Sussexes statement about Californian wildfires

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 09/01/2025 19:47

Meghan and Harry have released a statement in regards to the California wildfire via their Sussex.com website.

It reads:

”In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life.
A state of emergency has been issued.
If you feel compelled to help, here are some resources and ideas:
Support
Organizations such as José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner of The Archewell Foundation, are serving meals to both first responders and victims of the fire.
CAL FIRE and LA Fire Department Foundation and others are working closely to support firefighters who risk their lives, bravely showing up in these high-risk environments to help save homes, families, and communities in need.
Animal Wellness Foundation is continuing to house and care for animals evacuated by the fires while Compton Cowboys is providing emergency transportation services for horses.
Airbnb and 211LA have partnered to provide free, temporary housing for those who have been displaced.

Baby2baby is providing essential supplies including diapers, clothing, hygiene products, and emergency kits to families in need.
All Power Books and many others are staying open for emergency use, offering supplies and water for pickup while working tirelessly to distribute essentials to those affected.

Open your home
If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.
Give back
Some families and people have been left with nothing. Please consider donating clothing, children’s toys & clothing, and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need.”

Helping animals helps us all.

Non-profit organization leading in animal rescue, animal protection and awareness; and low-cost medical care. Adopt, volunteer and foster opportunities available!

Can you surprise staff at a drive thru if they know your order? Surely the latter suggests regular attendance!

BunnyLake · 15/01/2025 06:55

So does anyone know who the woman is who’s photographed getting a hug from Meghan? There are photos of them leaving together and people on SM are questioning who she is. I think knowing who this person is would indicate their sincerity. If she is part of H&M’s inner circle in any way then that is going to look pretty bad.

JanuaryCrow · 15/01/2025 07:01

Yep, I agree about the 'past behaviour' issue being a major thorn in their sides.

I was under the impression that not that many Americans were really aware of who H&M were, but now many millions more people will be because their Pasadena, LA visit is all over US news channels, You Tube and other SM, along with all the criticisms. Quite the introduction to the celebrity couple.

Justine Bateman's criticism took off precisely because so many people were feeling the same way. As long as H&M keep arguing back the story and the criticism will remain current, and more and more people will be curious about the other things they've done and been criticised for. I had my eyes opened on here, on MN, about all this and many other things.

I think they need to step back to Montecito, focus on their own neighbourhood and lie low, especially as the next winds and fires descend upon LA and environs.

As I posted above on the thread, Meghan has herself stressed that she is a 'commuter' to Los Angeles and not a resident.

These are her own words in to Variety magazine, published in October 2022:

'It's funny. People sometimes think we live in Los Angeles, but we're a good two hours outside of it. We're commuters. We drove down recently for a day of back-to-back meetings, equipped with chocolate chip cookies the size of my toddler's head. Also, my husband's favorite is In-N-Out. There's one at the halfway point between L.A. and our neck of the woods. It's really fun to go through the drive-thru and surprise them. They know our order.'

Why was Harry there? How much have they donated?

Zippedydodah · 15/01/2025 07:17

@BunnyLake it’s one of her own staff apparently.

@Serenster "She didn’t, but I think it was these shoes, PrettyFlyforaMaiTai. Worn to a charity donation launch that Kate announced at a charity called baby basics at Sheffield. This si the picture that was being referred to, I think."

Thank you-yes that was the picture I meant. It was on a composite picture which included the Windsor Food Bank ones-and I wrongly conflated them. My point remains!

I'm sorry, what point remains?

That Catherine went to a launch of a major charitable donation launch (that she had spearheaded) and was smartly dressed? It wasn't her working at or helping out at the food bank/baby bank, it was purely a PR event to attract donors. She was instrumental organising it.

So you think she should've rocked up in jeans and a tee?

I can’t open the link but if that’s true then it tells people all they need to know about the sincerity of this visit.

@mainecooncatonahottinroof or maybe she will go fuck it and make money ditching all the dirt on the Royal family? If you are going to get shit whatever you do, why not lean into it? And she could make some serious money doing that.

I absolutely cannot wait for more scandals on a par with borrowed lipgloss.

She was wearing a mask around her neck similar to the ones that H&M were given or brought along, and a lanyard. She would appear to be either one of H&M's staff or on Mayor Gordo's staff.

Also, where did LA Mayor Karen Bass miraculously rock up from for the 'making memories' group photo with H&M, Jennifer Newsom et al? That was convenient.

