency kits to families in need.
All Power Books and many others are staying open for emergency use, offering supplies and water for pickup while working tirelessly to distribute essentials to those affected.

Open your home
If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.
Give back
Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need.”

Helping animals helps us all.

Non-profit organization leading in animal rescue, animal protection and awareness; and low-cost medical care. Adopt, volunteer and foster opportunities available!

So as it turns out then JG actually helped in two communities, her own and another one. Sounds like she gave up a lot of her time.
As we know Harry and Meghan head off on a 100+ mile trip to Pasadena with their security team (and possibly a cameraman) where they were given a guided tour of the area by the Mayor (who hasn't done himself any favours), had a group photo and gave out some food and by all accounts didn't stay for that long. I can see why they have been given the label 'Disaster Tourist'. They may have meant well but the optics are shocking and they are being rightly called out on it, and this time I'd bet most of the negative comments are from the US.

You forgot to mention the hugs .

NotaRealHousewife · 15/01/2025 09:49

@Spectre8 This is a thread about Meghan and Harry so people are going to discuss them

You are so keen to defend her but are quite happy to throw Justine Bateman under the bus

JanuaryCrow · 15/01/2025 09:49

Spectre8 · 15/01/2025 09:41

Because i don't criticise people who volunteer their time or money to help. So why would i start a thread? I'm not criticisng Jennifer either I'm pointing out on here people are criticisng them for going to a community they don't live in to help but if someone else does the same they aren't criticised. So really it's not criticism it's just wanting to be horrible about two people just because you don't like them but don't want to admit you like to bitch about them, just own it.

Edited

I don't think anyone's denying that Harry and Meghan are unpopular, Spectre8.
Many posters have taken considerable time to explain quite patiently why they believe that is so, notably in the US, and why the context is very specific to them.

@I'm sorry, what point remains?

That Catherine went to a launch of a major charitable donation launch (that she had spearheaded) and was smartly dressed"

But then put on an apron and gloves and pretended to shift boxes for a photo op.

My point is that they ALL do it.

Your point is missing the actual point though which is that the photo ops that the Royals take part in is to highlight other’s work. Not to draw attention to themselves

It seems not many people 'like them' then, people criticise how they operate. Their netflix trailer has around 20,0000 likes and 170,000 dislikes, the comment section (6,000 comments) are overwhelming negative. That's something.

It's not just this tiny corner of MN who 'don't like them' aka point out the inconsistencies in their PR efforts or their efforts at laundering their reputations.

Yes, it's all over the US now - mainstream news discussions, podcasts with huge audiences, social media, You Tube videos (again with huge audiences).

I don't agree with all the analyses, but the point is that their popularity ratings are plummeting rapidly owing to their actions both in the US and the UK. Possibly elsewhere too.

The disapproval of H&M's behaviour is most certainly not a niche activity on MN. We are all merely observers of a cultural phenomenon in motion, and it's fascinating to see it unfolding in live-time.

@mainecooncatonahottinroof or maybe she will go fuck it and make money ditching all the dirt on the Royal family? If you are going to get shit whatever you do, why not lean into it? And she could make some serious money doing that.

I sometimes wonder if the reason she hasn't already done so is connected to the report on bullying conducted but never published ?

As an aside, I found In-n-Out to be overrated as a burger joint. Their whole schtik is that they offer four options - burger, with cheese, double burger, double with cheese.

But it's entirely unremarkable and did not rank on my international burger chart.

Absolutely agree with you, it was one of our kids go to's when we were in California, and even they agreed it was over rated. We made one trip and never went back.

Yes, as someone said upthread, nobody needs these fires pointing out to them. There's probably a relief centre within 30m of their home where they can sit there diligently sorting clothes donations.

Going to the neighbourhood and doing a tour was highly unnecessary. Paris Hilton said that seeing her home burned to the ground on TV was upsetting - potentially there's people out there seeing what's left of their homes for the first time in someone else's photo op.

(And I wasn't aware at all of baby banks before Catherine's visit, and I looked up local ones and donated substantially since.)

Truthfully if I was Meghan I would think fuck it. No more volunteering or trying to help others.

Do you mean helping herself whilst using others as props? She could do all sorts of stuff without the cameras recording her an d the and PR people in tow.

I think she should give that a go.
See if anyone notices.

I'm still wondering from where and why LA Mayor Karen Bass (also unpopular) popped in for the line-up group photo.

Was she just co-incidentally hanging out at that exact location at the exact time the photo was taken?

Of all the tangents on this wild, wild thread, this is my favourite. Please start a burger thread so we can deep dive into your chart, I have opinions!

The most disappointed I’ve ever been was an American friend RAVING about Shake Shack’s concretes and it turned out to be… ice-cream. She’d built it up so much! I was expecting a transcendent experience!

To stay on track, I actually saw concrete (aha) proof of tangible help Archewell has offered, an Instagram post from Altadena Girls Fire Recovery Fund (started by a local teen) shouting out a special thank you to Archewell Foundation their support. A drop in the ocean of bad publicity, so much so I was kind of surprised to see that they had actually done something. No dollar figures have yet emerged from either Archewell or the couple personally, which looks terrible when other boldface names donating (even if it’s via a foundation, like Beyoncé, Jamie Lee Curtis and Eva Longoria) are naming the price tag.

I'm so sorry for the people who lost their homes and communities but my heart is also breaking for all the poor animals affected by this, both pets and wildlife. There are a lot of charities in California doing great things for animals.

Absolutely.

They had the support of a large proportion of the UK for wanting to leave the ‘goldfish bowl’ and strike out on their own and in a more private way. They then publicly dumped on Harry’s family on a chat show and we got a good idea of how they were going to ‘strike out’ on their own and so it continued for the next 2 years. A lot is us here in the U.K. re-evaluated our opinion of them from that point.

After this weekend I think a large proportion of the US are now currently undertaking their own re-evaluation of the couple.

They certainly don’t want or need a US branch of the RF.

This is all on them and their behaviour. No one else they can point the finger blame at.

Having a baby has ruined this facet of my old life, but here are some memorable highlights:

No 1: Red Fox Tavern, Maramarua, NZ. A random burger joint in an international Lions clubhouse had NO BUSINESS being this sublime.

Honourable mentions:
Cow Burger, Copenhagen
The Millenial Burger, Bucharest
Alef Burger Bar, Faro
Bunsen, Dublin
Forman and Field - you can order their burgers to cook and home and they're bloody gorgeous.

If you believe that the photo ops are all completely altruistic then I have a beautiful bridge her I can sell you. Going cheap.....

PrincessMarkleOfCarparkle · 15/01/2025 10:59

Also, my husband's favorite is In-N-Out. There's one at the halfway point between L.A. and our neck of the woods. It's really fun to go through the drive-thru and surprise them. They know our order.'

Invictus, Germany, Meghan turns up late. A few days beforehand is "papped" (what a coincidence there are Backgrid photographers present at a random burger drive thru) buying milkshakes at an In-N-Out. On her own. Makes a speech at Invictus saying sorry to be "late to the party" because she was buying milkshakes for her kids. So she did a 2 hour round trip in a big gas-guzzling vehicle to buy milkshakes to take home and get her photo taken. These people call themselves environmentalists and complain about climate change, then clamber over the ashes of their hypocrisy.

Everyone at that baby bank event was dressed smartly, because it was the launch of the initiative, an event to bring publicity to the cause and show what they do, not a regular day shift. Of course Catherine (and anyone else present) is going to pose for pictures showing what they do and who they help. She's wearing one of their aprons because it has the logo of the baby banks on it, and so that's giving them free publicity when her photo is taken. What's more, bringing these baby banks together and personally persuading big brands to donate to them is actually one of Catherine's own early years initiatives, so it's her own work in partnership with the people on the ground she's promoting, not just bandwagoning for a photo op. The couple who are there talking about the help they're received are also dressed very smartly. Should they be dressed in rags to look poor for the hard of thinking?