If I were Meghan, I'd seek out some professional advice to overhaul my imagine if I wanted to remain in the public eye, which I assume she does!

I don’t think she would listen .
Is she still with WME?

i think the main point, and the one most people are disgusted by, is they showed up with an entourage consisting of assistants, multiple bodyguards and a camera crew, they clamoured over burnt out vehicles, they walked over the ashes of someones home and life, they had a guided tour set up for them, very few believe they are genuine, they have a reputation for performative grandstanding and photo opportunities.

Somewhat siimilar to the photo shoot they did at the cemetery for Fallen Soldiers on Remembrance day a few years ago, distasteful and self serving..

Absolutely this.
I didn’t see an entourage with Jenifer Garner? Or her getting a tour of the devastation.
I have only seen photos of her genuinely getting stuck in and helping. In a neighbourhood where she is known as a person as well as a celebrity and is connected to.

Thats where she lives now but you csnt deny she was born and raised in LA for good part of 20-25yrs of her life so as per previous poster trying to make out its okay for Jennifer cos she has lived there for 25yrs well do has meghan 😊

Vespanest · 15/01/2025 08:44

My theory and it's just that is they were invited/or request accepted by the mayor. I have not seen any footage of the wearing the gloves that seem required by the volunteers of the world central kitchen or at anytime looked like they'd done a shift. Which left the hugging, the standing around, the walkabout and the group photo. Jennifer was clearly working at the kitchen, although I find it strange that people who are adamant that no criticism should be sent H and M way are happy to throw another woman into the mix and argue the toss. The only criticism I've seen online about Jennifer stems from a certain group.

ThePoshUns · 15/01/2025 08:50

The big difference being M&H took an entourage and a film crew with them, Jennifer didn't.

Regardless of whether anyone is pro or anti Meghan and Harry visiting, using Jennifer Garner as a body shield for them is uncalled for. Their visit should stand or fall on its own merits.

Spectre8 · 15/01/2025 03:55

I didn't categorically state she wasn't helping where she lived. The point was always back to she helped in a community that wasn't hers so why the double standards. Noone criticisng her for it and you know what as per usual when the double standards are pointed out thebusual lets deflect, tell the poster no more discussion etc.

So let's here it feom you then if you think it's not right for H&M to go to a community that they don't live in and help, then do you also agree it's not right for Jennifer to go to a community she doesn't live in and help?

Let's hear it from all of you who have yes or no is Jennifer also wrong to do that?

Edited

May I suggest you go back and have a look at your post on the now filled up thread (13/01/25 @ 21.42, for ease of reference).

Yes, that's the bit that stuck out for me.
I'm sure I've read that it's an Oscar night tradition for celebrities (Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Russell Crowe have all been mentioned) to get an In-N-Out burger afterwards.
Admittedly, the one Meghan mentioned isn't the Hollywood one, but I suspect they still see enough real celebrities not to get overexcited about H&M.
It would certainly make sense to pander to their egos by appearing to be, though.

IAmATorturedPoet · 15/01/2025 09:05

So as it turns out then JG actually helped in two communities, her own and another one. Sounds like she gave up a lot of her time.
As we know Harry and Meghan head off on a 100+ mile trip to Pasadena with their security team (and possibly a cameraman) where they were given a guided tour of the area by the Mayor (who hasn't done himself any favours), had a group photo and gave out some food and by all accounts didn't stay for that long. I can see why they have been given the label 'Disaster Tourist'. They may have meant well but the optics are shocking and they are being rightly called out on it, and this time I'd bet most of the negative comments are from the US.

Thedom · 15/01/2025 09:22

The person who interviewed Jennifer Garner and Jose Andres explained that she saw them on the road and pulled them over to ask for an interview. They were out doing work that was not being promoted when the interviewer spotted them. It appeared to be a totally impromptu interview.

CurlewKate · 15/01/2025 09:28

@I'm sorry, what point remains?

That Catherine went to a launch of a major charitable donation launch (that she had spearheaded) and was smartly dressed"

But then put on an apron and gloves and pretended to shift boxes for a photo op.

My point is that they ALL do it.

@Spectre8 Why don't you start a thread about Jennifer garner?

Because i don't criticise people who volunteer their time or money to help. So why would i start a thread? I'm not criticisng Jennifer either I'm pointing out on here people are criticisng them for going to a community they don't live in to help but if someone else does the same they aren't criticised. So really it's not criticism it's just wanting to be horrible about two people just because you don't like them but don't want to admit you like to bitch about them, just own it.
